Our Walmart has signs citing the city ordinance that prohibits overnight parking, passed at the request of the RV parks. We're a snowbird destination near Phoenix, a town of 52,000 with over 2,000 RV spaces. We stopped for the night in a parking lot in Phoenix, cop told us to move to Walmart, gave me directions. I told him we arrived too late to check in at the nearby RV park and it would take a bit since I had taken my truck off the tow dolly, needed to check in the next morning with my new employer. He came back a few minutes later and said he had obtained permission for us to park there for the one night. That's serving the public!

My wife definitely can appreciate Tara's issues. When we picked our 5th wheel up, over 700 miles away, that trip in one day took her down for over a week. Worst part of the whole trip, she got stuck behind the drivers wheel, for almost 5 hours, driving through downtown chicago (missed going through rockford to toll road), at night, in construction, and started to rain. She is such a trooper, and I felt so bad, but we had zero opportunity to get off. I was also thankful for the large fuel tank!

11:08 Driving without a CDL. I'm against forcing people to get a Commercial Driver's License for non-commercial activity. However, I am for voluntarily getting training so that you can drive a large vehicle safely. And I do have a CDL.
@bli3366

Absolutely agree. So much of the bullshit with most modern laws is trying to coerce, or force through deception, people into interacting with the corporate state through commercial means when so much of what is done is a private--and thus, largely non-governed--activity. I am honestly against driver's licenses being mandatory just to be on the public roadways, when the very "licensing" itself technically makes it commercial activity in and of itself. While you should require a license to deliver pizzas, most jobs don't actually require driving, they just require that you be at the workplace at a certain time, and it doesn't matter if you use a bicycle, a horse, or an automobile. How I choose to get to work is my business, what happens on the clock is the employer's. And simply driving a large or heavy vehicle doesn't require permission from the state in order to do, or using a trailer. But yes, please get training if you're going to be moving anything that requires air-brakes, or is extremely heavy or long.

The “C” in CDL stands for Commercial. For most states you need a A or B “non-CDL” license, depending on the weight of your RV; not a CDL , which requires a medical certificate. The test is easier. If in question, consult your home base DMV Commercial licensing center. They will be the most familiar with this issue.

My boss and her husband wanted to "rent" my new travel trailer. I politely declined. Why would I risk ANYONE destroying a new RV that is financed? They have two small boys who are hell on wheels and would surely break things. I've been approached by others to rent the rig also. The answer is a flat no. I can't imagine why anyone would think that renting a camper or RV is a good idea. There is simply too much risk and very few responsible and knowledgeable people. It's bad enough when RV owners are screwing up so badly and so often. Throw cousin Eddie and his family into the mix with a rental rig, and bad things WILL happen.

Hazardous Materials includes MANY, MANY items ... There are several, on EVERY vehicle that is on the road .... What the Federal Motor Safety Carrier Administration is concerned about, is HOW MUCH... For instance, when I drove a fuel tanker between Grand Junction and Denver CO .. we could not go through Eisenhower tunnel AT ALL. We had to use Loveland Pass. Then, when the pass was CLOSED, we had to wait for one of the 8 hour escorts. They stall traffic 4 am, 12 pm and 8pm and lead hazmat trucks through all at once at 35 mph.. both ways.

@@pouglwaw5932 We had a 19' trailer in VA and had to stop at an inspection station to verify the valve was closed before entering a tunnel. Upgraded to a 24' motorhome and still had to stop for LP inspection, more hassle because I needed to open the compartment vs exposed tanks on the trailer.

Good coverage, thanks for bringing them up so people know what to research. For the flashers in the rain, it's the law in Texas to put on your caution flashers whenever you are unable to maintain minimum speed on the highway (45 MPH), or are a hazard to traffic in some other way (having engine trouble and looking for a place to pull over safely). It does help when we get remnants of the most recent hurricane and drivers of the small, neutral color cars want to drive 20 MPH in the middle lane. (especially since motorcycle helmets usually don't have windshield wipers).

