Another tip: Open a map!! I have two kids, we are based in Melbourne and just came back from a 10 day trip to the coast and over the aus day weekend too. So basically i ignored all the tips - day drive from populated city, peak season, coastal :). We didn't camp alone - but we sure weren't overcrowded and did spend most days alone. On tracks, hiking trails, and beaches - all either deserted or almost such! The caravan park we stayed at was tiny and friendly - something you want with little kids anyway. How? Open a map! Find the national/state parks no one goes to! The hidden gems, the caves and volcanoes and rivers and beaches. Look at paper maps for initial planning. Look at google maps to see "what's there" - and at satellite images to look for beaches. Stick a random pin in and see what that area has to offer - and it's likely something surprising.

Red hot tip for Fraser Island: Get the barge over via River Heads. You can book a specific time and not deal with the chaos trying to get on an off the island using the Manta Ray Barge during peak periods at Inskip Point.

Found the station stays in the Flinders ranges are the way to go. For a small fee you get to look around their property and enjoy everything on offer. The best part is they only allow a set number of people in the camping areas and each spot is separated enough that your pretty much on your own. Our last trip we camped away from anyone but we met other people camping and caught up for chats and experiences when we desired to. Plenty of stations to pick from, try it.

One tip for campsites that’s kinda going on the other side of what the boys said, sometimes the one that doesn’t look that great, can be the best one there. And if there are people around, you never know if you can make some great new mates!

i work in out door Ed, so basically paid to camp and 4wd. Even though my company has many private camp grounds all across Australia, My tips would be to just explore around, go find the places, we do a Recon every now and then to scout new camp sites and accessibility, also being on good terms with Vic parks and other people help, just talk to people. We have secured a private land around the grampians for camping just by talking to people, getting to know them. try to avoid popular landmarks, go to camp sites you might have to walk in, we know a few that are only walk accessible but they have some of the only few remaining original huts in the high country.

Out of season is a good idea, but it can suck... When I was at uni living on a student's income, I found that Cairns accommodation and flights were way cheaper in January. Like half price. So I went. I would take my boys up to the high country East Vi. Up Licola way then back down or onto Jamieson for many spots you see no one. Some beautiful Places. One day I pray for a motor home now that kids are grown and go all over but, not with me. A motor home I could join up with friend and camp again, then travel around. Ah the dreams. I keep buying camping things, But the old bombs a problem . State forests, camp spots are great In some parts of the high country, camping and no where near others, own part of the river, Just beautiful.
