Ha! Yep those prices in Jackson are no joke. If I was there for a wedding with my gf or wife then you have to spring for the room and that's probably your best choice iF you're on a budget, but when it's just me sleeping for 6 hours it just seemed insane to pay that much. Thanks for watching!

@@bryanhauer I do have to say that it is probably the nicest Motel 6 in the country though. It was clean and perfectly adequate for the few nights we were there. Great video. The maps issue really has stuck out to me. We’re planning on placing an order for a model Y in next couple months so this was something we had not heard about so glad to hear. I noticed this video went live in September, have you seen this issue get any better since originally posting ?

Great videos, appreciate all the detail! May I ask what percentages tint you did on the windows? I’m trying to match that. I’m guessing 20% on the fronts at least? Anything on backs or windshield? Keep up the great work!
@bryanhauer

Nothing on the back as those were already kind of dark and figured I usually travel solo so only did the front 2 side windows. Did 30% ceramic tint. Almost matches the back and still easy enough to see out of even at night.

When you car camp, ever consider going to a camp ground? I don't think that would be too expensive and those campgrounds usually have 220 outlets that can let your car charge overnight and be at 100% when you start the next day.
@bryanhauer
@bryanhauer 3 жыл бұрын
I have camped at a few campgrounds including in some of my videos, but haven't chosen any with hookups like you suggested yet simply because there's been Superchargers usually within 30 minutes of where I was camping and so it didn't justify the extra cost or because most places are just sold out and you end up having to take whatever campsite they have available. Many times campsites with hookups are around $50/night which is like a cheap motel so I've steered clear of those, but in my next video in Yellowstone the campground I end up at did have electrical hookups for $28/night even though my site ($20/night) didn't have it, so that's not too bad. Also, I had plans to go to Glacier National Park and because of my cargo box the nearest Supercharger is just out of range so would have to book a campground with preferably a 30AMP or 50AMP hookup to even make that one happen. You'll probably see me do that more often here coming up and in the Spring I'll for sure be doing more of that. Thanks for watching and commenting 😀

I wonder how spacious a Model Y would be for my wife and I to sleep in and explore. We are both slim in figure, her being about 5 foot 7 and I am about 5 foot 11. Also, during college, I took an outdoor recreation class and got kicked out when the teacher asked me what the best way to defend against a bear attack was. My answer to that was to use a shotgun. He wasn't amused by my answer apparently. Maybe pepper spray or yelling at the bear would have been the better answer.
@bryanhauer
@bryanhauer 3 жыл бұрын
I think it would probably work for you both. I wouldn’t say it would be super comfortable for more than a few days, but for camping or a road trip here or there it would be fine. As for the bears… I do have a couple bear sprays and a few other sources of defense , but for a grizzly those would probably just made it mad. I think bear spray is probably the way to go 😀

Found your channel during a deep KZbin session bc I am considering buying a Tesla Model Y for myself- and I just found it super interesting that you were at Grand Teton national park around the time they found Gabby Petito. I personally had never heard of this particular park - now it’s kind of all over place! Wonder if the algorithm matched your video to me since Ive been watching tons of Tesla vids and following along w the Gabby case 🤔 Anyway, Ive really enjoyed your content so far. It’s nice to see your experience IRL. I do have one question! It seems like most videos I see on KZbin everyone goes to only the Tesla super chargers - instead of maybe just a regular EV charger that may be closer. Is there a reason for that? For instance in my city - if u were passing by on the freeway - there’s a huge EV charging station at my local Walmart (right off the highway) but we have a Tesla Supercharging station maybe 5 miles down the same highway. What would be the reason to pass the one from Walmart up to go to the actual Tesla charger? Just curious!
@bryanhauer

