Why did he unhook? He kept sliding back and trying to go up the hill and after several attempts, the trailer started goin into the ditch so now he could not back up, and could not back around the corner, and could not make it up the hill. He hoped to disconnect and reconnect on a better angle. Yes he used his pull away brake and wheel chocks. It overrode both. Secondly on how much it cost? Nothing we did not charge him a penny and didn’t accept a tip Why?? Because our sponsors just like on x And Viewers like you Cover all the costs needed so we are able to help guys like this without charging them in a crappy situation So if you don’t like a mini commercial just skip it It’s one way we able to do it for FREE THANK YOU FOR WATCHING

One hell of a job. Good going. I had an issue with my first 5th wheel trailer that I tried to tow up a steep dirt road. I had a F350 2-wheel drive, and lost traction in the middle of a second hill. Being new I was going to try to back down a little way, but the trailer was not going the way I wanted. I was stuck and straight up scared. My wife was following me in my little ranger truck, so I had her get the dogs into the little truck. I couldn't get out because I had to keep my foot on the brake. Putting it in park, and it was still trying to roll back, so the brake helped hold it in place. Did I mention the couple hundred feet drop off, and being scared? I had her go get help, and she went to the farmers house at the bottom of the road. Mr. Billingsley came to my rescue. He got in front of me with his old green ex forest service Dodge pickup and hooked up a rope. Big rope. His truck helped me up that hill, and boy I was relieved. After we disconnected, he wanted to make sure I could make it up the last hill which was a few miles away, which that one was no problem. He said most people he has had to help usually were intoxicated and was glad I wasn't. (me too, but I dont drink and drive). We didnt have a lot of cash, but I did give him 80.00 dollars which he refused, but I told him to take his wife out on us. That was over 20 years ago, and we still go by his farm all the time. Most I have pulled up that hill since was an in-bed camper, and with our F450 4-wheel drive I can pull a car trailer with a jeep loaded on it, but never again will I pull our new 5th wheel up that hill. Just yesterday I joked to the wife that I was going to take our little toy hauler down the hill, she just no you are not. Going that was saves over 40 miles to get to our lot, but I have learned my lesson that its noy always better to go on a short cut.

The WHY he unhooked his truck is mind-boggling but irrelevant at this time. What an absolute fantastic video, the use of ingenuity, teamwork and just overall ton of a "we can" mentality is awesome. Great work gentleman, I'm glad it all worked out. From an almost full-time RV'er I will offer this, in nearly 99.9% of the time DISCONNECTING your trailer from your tow vehicle is not a good idea. This holds true to ALL 5ers, Goosenecks and bumper pulls. Best piece of advice, from experience; stop, re-evaluate the totality of the situation and seek assistance better sooner than later. Great video and I am a new sub.

scary how big and heavy these campers are compared to the tow vehicle. and even scarier how weak that hitch is. i think tow limits have been pushed too far on trucks. seems campers this big need a small semi tractor.

It’s not the pulling…it’s the stopping. I can pull anything with a very light vehicle if it has enough torque and the correct gear ratio. The problems is stopping a 10,000 lb trailer with a truck that weighs 7,000 lbs. Even though the trailer has brakes, they are typically drum brakes that can assist the tow vehicle in stopping. The kinetic energy of the trailer at speed means it does not want to stop unless other forces exert a greater effort to overcome this energy. So the truck has to do most of the stopping on the trailer. This is what your towing factor is minister to. This doesn’t account for the 3,000 lbs of crap that was then thrown into the trailer. So most of these guys get a trailer that is at the upper limits of what they can stop. It’s not what they can pull. Don’t get that confused. Then with the added weight they are well past what they can safely stop. Then they get on the freeway and drive 75 miles an hour.

Really well done guys and well thought out. For those reading if you ever unhook a trailer on a hill WHEEL CHALK THE CRAP OUT OF IT! It's amazing how easily a big heavy trailer can overcome 1 or 2 wheel chalks. Do every tire as high as you reasonably can. If you're really in a pickle send a ratchet strap or chain throigh the wheels of both axles to create a parking brake of sorts. Yes it will suck to get off if tensionis on it but much better then loosing your load.

I had a similar experience pulling a small trailer up a gravel road with a front wheel drive Highlander. I had solar panels, batteries, and inverter for a campsite near Chattanooga. The load was perfectly distributed for the highway but without rear wheel drive there was no way to do the hill. Four wheel drive is essential on gravel hills but when pulling a trailer you should also have a second vehicle to be safe.

You make a reference to the proper way to loop a chain so you don't diminish the working load of that chain. This reference was made when you had to use a chain on the fifth wheel assembly. I would very much appreciate an explanation of that so I could be aware of it when I have a need to do something similar. Thank you very much for any help you may provide

WOW! Great job!! And thats the difference between 'recovery' guys and 'towing' guys. Recovery guys take the time to do it right. Towing guys just want to hook and run. What was he doing down in that hole with that camper anyway?

Is there any recovery that you can't figure out how to do? That was amazing! I was on the edge of my seat watching the trailer come out of the hillside--I can't imagine how you all felt as you were pulling it out. High pucker factor on this one. Very nice job Matt!

Don't forget about telehandlers! I've used one to pull out a loaded cement truck and a loaded triple axle dump truck. They're super low geared, 4x4 and dgaf!

I don’t think your home boy Casey could have done it better with his 5 rotators. 😂. The reason I say 5 it would take 3 just to get the first two out of the hole. Then a D9 hooked to that silly friction ring to drag them up the hill. 😂

Well done Matt 👏 I knew you would be the one to get it done. Had a feeling the wrecker wouldn't show up. You said something about the chain losing 20% of strength when hooked a certain way? Would love to hear more about that and proper use... Thanks for sharing another awesome video ❤

When you put a chain into a choker it is only good for 80% The same as any strap So most people will loop one end and then loop the other end making it look like a strap That is rated for 80% due to the choker on each end Run it into a circle ⭕️ Makes it into a basket and makes it rated for 200% Same as any strap Now there is a few other pieces of the formula The angles on which each contact point is needs d/d calculated and reduction and such but those would be a minimal difference
