I had no idea there were dry valleys in Antarctica. Definitely looks like an alien landscape.

AFAIK veery strong katabatic winds keeps this area ice free.

My wife Laura Zucconi was back from Antarctica just a couple of weeks ago, from her 5th mission. She studies endolithic community in the Dry Valley... but she never shot any video as good as yours!

Camillo - That's so awesome! If she could use a field microscopist, please do send me an email. I am partnering with Antarctic research teams who could benefit from having one. I love cryptoendoliths! Shot some macro photos a while back and they're so cool to think about.

You can tell you love what you do. That’s awesome. 😊 And that lake was really gorgeous. Fun to see all the different things they have over there.

You know, in that first panning shot from the helicopter coming into the Dry Valleys, my first thought was "I wonder who left all that rubbish on that small beach?" Then it turned out to be the camp. Perspective is a wonderful thing.
@AndrewWorkshop5 жыл бұрын
That's really fascinating, where does the funding come from to keep the camp running?
@ArielWaldman5 жыл бұрын
Andrew W - taxpayer funded U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF)

Awesome stuff. How cool is it that we have people that are down there, meanwhile we have people in Death Valley and at Mt Everest. Humans are so very adaptable. Gives me an idea for a follow up trip!

Do you have any restrictions on where you can explore? Thanks for your videos! 😁

Chromedaffodils - yes, many! Many locations like Lake Bonney require special permits, etc.

How do they have Energy there at the dry valley? Solar or wind or geothermal or nuclear and batteries or how does it work?
@zapfanzapfan5 жыл бұрын
Very cool place, pun intended! ;-) No diving in that lake? Are there microbial mats on the bottom of that lake like some others? What you are seeing could be Gale Crater on Mars 3 billion years ago :-)
@ArielWaldman5 жыл бұрын
I had heard of someone who does dive into the lake for research apparently. The microbial mats that produced the rotifer in the video were in a ditch next to the lake. Definitely fun to draw parallels to Mars!
@zapfanzapfan5 жыл бұрын
Do you have any link to an image the researcher in the tent took of what the bottom of the lake looked like? Chris McKay had a slide in one of his presentations about diving in one of the lakes but I think it was Lake Untersee. The microbial mats there looked like the beginnings of stromatolites and that would be very exciting to find on Mars. I looked it up now, that lake is on the other side of the continent :-) The rotifer eats the microbial mats?

6:05 studying bacteria from blood falls,7:50 antibacterial hand wipes,never the twain shall meet.Seriously though are there restrictions on what you can bring with you to such a near pristine environment?
@ArielWaldman5 жыл бұрын
Yes - many restrictions put in place by both NSF and the international treaty that oversees Antarctica. For example, all human waste goes into buckets that then get shipped off to be disposed of back in the USA because we can leave no trace. In the field camps, you use outhouses with buckets.

Admiral Byrd discovered the dry valleys first flying over Antartica 1926, and again on operation Highjump 1946..Anartica is not a solid ice landscape, these dry valleys go further than the Souh Pole, Byrd said beyond the pole is an area bigger than the United States thats unexplored..

@@ArielWaldman I hope you successfully bring an assistant because it would be good for you both. I was half joking but it would be worth it to me to assist you for the experience alone. And I am sure there are those who would cover their own expenses to be a part of your research and to enjoy the setting first hand and I am one of them. :)

Nice. All those people living there surely aren't going to pollute the fragile ecosystem and introduce alien microbes to this valley previously untouched for millions of years.