Hey thanks for the comment and for watching. The crazy part of the Gabby case was that when I saw on the news where she was found, I looked it up on Campendium cause they said it was a dispersed camping spot and from what I could tell was only about 15-30 minutes from where I was. I looked up the timeline and they were about a week ahead of me as I didn't leave Vegas till Sept 3rd and didn't get to that area till the 6th, but did realize when I was camping there her body was most likely still there which was just a weird feeling. As for the charging question... easiest way to break it down is think of iPhone and the Lightning cable and Android and the USB-C cable. Tesla created their Supercharging cable just like Apple created the Lightning cable and is proprietary to their network. Elon has stated they did this because there weren't really any other EV makers then so they needed to create the first. There are some advantages to that because they control the whole experience. Later on when others started making EV's they decided together on originally Chademo and now CCS (which is the main standard in Europe for all EV's, including now Tesla) which is similar to Android the the USB-C cable where all other phone manufacturers use the USB-C standard while Apple still uses Lightning (although they have switched all MacBooks and iPad's to USB-C. Now that we've got that out of the way, I can answer your question... Only Tesla's can charge at Tesla Superchargers although they announced they will be opening it up to other cars soon using an adapter. On the other side of it why do Tesla's not charge at other EV chargers? Answer is because it's not as easy (they are often broken & you have to setup separate accounts at each like EV Go or the Walmart ones are usually Electrify America) while Tesla Superchargers don't even have screens on them or ways to pay outside of the Tesla account you setup with a credit card in the Tesla app when you buy the car, but the main reason is speed and adapters. Most Tesla Superchargers are 150kW or 250kW. What that means is 150kW can charge a Tesla that's under 20% back up to 90% (the last 10% takes a long time so most don't charge that high if they're in a hurry) in about 30-45 minutes while a 250kW can in about 20-30 minutes. If you used one of the other EV charging stations like you mentioned you'd have to use an adapter. Currently there is no officially supported adapter for the CCS standard (there is a Chinese company making an adapter, but it's not officially supported by Tesla and costs about $500+) and the Chademo standard is on it's way out so most charging stations don't even offer it anymore or only have one stall with it and that adapter costs $450. But even if you are cool with spending that kind of money, it only will charge up to 50kW which would take hours and hours to charge up. Other cars like the Ford Mach-e can or VW ID-4 can charge at much higher speeds, but because of the lack of adapters or limitations by Tesla allowing it, there's no high speed options for charging outside of the Tesla Supercharging network. Also those small charging stations you see at some hotels or Whole Foods are super slow. Those are usually 8-16kW which means you'd have to charge overnight to even see any real gains. Those are great if you're in the middle of nowhere at a hotel and can plugin overnight, but otherwise are pretty useless. It really comes down to there aren't any adapters that are reasonably priced or that can charge at high speeds for the Tesla outside of their own. Hopefully that changes soon. Europe has made CCS the only legal standard so Tesla is making all their cars over there able to use the CCS plugs just like you see here at the Electrify America's at Walmart's. I think that about covers it 😀 The Tesla Supercharging network is best in class, super reliable and easy to use, but they need more of them and they need the layouts of the charging stations redesigned. Currently it's almost impossible to tow anything and still charge without unhooking and backing in isn't a great solution long term because of towing, but also it takes up too much space. I imagine they did this cause they were new and growing and it was easier to get places like Target or other businesses to let them use the back row of a usually empty parking lot, but now that they're a huge car company they need to renegotiate and rethink the design. One thing gas stations got right is the layout. It's super convenient, covered fro weather, allows for longer vehicles and is easy to pull in. Plus with the Tesla CyberTruck coming soon they won't even fit great into regular current charging spots. Prediction: In 10 years instead of seeing Shell, BP & Chevron gas stations, you'll see Tesla, Apple, Rivian, Electrify America, maybe Google charging stations with convenient stores attached. I mean those other gas stations probably won't be totally gone, but you'll see just as many of the new breed of charging stations. Hope that all helps. Let me know if you still have questions.