One of my annual R/V related expenses is a publication called "Traveler's Guide To The Firearms Laws Of The 50 States". It spells out everything you need to know state by state about legally traveling with a firearm, and is updated every year to the most current laws. As to weights, you need to know both the empty weight and the loaded weight (including full fresh water tank if equipped) of all your axles, whether you are towing your R/V or driving it. On a towable, you can easily overload the rear axle of your tow vehicle while simultaneously underloading your steering axle, which affects steering traction. Axle weight directly correlates to the amount of air pressure needed in the tires, even on dual tire setups. The more weight that is on a tire, the more air pressure it needs. Tires have maximum air pressure and weight ratings, which are stamped right on the side of each tire. Ideally, you should use four point weighing, where a scale is placed under each tire or set of tires. Without this knowledge, you can easily have more weight on one side of the rig, creating a potentially dangerous imbalance. A common fallacy amongst many R/V owners is that they believe the designers build in the storage spaces in a way that keeps a prospective owner from inadvertently overloading their R/V. That's a belief that will get you into trouble. Incorrect tire pressure is the number one cause of catastrophic blowouts on R/V rigs. If you don't know your weights, you're driving a ticking time bomb. As for R/V'ing in CA, it's on my permanent "No Go" list.

I have towed with this set up for quite a long time and never had any issues with sway like your trying to say. Our state allows 75ft bumper to bumper but also requires and extra set of chains to the far outside of the first trailer. Its a safe set up when done correctly.

Another story. When we were going through Arizona, we were passed by someone pulling a travel trailer that looked to be about 30 feet. They had to be doing 80mph. The next thing we knew, there was debris flying all over the road. He had blown a tire and tore up his trailer pretty bad. Looked like one of his tanks ruptured too judging by the water leaking all over. Probably never thought about checking the speed rating on the tires.

I've witnessed the same thing. A couple passed us in a new travel trailer doing about 75 mph. About 7 or 8 miles up the interstate, chunks of tire all over the road and they were pulled off to the side looking at their blown tire. I always set my cruise on 60 mph and never had a problem...knock on wood. Those tires aren't meant to be driven over 65 mph on most RV's.

Hey guys. I live in Canada and plan on traveling down there soon. Some of this stuff is good to know. But just remember, as hard as it is for you guys to cross into Canada, it's actually harder for us to cross into the US. As for the pet paperwork, that goes both ways. Also, I'm sure you know this, but traveling across borders (especially from Canada into the US) do not... and I mean do not have meat in your fridge or freezer. If they search you, it will be confiscated and you can receive a fine. Great video though guys, and I think John and I would get along pretty good as we seem to have a lot of the same opinions. I gre up with a dad that was a long haul truck driver for over 40 years. He never had a wreck and followed most of the rules. I have learned a lot from him. Does it make me a truck driver? NO! State Park Ranger warned us that it was against the park rules to leave cook pans outside. They checked us daily at breakfast and I figured out that they marked our stay tag. I use O2 machines at night running off my batteries, but must recharge them every day. I do have solar cells that can charge the batteries if it is not cloudy or covered with trees. These places I must run a generator. I have honda, so I tried my best to reduce noise. I only run the generator to charge the batteries and once charged, I turn them off. I don't run my generators to watch TV or play on my computer.

Being retired from trucking, I held a Class B and a Class A CDL in my career and not having a seat belt on was automatic termination! Plus, I drove a school bus for 1 year and per Texas State Laws where I am from, children on school buses are not permitted to move out of their seats during transport and now they have installed seat belts in the regular bus seats for the students to wear. My darling wife can tell you that I am such a stickler for wearing a seat belt that when she gets in the vehicle with me, we don't go anywhere and I will just stare at her until she puts her seatbelt on. So on the whole seat belt issue, I would preplan your snacks and drinks or simply learn to pull over and then get what you're after. As the old saying goes, "Safety First!" I do have a question. How do you find out which states have the CDL laws regarding RV's and which ones don't? As for the whole generator thing, you said a keyword! California! I avoid California and New York at ALL costs. Those very progressive Liberal states have ruined themselves with just endless regulations and rules. Oh and Canada, I avoid! I would rather FLY up to Alaska and rent an RV once there. Canada is INSANE!!! Forget THAT! Their government regulates the heck out of everything! Ours is going that way fast in certain places. Thank GOD I live in Texas! You couldn't PAY me enough to go into progressive Liberal places like California. Here in Texas, we see a LOT of California license plates and families moving here from California and we have a saying, a warning to them. "Don't California MY Texas!". So California is just INSANE and so is Canada! That's why I avoid them at all costs!

