I used the surplus sleeping mat modification for my German Alpine rucksack. It works great and saved me a lot of money having the folding mat sent from Europe. I learn something every time I watch your channel.

Lay stuff like that over the gap between the tailgate and bed to cut material. A ready made straight edge, and no danger of dulling the blade .

Blackie this video is why I learn something new on almost every one of your vid. I have used D rings on back packs since the Boy Scouts (1968) and never thought of looping the straps.I now use a Duluth pack with the same D ring style (I hate nylon packs) Another great idea. Thanks!!!!

that strap trick was passed on to me by a old mentor of mine who learned it in combat as a marine..being able to get out of a strap in a hurry was important

@@blackoracle69 I think it is ingenious. Getting out has always always concerned me so I have a problem with letting the straps loose but as you know it can be painful with a heavy load. Thanks Blackie!!

For unpadded straps...I went to the dollar store and got acouple of those vehicle seat belt strap pads..they velcro close on and off and make a world of difference on a long hike.

Thanks for the ideas, I had been using a foam garden kneeling pad. I like the idea of two pads better. Plus it only takes up a little more space than my pad.

I like this idea and am wondering where I can get one of these pads to do this with I have a old canvas ww11 back pack from before they came out with the Alice pack it has a very heavy uncomfortable tube steel frame and want to do something like this with it. Can you help? Also I hear shooting in the back ground are people down there getting ready for hunting season or is it pest control I use a muzzle loader myself for hunting along with a bow.

@slickydicky 4 жыл бұрын
@@alverntrujillo9945 I like it for the most part. I just wish the flap had a buckle or something on it. It has the tendency to flop over to the side when going through brush or something like that, which is annoying more than anything.
@alverntrujillo9945
@alverntrujillo9945 4 жыл бұрын
@@slickydicky yea I see how that would get annoying and I was thinking of modifying that issue when I was going to order mine but I just happen to get back on the site to see what other canvas gear he offered and it looks like he added loops to the end of the flaps and to the side of pack to maybe add some Paracord and toggles to hold it shut
@slickydicky
@slickydicky 4 жыл бұрын
Wolfe yeah it wouldn't take much to fix it. I though of sewing a antler onto the front of the bucket of the pack, then sew a length of paracord onto the flap the site around it like a toggle. I just need to get motivated to do it lol

I like what you did with this bag but I have a slightly different problem I have a canvases Alice pack style about the size of the medium size with no frame but the straps are permently attached, but with no padding in the straps. Also no inner pockets or inner lid pocket. I am trying to figure out what I can use for a water proof pack liner that would work same with the three outer pockets like the Alice pack. How ever the pocket lids do not snap but just buckle and strap and the shoulder straps have the same kind of buckles as on a Alice pack lid I added quick release buckles for the lid but don't know if the 1 inch ones will hold for the bottom of the shoulder straps. But like I said what else can I use for a water proof pack liner that will work and hold up well? I h QA 've heard of using trash bags but not on the heaveynes of the ply. What do you recomend I use?

Hi Blackie, I have a question for you, I'm a recent subscriber to your channel and enjoy your helpful videos. I see that you (like myself) like military surplus gear and clothing. Was wondering if you ever tried the ALICE pack? I searched your video library and seen nothing on it. I was surprised. It looks like you bring minimal gear with you. I think the medium Alice pack would be a perfect pack for Bushcraft. Would you consider ever doing a video on that? or do you just hate them for some reason? I have the large and medium Alice packs. I like the medium best since it doesn't hang a mile off your back.
