Today I'm in the studio painting a nostalgic memory from my Plein Air trips - THE OPEN CAMPFIRE!
I will be using palette knifes and oil paint, on clear primed and stretched Belgian linen.

I came back to reply on my earlier comment after this masterpiece has now been completed. Its...bit bitter sweet I might say as this video was from 3 years ago and may be forgotten already. Well let me bring it back to life with a very loud ovation and perhaps my own personal title for what I see here. . "The Light In The Darkness" I see a secret temple one might find if he reached down deep enough. Traversed all the lonely paths and overturned all the rocks. Down deep you must travel into the depth of the soul which is but a view into the infinite universe. And there is the burning fire. The bright light. Inside of you is where you will seek and find. Under the night sky where the ancient stars burn bright. I am swept away by this painting for the fire is me and I am like Richard here the man next to the campfire looking out at the night howling my approval and the excitement to be alive....

Luv your crazy loose style of painting. On this one I thought it was a painting of two people sitting in front of the fire… until I saw in fact it was two cups of beverage! There’s a whole school of Native American painters in the USA and I thought it was in that gentle… but in fact hot coffee is good too! Cheers!

Hi Richard, cool memories in that one. Yes there is a magic around a fire late at night. You captured it amazingly well. I've been studying tone or values and now understand re the darkest darks and lightest lights. Checked some of my paintings with black and white photography and can see I need more of the darkest darks to create my contrasts better. Thanks a million... Bill

Donna, I don't know why people make comparisons with Bob Ross like they're paying a compliment. I see it all the time with truly professional artists on here, even James Gurney who has over 40 years as an extraordinary Fine Artist. Good ol' Bob showed people how to "copy," so they could have a smiley little painting to go over their sofa. It made people happy, nothing wrong with that. But I do cringe at the comparisons with gifted artists like Jim and Richard who have decades of experience and produce exceptional work.

All fire comes from the one fire to include the fire of passion and desire. Richard obviously has the fire ignited within the soul and is able to translate not only the magical moment he had in the bush but the spirit of fire and adventure oh how it fulfills the soul. . My eye, my vision has shifted over the years do to my meditation and connection to great spirit and my own art work. I saw a story evolving at 21:21 of this video that I'd like to translate. We are all reflections of each other sometimes another pair of eyes can be satisfying. I see a platform like a diving board extending to the fire that hasn't been formed yet. Walking out from the ancient cave-or a portal perhaps, the silhouette of a human can be seen just emerging. Above and below I see eyes and profiles of bigger ancient beings-gods if you like that word. Not that Richard needs change a thing, but would love to see him allow the visionary artist within him a try. . Really enjoy your videos and love learning more about the power of the pallet knife. Just seems right that a man like you would paint with a knife :) Best wishes, Steven

I am concerned that I am only focused on the abstract quality of what you are doing. That said, I feel you are an abstract painter, the realism sneaks in only because you’re a survivalist who loves to be out in it fending for yourself. You have found a means to place need your communication within a realist or impressionist context rather than an abstract one. I don’t know how your market would deal with abstraction but I suspect your market like mine might not understand your abstract message. It's still up here in Texas, but it isn't a full eclipse for us here. I can't see the moon well at all, for all the clouds we have rolling over us, but I caught sight of it before the sun set.