@@bryanhauer Surprisingly, that all makes perfect sense!! Ya don’t know until ya know, right? Lol. I just assumed the adapters came with the car, but now that you explained it, I wouldn’t pay extra to get an adapter to charge somewhere else that isn’t really worth my time! Luckily, if I do choose to go with a Tesla MY (the wait time as of yesterday was April 😖) I only will need to worry about super chargers when I’m traveling since I plan to charge at home for my day to day use. One of the other observations I’ve made during my YT research is that, it does seem like there is a lot of stops to charge - but I feel like it’s just Bc we are watching a short video whereas in real life it’s most likely hours in between charges. Do you feel like you have to stop more than you would in a gas car? For instance, if you were driving all day, how many stops would you typically make (and this is just for long road trips specifically - with all your extra weight for luggage and such)? And do you ever feel like you ever have to go out of your way to get to a charger? Minus charge time which I know can vary between 10-60 mins depending on where u are and how much u need, do u feel like getting to chargers adds a lot of time to your travels? Thank you so much for replying and sharing such useful information!! Greatly appreciated 😁

You will get 2 plugs/adapters with your Model Y. One is so you can plug into a regular household outlet, but this is super slow and is usually only used in an emergency as you'll only get about 4 miles of range per hour added using this method (it's like plugging in your phone to charge). The other adapter is a J1772 adapter which allows you to charge at non-Tesla chargers like at hotels/resorts or sometimes libraries and occasionally you'll see that at grocery stores like Whole Foods or even Kohls parking lots. These also charge fairly slow, but faster than the household plug, but again you won't gain much here without being plugged in for hours and hours. Nice if you're low on charge and plan to be inside a mall for a few hours or at a hotel/resort overnight, but otherwise useless. As for charging stops... I've now driven about 16,000 miles since the beginning of May and I've found that if you travel that much, you will definitely be stopping a lot more. While the Tesla Supercharger network is the best in the world and has more coverage than any other network, it's still not as convenient as gas and as MKBHD (Marques Brownlee) said in his 1000 mile gas vs Tesla vs Ford Mach-e test with EV's you currently find yourself planning your day around charging when on trips and with gas it's an afterthought and you just do your thing and gas up whenever. Obviously EV's are still in their infancy so it'll only get better and probably pretty fast, but currently if you don't plan to travel every week like I do, you'll never have to worry about any of this. You'll just charge your car at home every night like you charge your phone. Nice advantage is then over gas is you never have to go to a station. Your car is always full and ready to drive. My case is a bit different because I have the cargo box up top so I lose 25% range off the top just with that, but most people don't have that so if your Model Y Long Range is rated at 326 miles per charge, you should expect to get around 275-305 on avg unless the terrain is extremely mountainous. You can safely run the car down to just under 5% and feel confident in what the car is telling you as far as range left. With the cargo box I have a lot of guessing as it's usually somewhere between 10% - 35 less than what it says, but most will never have to worry about this. The only time I've felt like it was a pain in the ass was in Jackson/Grand Teton because there is only one charger station in Jackson at Whole Foods and so I have to strategically plan my day out. One option is to plan ahead and get a campground with a 50amp or 30amp hookup. Tesla sells adapters to use on these and are only $35 each. Then you can charge overnight and expect to get a full charge overnight. That's what I'll have to do if I travel to Glacier National Park because with the cargo box I'd never make it there and then back to the Supercharger. To sum it up... 99% of people will never have to worry about any of this and can charge at home every night and occasionally at Superchargers when low or on a trip and everything will work out great. If you plan to be in the middle of nowhere you'll need to look at the Supercharger screen or the Plugshare app to see what charging options you have besides just Superchargers. If you're charging at home you'll want to use the 220v outlet like a dryer outlet which usually charges at 30amps and will give you about 21 miles per hour of charging or spend a bit extra and have an electrician throw in a 50amp so you can get around 30 miles per hour of charge. At my place in Nashville, my garage's back wall is on the same wall as the dryer so I just drilled a hole though it as have a sliding door that opens and closes if I'm charging or not and didn't have to get anything else installed. I'll probably do a video on this when I get back later in the fall. Hope that helps! Best car I've ever had, but because it's fairly new to the market there's still some quirks occasionally you have to deal with like charging. It's good 90% of the time though.

@@TheTiffishWay Not a problem. Glad I could help. It’s been a learning process for me as well so am happy to share what I’ve learned. Sounds like you’re all setup at home and for trips to both of those places you won’t have any issues outside of grabbing a bite to eat or taking a long stroll to the bathroom when charging compared to 5 minutes with a gas car. Once you drive it, you’ll be completely fine with the current trade off 😀
