I remember when Wiz kid was here in Nairobi with Banky W shooting Shuga 2 and looking for exposure Camp mulla were already playing on channel O and touring the continent. I wish they stuck around . A comeback ain't as easy as they thought. I just wish Taio the best 🙏🏾
@Judi590
@Judi590 5 жыл бұрын
Exactly, they should have kept going coz they had something unique but now the market is saturated with tz and naija music. So they will have to work super hard to get back
@nellymaina4494
@nellymaina4494 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah even in its East Africa they don't stand a chance with all this bongo craze that filled the void they and other artists left
@Judi590
@Judi590 5 жыл бұрын
So true, the market is too saturated by outside artists. I think whoever advised them to hold off on their music did them a great disservice coz by now they could have reached the heights of sauti sol
@nellymaina4494
@nellymaina4494 5 жыл бұрын
@@Judi590 sis continental wise they were bigger than sauti sol because of the demographic of their fans and urban culture. If you look closely sauti sol may be big in Kenya but outside they only command a mature audience who listen to "grown" stuff
@Judi590
@Judi590 5 жыл бұрын
@@nellymaina4494 so true, these guys did have a niche market. I remember when i first heard "this party don't stop" i honestly thought it was a south African group coz it just sounded so urban.nwy i think they've given up on a comeback coz its been months since they announced they were getting back together

This was very beautiful and wholesome. I remember listening to camp Mulla as a teenager, and somehow being very inspired. I am proud of Taio, you could tell that he was speaking with so much awareness. Sometimes we give love to the wrong person, and we sit there and wonder, "how could I have given love to that person? They don't even deserve it," or "what a waste of time." But the thing is, you shouldn't think about it that way. You should think of the fact that you were able to give love because if you are able to give it, that means you have it inside of you. It means that that is what makes you. And it's the same thing with everything else. It's the same thing with kindness, with honesty, with your ability to care about people. That shows who you are. Don't focus on the way that people abuse that. Don't focus on the way that people react to that. Focus on the fact that you have it within you, and that it makes you who you are. It makes you a beautiful person, a beautiful human being

People ask what happened to camp mulla, here is my analysis. The group jumped into to the kenyan scene when the market had local guys doing music in swahili and sheng and bongO was catchin up, we had just come from a big phase of western hiphop hungover which was widely pushed by aki na channel O, and it was the same phase where Kenyan music went visual, audio tracks were done and music video was really dope. So, the Kenyan music consumer was at that phase of i want something local, it has to be visual and it has to be somthing i know (thus the western hiphop hangover phase) this guys chekd all the boxes and boom. Now even though they were a big hit, it was for a given crowd. Guys how could consume muisc in English,follow it and understand it.( that was the market) but, the bigger market was swahili ,sheng,bongo and newly ooga ooh kind of muisc. camp mullah was a hit yes, to a select small english market competing with sheng and etc. On the other hand what made this guys very good was also their greatest weakness, this was a "group of school" kinda group. Each person had very high potential and i assume family money backup to do anything in life, not like aki na local group who had only one thing going and a stick together or die kinda mentality, this guys were free, young with that influence and pride of you can leave your life separately and still be successful. It was not a do or die, scorched earth take over and rule kind of mentality, drive and hunger. However, if they had that drive, Africa could have been theirs for the taking.

This is true especially on the part where their "music was for a given crowd" cause I remember watching this one vid of them performing on "Niko na Safaricom concert" and most of the crowd was silent as opposed to when other Kenyan artistes performed. Throughout the video I was telling myself these guys donno what they are missing cause if I was there, I would have sang every song word for word. I'm sure if they had the same support Kenyans gave Sauti Sol, most likely we would have our own genre just like Nigeria and TZ do. We also have to give THE BEAT its flowers cause they did a wonderful job showing Camp Mulla and other artistes to the Kenyan market......they had this " BEAT OF THE WEEK" part where they would play new music the whole week and Camp Mulla's 'Party don't stop' was among the songs played and as a fan of THE BEAT, that's how I got to know them. Still glad they ruled the 2011 to 2013 era.....their music till date is at par or even above Kenyan music now.

Now even Diamond recorgnises that singing in English gives you leeway Internationally. Camp Mulla gave us the hint to where African Music was heading, but our industry didn't want that change. Now we're stuck. Otile is telling guys English is powerful, but folks are ignoring that. Once you look at this as trade you'll understand why it's important to cut international records. The world is bigger than Kenya
