What the local people “don’t want” is the wrong sort of tree. Specifically, non-native mono crops (that is, row after row of conifers) which do absolutely nothing to support the local eco-systems (birds, bees, etc) and which indeed are damaging to suchlike. All that such mono-crops do is make money for the land-owner when they are cut down and sold off. Terrible. Very best wishes to the concerned people in that area.
@craigharkins46692 жыл бұрын
I agree with the local as well and wish them we'll. I'm sick and tired of seeing plantation forests everywhere. I'm up in Scotland and so many of the grougs of trees I see are non-native trees planted tightly together so there's not even enough space to enter with out being smacked by branches. No light gets in and nothing grows on the forest floor. It's terrible for biodiversity.
@lesreid27042 жыл бұрын
Very well said. The land will eventually become a desert if sitka spruce plantations are created. The vitally important upland mosses and habitat will be destroyed and this will only increase land erosion and cause flooding at lower levels. Monoculture is the cause of much of the flooding in the UK in the last thirty years.

2012-2024 and many larch forests have been felled in S Wales. Some bright spark back after the war planted the one species for telegraph poles and such apparently but too close together. Now they're planting varieties to compliment the land. Total carnage seeing ancient routes and trees destroyed to get at the larch. Not exactly tidy about it either. However, speaking to one very old lady she did say 'about bloody time the trees are taking over!' She was used to more open land and our traditional British trees growing up. My own observation, not much else grew around these larch trees. My query has alway been though what about the rest of the tree, we all know a tree is just as much and just as much alive below ground as it is above. Does disease stop at the root system/ is the ground treated? Chemical worry if so. My point is.. if greed is involved will this happen again! My guess it will.

I understand the point but as horrible as it sounds, everybody has to die from something. I'm in no way wishing illness on anyone, ofc I'm not but we locked down last winter (absolutely the right thing to do), we now have the vaccines and everybody who wants them now has theirs and we've just got to get on with it. There's no point cowering, covid will eventually just evolve itself into a more contagious flu-like virus. The balance is difficult and I don't mind some light restrictions this winter (masks are a big yes) but I think imposing more restrictions to control a virus producing less than 50 deaths per day doesn't seem particularly necessary imho
