We don't go camping often, but when we do we rent a cabin. But because we bring a lot of stuff like tables and set up our own kitchen area. This inspired me to build one. I just can't for things to "normalize" again and try the chuck box camp kitchen that I built. I hope to impress our friends and acquaintances in the camp site.

People in the comment section may be acting up all smart and criticizing everything shown in the video. But for someone like me who have never even set foot away from civilization this really gives me a boost of confidence, it covers all my reservations about going outdoors. As far as I am considered it fulfills it's role of teaching the basics to an absolute beginner like me.

Hi. Thanks!! Don’t worry about those folks criticizing. We made this video so folks would not be intimidated by going camping. These people criticizing act like you have to be miserable and spend $1000 to go camping. It’s not true. I’ve been really miserable while sitting in a tent at 100 deg. It’s much more fun to enjoy camping. Have fun!

This may not be "roughing it", but I like the way this fellow understands the value of recommending that people start a thing that _can_ be challenging on easy mode. Gives them a better chance of enjoying themselves, and finding the adventure relaxing, the first time, so they're more likely to return to it, & gradually build up their skills.

Hi. Your comment are the reason we made this video. I was a Scoutmaster for 10 years. When I first became a Scoutmaster, I saw young scouts join the troop and if they had a bad first camp out, never came back. I began to make certain that the first camping trip for the young scouts was on a nice weekend with clear instruction in everything they needed. I even kept a few extra items in the scout trailer in case they forgot a pillow or sleeping bag. We had more scouts stay in and earn Eagle. One thing is for certain, if you camp enough, you’ll get rained on, get cold, and just be miserable. The first camp out is not the time for this. My best friend from high school still refuses to camp after a miserable weekend a group of us had probably 30 years ago. 🤣
@mysterylovescompany26574 жыл бұрын
@@useful.knowledge you've done that very effectively, so feel good. :-) I'm not sure what Eagle means; is it like being an elder scout? Where I am, those are called Venturers. It's cool to hear that success story, either way. I personally _love_ camping, & will do it for a week at a time (more, if my buddy of the trip is able), but I also find that - as with most things - enjoyment is easiest when I am not physically uncomfortable. So that means I always make sure I have a menu plan (with contingencies for if energy is low, like canned soup, rice pouches, jaffles etc.), all the gear I know _I_ need, a sleeping situation which works for my specific requirements (chronic injuries from a car accident mean that finding that balance took me a little more time than for the average camper, but I didn't let those initial stumbles put me off), & am warm enough. I honestly believe that _everyone_ has the potential to enjoy camping, but that you just have to sort of baby them the first few times until they're sufficiently invested that you can start letting the experience become more challenging, knowing that it won't ruin the whole concept for them. It's cool that as a veteran of a very long camping career you agree. ^_^ I'm sorry about your friend, & what he's been robbed of. That really sucks. :-(

Tip: Buy a quality blow up pool floaty to use as a mattress. A cement Patch Kit might be something to invest in also. Might want to test it before you go camping to make sure it doesn't go flat in less than 15 hours. Or you might have to blow it up again in the middle of the night if air is making it through the seams. Plus most of them come with a pillow you can blow up. Designed to keep your head elevated in the water. It'll work just as good on land. It would be good option if you have a lot of kids. They'll all can have a personal mattress without breaking the bank.

Great video. My son just turned 15. My first experience camping out was when my son was 10. I thought I had it all figured out. It’s like if I saw your video and took your advise. Only thing is that one has to live it to know it. The night was freezing cold. I was trying to sleep but the cold kept me up all night. That night I could just imagen how cold my 5 year old girl, my wife, and my son were. First thing in the morning my wife said to me, never again. I learned from my mistakes and perchases better tent, sleeping bags, and other things here and there. Up to this day I still get things that I know will add to our comfort of camping out. But one thing for sure is that we will never forget our first camping trip🤣

