Worked solution for Question 2, Chapter 5 (available as free download at www.particles....) in Fundamentals of Particle Technology. The Camp-Hazen sedimentation basin model uses a very important modelling concept in Particle Technology, that of the 'critical particle trajectory'. We consider a particle size, and predict the behaviour of the particles in the process at that size. The approach is used for designing equipment, such as a settling basin, and for understanding a process. It can also be used a starting point to deduce the efficiency of a process for the collection of particles of different sizes. Simple settling basins, as modelled here, are commonly found in the waste-water industry. Periodic removal of the deposited particles is needed, often achieved by a scraper travelling slowly at the bottom of the vessel, to push the sludge into a collection trough at one end of the device.
