CAMPING in the wind and rain - testing out the MSR Hubba NX in bad weather
It feels so good to be back!
Hi EVERYONE! In this video I go on my first wild camping trip since lock down easing in England and it quickly turned into wild camping in the wind and rain. I was able to test out the MSR Hubba NX tent in the bad weather along with my directional skills (also bad) in the clag!

I watched another video on the Hubba. When it is raining you can setup the rainfly first to keep the rest of tent dry. Rainfly first, then footprint, and finally the tent main body. Keep the tent body and footprint in a dry bag separate from the rainfly to keep it dry while putting the rainfly up. Actually I am not sure if he did the rainfly first or the footprint first. It seems like the rainfly would be first. I am going to give it a try when the tent arrives.

I don’t think it’s possible mate as the only way the fly can stay up is because it sits on the structure of the inner and poles. Have a look when you put it up. Thanks for commenting and watching 👍🏻 really appreciate it

@@SimonOutdoors Hi Simon it is possible to put the Fly/ cover on first, its a bit of a faff but keeps the inner dry, you can also use it as a shelter without inner pitched, but you've probably worked this out by now cheers.

I also feel the MSR range getting unfairly judged re durability in windy conditions . its all about the extra guy lines and keeping them taut . I swapped out the cord in the poles for new and t also made a difference once the tent is a few years old.

I have an MSR Elixir2 and I live on the coast of Mid Wales, and yes it gets a little gusty at times lol. I purchased 4 Delta pegs and it was a great investment as staking those out on strategic points of any tent gives you that extra confidence normal pegs don't. I've camped in two storms so far (between 60 to 80/85 mph winds) and my tent was going nowhere due to those Delta pegs I reckon.

A HOT meal when camping is always tasty, especially when it's windy, cold, & or rainy. Do yourself a favor, Simon. Get a small patch of Reflectix & then wrap it around a 750ml Titanium cup to form a Koozie then secure it with some tape. You want the Reflectix to cover sides, top, & bottom of cup. Next time, take your 750 ml cup out of it's Koozie, boil water, put the cup/boiling water back into it's Koozie, pour your Freeze Dried meal out of its foil pouch & into the cup. No need to use the foil pouch. Wait for your meal to rehydrate. The Koozie greatly reduces heat loss during the re-hydration of the meal. When you are ready to eat, you'll most likely find the food TOO HOT. You'll be able to enjoy a HOT meal right down to the last spoonful. Once you've made a Koozie for your Titanium cup & used it to retain heat you'll wonder why you never thought of this method B4. You'll then want to make a video & share this lil cooking trick/treat with the world. AZClaimjumper from Reno, Nevada in U.S.A.

This is brilliant advice, many thanks mate. Do you know where I can get the Refectix, I'm in the UK so probably amazon? Thanks for messaging all the way from Nevada! I hear you have some great mountains to explore over there. Take care, Simon
@azclaimjumper
@azclaimjumper 3 жыл бұрын
@@SimonOutdoors I'd try Home Depot or any business that deals with builder's supplies You might even have some & not even realize it. Reflectix is the material used to make those sun shades people put behind the windshield to block the sun while parked. Yes, Simon, there are a lot of mountains nearby that have trails & or bushwhacked. I do a lot of geocaching. And speaking of Mountains the high Sierra's are nearby which separate California from Nevada. As I was watching your video inside your MSR Hubba NX I was thinking about my own COLD gusty windy overnight along the Rim to Reno 25 mile trek from The Mount Rose trailhead to the Thomas Creek trailhead. I encountered COLD STRONG gusty winds @ 9,000', fortunately, I'd put heavy rocks on top of the 10 stakes I needed for my REI Quarter Dome SL 1 tent + its 3 guyout lines. I didn't sleep because of the noise of the strong gusty winds which blew my tent to & fro all night. However, my tent did its job & provided me with protected shelter from the COLD gusty winds & I was comfy warm inside my sleeping bag.

Any good quality hiking/backpacking tent from the big reputable manufacturers is great in fair weather. What separates them is how they perform in total shit weather. I have a chepo Rokk backpacking tent that my wife and I bought new for about a hundred dollars from an old Army surplus store 16 or 17 years ago. We had no idea at the time about hi tek hiking/backpacking gear and we thought this tent was badass. Well in reality it was compared to the 8 or 9 pound Coleman 3 man tent we used on our first 2 hikes. We used the crap outta that tent for years in nice weather and in serious shit weather out on the coast of Washington and in the North Cascades Mountains and it never let us down. Stayed anchored down in 50+mph wind and stayed dry in solid sideways sheets of rain on multiple trips. My daughter and I literally spent 2 days cooped up in it playing checkers and card games due to wind and total downpour rain. It was so wet on that trip our rain gear was wet all the way through. Stayed warm and dry in that tent. We have since upgraded to really nice, solid, quality equipment but that little "chepo" tent will always have a special place in our heart of travels. I still have that tent and its still solid and I wouldn't hesitate to bring it out of retirement and use it if I needed to.

