Is Bernal the most magical of all the pueblo magicos? Watch as we explore the ancient mysteries and healing energy of one of the Peña de Bernal.
Located on the wine and cheese trail in the state of Queretaro, Mexico, San Sebastian Bernal is a traveler’s destination for food and drink experiences. However, nothing compares to the Peña de Bernal - one of the largest monoliths in the world, that towers over the town.
The Peña de Bernal is linked to ancient mysteries, UFO sightings, and is rumored to have a healing energy that radiates through the town and surrounding area. Talk about a real life pueblo mágico!
Perhaps it is the sheer beauty of the famous monolith that allows the residents of the town of Bernal to live longer than in any other part of Mexico - with an average life expectancy of 95 years old.
Or is it the endless sea of crystals that reside within the monolith and surrounding areas that radiate a magnetic force and cause an abnormally high amount of alien and UFO sightings near the Peña de Bernal.
Some even argue that the Peña de Bernal is located in the center of Mexico AND the center of the world. And that it is a portal between other worlds and dimensions. Its original name, given by the indigenous Otomí-Chichimeca people who consider this site sacred, is De'Hendo - meaning "in between two".
No matter what you believe, our visit to Bernal ended up being one of the most peaceful and relaxing weeks we’ve had so far in Mexico. The town has a slow-paced, relaxed vibe that is hard to beat.
The hike up the monolith was moderate to easy, depending on your fitness level. The first 30 minutes are a breeze, and then it gets a bit tricky and steep. The last tiny bit is reserved for rock climbing and requires a special permit - but this is not necessary to do, you can still get incredible views at the top. There is a $30 peso entrance fee per person to do the hike.
The campground experience, located right beneath the gorgeous Peña de Bernal, was pretty luxurious. And we ended up staying for almost a week. We highly recommend it if you are traveling via van, camper, or RV.

Bernal may be an easy day trip from Santiago de Querétaro, but we think it’s worth staying at least a few days. Even if it’s just to kick up your feet and get some much-needed R and R.
Follow along as we continue the drive down south, all the way to Patagonia! We post a new video each week detailing our adventures.