The dog needed a vet health certificate but the parrot needed a passport. Yes, just like ours but issued by fish & game, I believe. Our departure was delayed, nearly to the point where we would have to stay put for the winter with family. It took a lot of paperwork and time to get that document, and getting back into the U.S. would have been a huge issue. Parrots are considered exotics and smuggling them is a huge problem. Our baby was hatched in Anchorage, just a few miles from our home, and has never lived anywhere else. She was a great ambassador everywhere we traveled and her passport (and ours) is still valid. It is good for 10 years and has only been used once.😥 My traveling days seem to be over. Our feathered girl will be 20 in September and she will forever be a social charmer.

"but it FEELS SO GOOD!" It's why as i move toward mobile living, i have a little book called "go/no go" - there are states i will visit, and states i will NOT. CA is on the "no go" list. Now, if states don't let people live freely, or install nonsense rules, you go on the NO GO list. Which means: No tourism from me No money from me No purchases in that state for me why can't they just leave us alone, and why can't they concentrate of managing "the bad apples"? JUST LEAVE US ALONE!

How about dumping your gray water in the campsite area? The water doesn't stink unless you store it in the tank vs leaving the gray water valve open from the start.

Someone may have mentioned this but according to FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) Part 387.3 propane tanks on RV's are not regulated since they are an integral part of the trailer and two 40 gallon tanks are way under the reportable quantity. That being said turning off the cylinders while traveling is a good habit to practice.

Just bought a hybrid camper, and been binge watching tons of videos. This is a great video! Luckily my town allows RVs (and campers) to be parked on the property. The only issue that they enforce is that all vehicles must have current registration. If it doesn't have current registration, it must be under a garage or carport. (Basically out of sight) California will definitely not be a state I'll visit. Probably won't be hitting up Canada or Mexico too. The USCCA can help with gun laws state to state. They have a map that can be downloaded showing Reciprocity states. Honestly, it won't hurt my feelings at all to avoid states (and Countries) that will not accept my Indiana permit. Didn't realize the rule about no pets in some National parks. That's a bummer. I kind of get that. Some people are not responsible enough to own pets. Another case of ruining it for everyone else. 🙄

Hey… I 💯 p get what you’re saying… but! Don’t deprive yourself of some of the most incredible wilderness in the country- California! It’s life changing in its beauty and serenity. Just stay out of the big cities or seriously affluent neighborhoods, and BE CLEAN- and I promise you you’ll have zero issues. But… The Sierras… Ojai…. Please don’t miss it!!

I loved the video and very informative. Thumbs up for the sheriff for helping out. But you two missed a big one that RVs break all the time. (Open container law) If you open a bottle of wine, tequila, whiskey, vodka or any other liquid that contains alcohol and you do not finish it and put it in a cabinet or refrigerator it is considered an open container. Or lets say you do finish the bottle off but just put it in the rv's trash container and take off down the road. You have a open container violation. That is a big fine and maybe jail. Please keep the info coming. It is such a great help.

So after doing a lot of searching web pages and talking with some police friends. It all totals to what state and city you are in. Most states they would be legal with an open container within the pulled camper. But not in the cab of the pulling vehicle. But some states allow for the non driver to drink but not the drive. I know this did not clear up the full question but like John said "do your research".

Per California Highway Patrol, everything behind the front seats in an RV is your “house”, and thereby exempt from open container laws, and a warrant is required for a search.

Great video you guys. As previously mentioned, we’ve been RV’ ing since the mid 80’s. Broken a few of these rules , but actually knew all but never thought about the CDL laws across different states. I need to review these laws outside of my home state. Three comments: We never exceed the speed rating on our tires. Very dangerous. We learned the hard way about overloading our coach. It’s very easy to do and created serious coach damage for us. Third and last item- I am fine with drones unless you hover over my property. If it’s within buckshot range…..just kidding….?

