Wonderful video with lots of great tips! One to add- If you don’t have an insulated air mattress/pad, I’ve had good luck just putting a wool blanket over it. Loudly second the purchase of local firewood. And one of the most wonderful winter camping moments I had last year was finding my thick wool socks in the bottom of my sleeping bag in the middle of the night. 😂 So, thick wool socks.

Gorgeous campsite with the ferns! I bought a rotomolded cooler this year, yeah it was pricey but I used one bag of ice for 5 days. The Coleman’s I need to re-up the ice daily. I’d never go back.

great little video, thank you. I also think an essential is how you have your "bathroom" set up. it's important to be responsible with out "waste" how does your family responsibility take care of the if you're not in a campground where there may be a toilet.

Just a heads up for ya, as I see this quite often across various youtube videos. Using a non stick pan after is has been scratched (to bare metal), and definitely scraped up like yours is very bad for your health. Just a small scratch releases TONS of nasty chemicals. You can research the subject if you like. I'd personally recommend carbon steel for camping (very similar to cast iron but not as heavy.) Anything other than teflon/non stick stuff.
@theoutdoorempire3 ай бұрын
Good advice. We use carbon steel at home now.

I noticed you kept saying you were car camping... I'm confused what you mean by that. I thought car camping when when you sleep inside your car?
@theoutdoorempire12 күн бұрын
Ah yes, it probably means different things to different people, but I think of it as when you're camping by your car. I sleep in a tent mostly, but you could be in your car too if you want. I mainly use this term to differentiate from backpacking where you hike down a trail to some destination with all your camping gear on your back.

To start camping, you don't need any gear. Some campsite have small cottages with beds, sheets, utensils and everything. You just need to get there. If you want to camp in a tent, you need a tent obviously and a blanket or a sleeping bag. It's up to you how you want to camp and how much you want to buy, but you definitely don't need to buy everything before you even start and definitely don't have to spend a fortune. Start light, with campsite, weather, distance and spending. Don't listen to people saying this is camping, that is not camping... if you're setting up camp outside your house, you're camping!

First aid should be 1st
@odys38033 ай бұрын
@@adidas4275 First aid is so 1st that I don't even think about it. In my country first aid kit is mandatory car equipment, and every work environment (including shops and stores) are required by law to have a large first aid kit with up to date medical supplies. I carry a boo-boo kit so I don't have to open car med kit for minor scratches and what not.

You're describing systems for an essentials list lol. Essentials are sleeping and cooking. Everything else is luxury. Don't gimme wrong I don't go out and super rough it but camping has become so convoluted and product diluted. The best way to find out what you want camping is to go out bare minimum and you'll figure it out for the next trip. Gear adds up quick financially and takes up real estate FAST. Last thing to keep in mind is packing up to leave sucks if you're over geared.

Where is the bear spray? I understand that mentioning a firearm because it’s a touchy subject, but at least Bear spray. But I am aware some states or areas it’s Illegal. Shoot, I hear in Canada. You could buy a gallon of milk and it comes with Bear spray lol
@theoutdoorempireАй бұрын
Hahaha. Ya, I occasionally carry people pepper, but more folks are recommending against it these days. Where we were camping in this video (Olympic National Park), they advise against bear spray. I'm not opposed to guns, I hunt and what not. Just never felt compelled to carry one all the time when camping. I'm in Idaho and we have a lot of bears, but they generally keep their distance or are even skittish since they're hunted quite a bit here. Never had an encounter yet where a shout and a stick didn't do the trick.

Dude, you need to carry more water. I can't believe you only carry 7 gallons of water for the whole family. I carry 18 gallons and it's just me. You talk about first aid at the beginning... water goes along with that. What if your rig breaks down and you have to be stuck somewhere? Water is not a place to be frugal. You have all that other junk with you but skimped on your water... nuts.
@theoutdoorempire2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. I take water based on where I'm going and what I need. On this particular campout I was in a developed campground in a national park with water on site, so I knew I could refill if needed. But taking more isn't a bad idea!
