What a great tutorial, especially for someone setting up such a bulky tent alone. I've summarized this video step by step and left the notes in my canvas tent bag :) Bought this tent from your suggestion and extremely thrilled with the experience. Just one suggestion for camping beginners - maybe always have the side and back flaps pegged down and not rolled up. I had it rolled up because of the heat, and as a result had rain come inside the tent. Also buy cable ties for the zips, monkeys at Maroela camp have learned how to open up the zips and get inside (even though no food was left inside). Thanks once again for sharing!

Great! I'm glad you found this informative. Those are good points you make about the flaps and the monkeys. We haven't had any monkeys or baboons undo our zip, but we always close the front flap and side flaps when we're away. Thanks for the feedback 👍🏽

For family I think you need the bigger tent. We have the 2.4 x 2.4. That works well for us camping as 2 people.

Some extra thoughts. Mark the underside of the ground sheet with a permanent marker where the door is. This helps to find the front even when the tent is upside down. ALWAYS fold the tent in the same way when you pack it up, then even in poor light, when you are tired, you automatically know where the door is
@TravelGigolo

Good advice. We always fold the tent the same way so we know where the door is. Hadn't thought of marking the bottom of the tent though 👍🏾

Good day to you can you please advise which is the proper method you use to wax your tent using beeswax ,inside or outside seams ? and do you rub it on or melt wax ? your respond will help a lot thanks
@TravelGigolo
@TravelGigolo 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Errol. The leaks I had in my ripstop canvas tent were along the vertical seams of the tent. I used the piece of wax provided with the tent. Initially I tried it on hot day but the wax was too soft and smeared too much. I waited for it cool down and then waxed again (like drawing with chalk along the seams). This worked very well and I have not had a significant leak on the seams since then (more than 3 years now). I expect that I will need to wax the seams again at some time in the future. If it rains and the skull cap is off then it leaks through the horizontal zips of the top vent, so we always use the skull cap in summer. You can also buy a spray on sealant from Tentco or online for the walls. I have not used that. The tent has not leaked through the walls at all. For our nylon tent, moisture would come through the walls if they were touched during the rain. I never got around to using the spray as we almost never use that tent anymore. Hope that is helpful.
@TravelGigolo
@TravelGigolo 2 жыл бұрын
Also, I ran the wax on the indside of the seams. That is much easier than outside, also the outside will collect dust in wax. The water comes through the seam stitching so it's actually a very small area that needs wax if you do it from inside.

Loved your demo. luv south african. My hint to folding my tent the quick n easy way, is to leave the frame up then i fold the tent . The frame holds the tent fold straight as its folded, Quick n easy. Im going to try to fold up thirds, i do it in quarters. verstaan jy my? ie,do you understand?
@TravelGigolo
@TravelGigolo 3 жыл бұрын
Wow that's clever! I had not thought of that. So you keep the frame on while you pull it over from side to side, so it doesn't move about. Thanks I will try that too 👏🏾👏🏾

Good day , I want to buy it, is it true that it is hot inside in spring and autumn?
@TravelGigolo
@TravelGigolo 2 жыл бұрын
It's definitely hotter than a poly (nylon, polyester etc) tent in the sun. At night It's pretty similar if the vents and flaps are open. It's warmer with the vents and flaps closed. Better for wind and rain, but definitely hotter in the sun.