Nice one buddy, thanks for watching and commenting. Always remember my first tent too, a Berghaus 3.1, brilliant little tent and fond memories. There’s a lot of dross around at the budget level these days, I bet years ago the tents were solid. Having said that there will be some exceptions. I’ve recently purchased a fjallraven for that reason, I wanted a 4 season solid tent I can rely on in bad weather as I’ve had tents break on me in bad conditions. Looking forward to testing it. Some great comments there, many thanks 👍🏻 glad you and your family got out in some adverse conditions and were safe. Take care, Si

@@SimonOutdoors I find it very cool that you reply to many of the comments. 👍 Our first backpacks were the old external aluminum frame ones our parents used in the 70s and all we had was basic "car camping" gear such as sleeping bags that when rolled up were probably 12-14 inches in diameter and weighed about 6 or 7 lbs. Big huge bulky sleeping pads that were 3 inch thick memory foam, plastic military issue canteens, a mini Mr. Heater heater with a 1 pound propane cylinder, an old Camping Gaz bunsen burner stove and that 3 man Coleman dome tent I previously mentioned. Our base weight with that equipment was probably 50 pounds. They were super heavy, awkward, and extremely uncomfortable but it gave us a start and lite a spark. We never had a lot of money in those days and no knowledge of "hi tek" hiking gear so when we upgraded we upgraded with chepo stuff like that Rokk tent and our Rokk Front Range backpacks, and Coleman inflatable sleeping pads. We put a lot of miles and many trips on that stuff before we got turned on to the hi tek stuff and had the money for it. However as a result of those experiences we have a Great appreciation for our hi tek stuff like our Osprey Xenith and Xena packs. Our MSR pocket rocket deluxe stove, the Klymit insulated sleeping pads, our Hyke and Byke sleeping bags, platypus water pouches, Toakes titanium cook pot, MSR hubba hubba nx2 tent etc...etc...etc.. A piece of gear that may intestate you would be the AquaQuest tarps. They're Awesome!!!! Super light weight and 1000% waterproof. I think a 10'×7' is $80 and a 10'×10' is a $100 and they're a great addition for backpacking in crappy harsh weather for added protection. Anyhow stay safe out there bud and enjoy!!!

@@SimonOutdoors I did sub & rang the notification bell. Most, if not all, ultralight weight tents need larger, stronger, heavier tent stakes, that a given. In my mind, I've not properly pitched my tent until all the guylines are staked out. I've NEVER had to get out of a warm sleeping bag because tent stakes have been pulled out of the ground. It's a soul satisfying thing to snuggle into a sleeping bag inside a tent during a cold gusty windy night as it provides "shelter" from the storm. Surprised it held up tbh. But thats fair enough. The problem with these US manufactures is that they don’t understand just how windy it is in the UK under fairly ‘normal’ conditions. As such, the tents just don’t hold up as they need to. For me, Hilliberg tents are the only ones I’d trust. Especially when I have my young daughter with me. Yes they are a bout heavier, but you can mitigate against that by cutting weight elsewhere. The Allak 2 is still only around 3kg
@SimonOutdoors
@SimonOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dominic, I do really like MSR mostly because of this particular trip. Do you think Hilliberg are overkill for what we have here in the UK? I'm thinking a lot of them are built for snow! @@SimonOutdoors - it's a weird one mate. We are kinda stuck between extremes in the UK because of our humid climate which means we get mainly moderate weather but it's the wind that causes the problems. I've got friends from the US who come over and stay fairly regularly and they are genuinely shocked at how wild it gets. And that can bring with it extreme cold too. So moisture management becomes a big problem. With my hiking gear, balancing breath ability and wind / rain protection is a pain. So hard to get the balance right. With tents it's the same - but in the form of condensation. That's where the Hilleberg are pretty good, I think. For 4 season tens they vent very well, but they are also the only manufacturer I totally trust when it gets really wild. But it's also why lots of people in the UK either have 2 tents, or keep constantly changing them, trying to get the balance right. That's why I like the Allak - it's roomy enough to aid with the condensation, but still passably lightweight to make it kinda practical. Lol.
@SimonOutdoors
@SimonOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
@@theknowlodge8294 yeah I think you’re spot on. 50mph wind is 50mph wind and I know which tent I would rather be in when that happens. And we certainly get a bunch of those every year in the UK. I think even the lightweight models are super strong, I’m looking at an Unna and the light Akto model (can’t remember what it’s called) and I’m sure they fair pretty well. Nothing worse than worrying about your tent blowing away in high winds and we’ve been there!

@@SimonOutdoors absolutely fella. I've been on some very ropey trips and that's largely what convinced me to pony up the cash for the Hilli. I just don't feel that confident in anything else. The Akto is very popular. Seen it loads on the Hill. And the Unna - is that a lighter version of the Soulo.? Can't remember. Like I say, I like the Allak because of that extra space which helps with everything - ventilation, storage, cooking, comfort generally. But they are all very strong and reliable. Had a Terra Nova and that was bomber too tbf, just not quite enough space. And didn't like the layout on the bigger tents.

I’ve also got the NX solo and it is my favourite tent ever. I think there was a problem with the 2019 tents but both my MSR Hubbas have neatly taped seams 👍🏻

I’m not so sure Jason, I would hope any quality branded tent would as long as it’s guyed out properly and the winds are say less than 40mph but who knows. Thanks for the support mate 👍🏻

I wouldn't agree I'm afraid. Bought one of the new laser compact 'all season'. Failed on first outing. One of the short poles broke in conditions similar to what you had in this video. All season didn't even last all night. Returned it, waiting for a refund. MSR Hubba might be it's replacement.