Hi. Since it’s summertime, take bug spray. Also, take a separate ice cooler for any raw meats. Be comfortable with good bedding and nice pillow. If you vent your tent door, make sure the screen part is zipped so no unwanted bugs and other critters venture into your tent. Do this while you are in it or outside..:.all times! Keep a flashlight next to your head incase you have to get up during the night. Just relax and have a good time.
@blueskeleton77443 жыл бұрын
Hey that is great for someone to explain first stepping stones to camping. Remember to not litter, leave your site better than before! Pack it in.. pack it out. Keep your foods and pantry in vehicles, animals will visit and rummage thru your stuff if left open on table or in tent.. you dont want that. Also pack for foul Weather even though it's nice, it can get worse when in the woods. Best of all, buy yourself a boy scout handbook to guide you further into other outdoor activities. No such thing as bad Weather, its bad gear.

Camping has evolved over the years. Just picking. I did some as a kid and then a lot more as an airborne infantry guy. For those that have never been outdoors/camping, this is a good intro. One of the things that will make life easier when it is decided that a camping trip is in store, is a load-out checklist. The checklist "helps" to prevent leaving something at home. Not a 100% guarantee, but pretty damn close. Right after separating from service the wife says we could go camping. I ask her what shift was she taking, after all security is the #1 priority. I got the "wife look" and we never went camping together.

Your video really helped me , tomorrow am leaving my daughter and wife in the city to have a two night out with my dog and start making KZbin videos about camping in Taiwan where I live , keep it simple is my biggest take away from your video

A good packing up tip: Put your tent and ground cloth in your empty cooler (or a large trash bag) to transport home. It will be damp in the morning from the dew, and will get musty if you pack it up when wet. Dry it out and refold/pack it for the next trip when you get home.
@useful.knowledge3 жыл бұрын
Thanks!! Everyone, this is good info from Simir. You can make your new tent smell miserable if you don't dry it out before you pack it up. Also same goes for your sleeping bag.

Maybe add a part about cooking clean up. It can be very simple, but very important to do properly, especially in bear country. Where to store your food is important, too. Also, where and how to properly do and dispose of “bathroom business” if facilities are not available. Some states have laws regarding both of these things. Great video.

I did the first time Camping in my entire life with a friend whom has zero knowledge just like me...Guess where? Yellowstone National park as we had a cross country road trip from Boston last summer LOL! However, I did tons of research specially here on youtube and all plus I have the Hiking experience, so I knew some essentials. I brought everything including Ice & cooler (Yes begal and cream cheese too xD) EXCEPT Instant Coal fire lol. Thanks for putting *Useful knowledge* out there.

Every time I’m using a wood fire I have leather gloves. If they’re thick enough you can quickly pick up coals and hot sticks. Make sure they have no holes and are thick enough.

Thanks. The idea of the video came from when I was a scoutmaster. We made certain that new scouts had a great/easy first time camping or some would simply quit.

They make charcoal that you can burn the bag too so you have less trash. My boy fishermans life uses that on the beach to cook fish and avocado and butter all day long.

I love the video I usually don’t put a tarp down first under the tent because it traps water under the tent I usually put a 10x20 tarp over the tent anchored to trees so no moisture is on the ground around the tent

I'm a single mum with an 8 year old boy who wants to try something different. Never been camping before and he has been asking about it so thabk you so so much for posting this video which for others may seem mundane, but for people like me it's a gold as it will allow me to bond with my son and do more "masculine" activities

Thanks!! Just keep it simple as shown in the video. You and your son will have a lot of fun.

Can someone please point me in the direction where I can buy a real good air compressor/inflator for air mattresses or floater tubes. The one I have cost me 50 bucks but it takes a good 10 minutes to inflate a floater tube. I think I might be doing something wrong.

I never heard of charcoal to start a fire! What about kindling? That’s what I always use.n
@useful.knowledge5 жыл бұрын
Lisa Quigley. Hi. The main point of the video is for folks that have never started a fire. The instant light will help them have a campfire to enjoy. 99% of the time I personally use kindling. If it’s been raining, I will use a bag of the instant light.

@johnabalos14555 жыл бұрын
Lisa Quigley ......... You can always purchase the small individual fire logs or fire starter sticks at Walmart or Dollar store , super great an easy to start a fireplace or campfire.
