CAMM (SEA CEPTOR) WEAPON BRIEFING - NO. 6

The CAMM (Common Anti-Air Modular Missile) series is a family of surface-to-air missiles developed by MBDA UK for the United Kingdom. CAMM shares some common features and components with the ASRAAM air-to-air missile, but with updated electronics and an active radar homing seeker. The Common Anti-Air Modular Missile is replacing the Sea Wolf missile on Type 23 frigates of the Royal Navy since 2018,will replace the Rapier missile in British Army service and is contributing to the updating of MBDA's ASRAAM in service with the Royal Air Force.

Oh, the Italians have finally finished developing the extended range version then? I think it's worth noting that the range (of any missile) is very much dependent on the altitude, and publicly available figures, are usually very conservative (Janes, usually a fairly reliable source, said it reached 60km in trials, but expect this to be high altitude, and slowing down towards the end).

ik about the stated range on OS is 70% of the time incorrect, and ik some missiles have an altitude, I didn't bother putting it in due to reasons i will not discuss. janes is great, but that info would be excellent info for more of a tactical threat brief.

Canada's opted for both the ESSM and Sea Sceptor missile systems with the latter being used as the CIWS.

Australian navy choosen the more expensive option ESSM 2 evolved sea sparrow missiles not sea captors for air defence on its ships.

It's my understanding that the CAMM can be quad packed into certain VLS tubes. Is this also true for the extended range version?

Quote: “The naval version of the Sylver A50 Launcher will be used by CAMMER quadruple version augmenting exponentially the number of missiles on board for each pitcher.”

As far as I know, the ER is still in the testing phase. The standard CAMM has not long undergone certification for "quad-packing" in some launchers and that variant has been around for years, so I wouldn't expect the ER to be qualified soon. Physically speaking, there should be no problem fitting the missiles. The ER is still only 190mm in diameter compared to the ESSM's 254mm, and 4 of those fit comfortably in a Mk 41 VLS cell. The Mk 41 launcher seems to be 71x71cm, and the Sylver 60x56cm, so even in the smaller of the 2 launchers, there is still 180mm space for the canisters which should be enough.

CAMM/CAMM-ER are missiles with soft start so I don't think that mk41 is capable to eject this type of missile. Propably mk41 would require changes in design.

aussies type 26 doesn't use camm - ESSM and SM2

@@TheShipYard2 the behind funnel fitting has been deleted on the hunter (canada are having for point defence (knocked of RAM) yes they can be fitted quad packed in the MK41 silo's (32 celss) but as RAN already use ESSM and SM2 and have stated that as armament - personally I think should have the mid ship camm in addition, and fit it to the OPV

@@paultanton4307 yep as I said canada are still having camm -- your correct are also having SM2 and ESSM (canadas camm shown as the behind funnel mount) I wish RAN put that on the aussie ships too.