If you are pulling a trailer of any kind, don’t drive like a car. Trailers off track. If you stay in the center of the lane in a curve, your trailer will drift into the next lane. A good practice is to drive the center of the lane in the straight away but stay to the top of any curve.

I am with John about laws on your property but I can understand folks that want to live in an area that you keep the guy next door from building a trash heap or pet mill that neglect the animals. Keep it up. My RV days ended this week. I am heartbroken. I worked two years building out a cargo van, and in the icy road a semi slid into me. I think it is totaled but waiting to hear. I will not do another build out and I had to buy what I could get. Vehicle shortage is very real. There is no way I can afford a truck or van with the prices the way they are. 3/4 ton truck $80,000 come on. So, I am done RVing. I will still watch, though. At least none of us was hurt. :)

I just bought a small teardrop travel trailer. It's 17' including the tongue. It's parked in my driveway. Is that illegal everywhere or dependent on your local codes? I can't find a clear answer online about it being illegal. All I've seen for Salem, Oregon is you can't park RV's on public streets unless you're loading/unloading, or you can't park on someone else's property without their permission. The only RV storage available is uncovered behind a chain link fence. I like my property where I can see it.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say about "mooching". The definition of "mooch" is "ask for or obtain (something) without paying for it." Mooch-docking is the very poster-child for "mooching". If you're parking in your friend's driveway and not paying rent, even for a single night, you're mooching (getting something for free) while docking (parking while staying in it), thus "mooch-docking".

I enjoy watching your videos, but I have to say.... if you are setup correctly to triple-tow it is completely safe. 80% of what you said about it was your opinion. Some states do allow triple-towing, but not all states. In tennessee you can triple tow as long as your whole rig doesn't exceed 63ft. I have an F450 crew cab with a 45ft momentum toy hauler, so I definitely would exceed the 63ft limit. I have seen several rv'ers triple-towing that probably shouldn't even be towing a camper in the first place. Also, you are correct about drones. I would love to have one, but so many areas do not allow it. There are areas you can fly one if you have a license from the FAA.

To add to y’all’s knowledge your offering so 1. Anything 65’ combined truck & trailer is illegal in almost every state without removing your truck bed which then makes you a Tractor & trailer instead of truck & trailer. 2 some state actually require you to enter the weigh stations even as a personal vehicle just because of your weight and you can actually be fined heavily for passing a weigh station.

Regarding drones, not having your FAA Part 107 is a law that many people break. Unless it is purely for 100% recreational purposes, Part 107 certification is required. Any use of a drone to further a business requires it. The FAA considers a KZbin channel as non recreational. It won't ever be a problem until something happens, then it could be big problems.

nice review! Drones have to be registered with the FAA AND labeled! My rig is just under the weight limit for CDL in Texas. I drive at 63 mph, just UNDER the speed rating. Many people complain about "CHINA BOMBS".MOST tires are made in China. The "bomb" is holding the steering wheel. This has saved me from wrecks several times. I discovered that the RV dealer had sold me a 5th wheel with defective brakes. Good thing I upgraded the brakes on my tow vehicle (years of experience helps, too). I regularly get flown by with huge rigs going over the speed limit. Most places have lowered speed limits for people towing. I have never gone anywhere that moved away because I took too long to get get there! Van Horn, Texas has a law that prevents boondocking on the street, in any parking lot or bare land. Other places have the same rules. There are several RV parks there, however. Solar power does not work after dark but generators do. California just requested that people stop charging electric vehicles because the grid cannot meet the demand. One thing you did not cover. Some counties have laws that dump lines have to be "above grade". This means you have to have a rack to place it on. It has been over 50 years (last from cats in San Bernardino County 1962, dog 1947) since a case of rabies in humans has occurred from a dog or cat in the USA. It still happens in Mexico. Bats, skunks and foxes are the major sources of human rabies. Another reason not to let pets free roam in wilderness settings.

But different states have different laws in regards to that. Thanks again!

The cops will enforce it the way they enforce snooping in your vehicle, they’ll walk around look inside the windows and if they see anything ‘they’ determine as illegal then ‘we’ gave up the rights to let them snoop even further and under their suspicion unless we agree to let them they can hold us (against our will) until they can get a search warrant. That’s why when we go camping even in state the curtains to the camper are closed shut and tight
