Negative and positive length only need to match on multiple battery interconnections, At any other time it is just adding unnecessary resistance and voltage drop.. Great job on the setup.

Cheers, yeah we're really happy with our set up, it's been working out great so far! And yep, we wanted to make the batteries as balanced as possible and went with the diagonal method as we figured it was the simplest for what we needed. But you're right we didn't need to make the +ve and -ve from the board to the batteries the same length, only the ones between the batteries (www.smartgauge.co.uk/batt_con.html ). We found that on another resource at the time but as you say, it's not necessary and adds extra resistance. All the other wires in the van are of course just whatever the shortest and most convenient run was. Extending the -ve a bit did allow it to tuck neatly by the wall though so it worked out well in the end! 👍

@@SelfBuiltStories Hey ho again. I got a question: Will the MPPT shut down by itself when the battery is fully charged? How did you make sure it will not charge any longer when your battery is full? Thanks in advance!

@@roadboogie It never shuts down as such but it has a 3 stage charging profile. You configure all the settings in the app to match your batteries, and then when it's charging it goes through from bulk (fast charge at maximum current) to absorption (constant voltage with current slowly decreasing) and finally float (voltage and current reduced). So once the batteries are charged it just happily sits there in float mode keeping them topped up. You set it once and then pretty much just forget about it (unless you're like us and like to always check how much power you're getting 😛)

Thanks for that, I'm using all same electronics that you are using and everything is almost identical, same brand, same capacity, except the solar panels size which are a little bigger and the lithium battery that I'm using is a single 200 Ah lithium iron unlike your double 100 Ah. Other than that I'm following your tutorial to the letter from the start of my project as I think that it is the best tutorial on KZbin by far. Great job. I ended up just using a large portable power station to make it easier. I still had to do some wiring and hook up some components, but I wanted less labor. I also like being able to take it out of the vehicle when I have it parked at home. It costs more money though usually.

Great build. Also, 3:05 it's best to have the pocket screws coming in from the outside of the box so it has more wood to hold on to. It makes it much stronger, but a lot of the time it doesn't really matter.

Tip - put a thick rubber mat under the batteries as well as the secure tiedowns to help absorb shock from road corrugations etc. 2 of the main killers of batteries in RV's are heat and vibrations.

Re your negative battery lead. Your thinking is 100% correct for the 2 leads that join the batteries together, but for the run to everything else you do not need to match the length with the positive cable. There may also be benefit in powering the shunt directly from the batteries. That way the BMV will get the most accurate measurement of battery terminal voltage, unaffected by the current passing through the albeit heft 70mm cables. More advanced settings of the Victron gear using their Bluetooth networking allows the shunt's readings to be used instead of what the MPPT reads at its terminals for better charge control. Especially handy when you have multiple MPPTs as it will also synchronise them. BTW, great to see your review of my Afterburner 😀

Hi Ray, thanks for the comment! That's cool we might have to look into the bluetooth networking of the Victron kit in a bit more detail later. And yeah we love the Afterburner, it works great! Not quite sure how we'd use the heater day to day without it as being able to maintain the ambient temperature in the van is pretty key, especially at night when sleeping. One thing we were wondering actually, is it possible to save different settings for the afterburner for day time and night time? Our use case is we set the temperature target say 18C if we're in the van in the evening, but when going to bed like it a little cooler so lower it to around 15C, and also change the thresholds so it starts up less often (as it's fairly noisy on startup). So we tend to use the web interface to change the parameters before bed and then put them back in the morning. It would be pretty cool to just switch from saved preset day settings to night settings, is there anyway to do something like that? And thanks again for making such a great piece of kit!

That crimper did say you can also use it by bashing it with a hammer but in our experience, for the thick cables we were using, that was not happening at all 😛The vice worked nice to give really tight controlled crimps so very happy with it, was quite cheap too. We love what you are doing, thank you. A wee piece of advice . If you do this again please have both terminals of your batteries covered , rubber grommets until you actually fit. Drop a metal screwdriver, spanner , saw, or your fancy H spanner across both terminals at the same time and the result would be very unpleasant. and even if you had one, a fire extinguisher would not be of much use ...sorry to be the doom one here but years of submarines, planes and vans does teach you safety.

We'll probably get some covers or build a frame over them at some point. Not that we'd ever want to test it like that though 😛

Another cracking video. I had no idea the electrics could be so complex and while I won't be doing a van conversion anytime soon, if I were yours would be the one I'd use. Love the way you are both so involved and the way you both do everything. Keep it up and looking forward to the next video
