I have had 2 of these stoves stoves for years used exclusively when off roading in a Jeep, so it gets bounced around a lot and never had a problem. One thing you failed to mention is lighting the stove in the morning with butane for coffee when the temperature is below 32 degrees. You best have a bottle of propane with you because the butane won’t light below freezing.
@lukegodin8653

@TheOutdoorGearReview there is one more safety warning that was not mentioned. These stoves are to only have a 8 or 10 inch pot or pan area due to the fuel canister compartment area can over heat the butane or propane hose and cause a safety issue of explosion. What happens is that a larger cooking pot or pan will cover the fuel compartment and cause a tremendous heat build up. Great review as usual and thank you for your great content.

I've used this stove for several decades for presentations as Chef. It works great, but can get fairly hot. But the great benefit is it's portability, easy set up and efficient use of propane. On a scale of 10 I give it a 8.

May seem a bit flimsy but I have never seen a broken one. When I first took my Family camping we used two of these and they worked flawlessly. In the loft for emergency use now. The big plus of these is (a) they are cheap as chips(fries USA) (b) the fuel is also very cheap/ cheap depending on the mix and in the UK/EU the Butane gas canister is available just about everywhere.

I have the exact same one by it says shinestar 7,200 BTU I purchased on Amazon for 29.00 it will run on the large propane tanks, the only thing you must remove the regulator off of the line for the large tanks because the pressure is to low for the stove. I just use the regulator that is already on the stove. I have used this stove for pressure canning vegetables from the garden.

These stoves came in handy during the recent power outage. I bought both the blue and black stoves. I sometimes make pancakes on a griddle and use both stoves simultaneously to do pancakes and bacon. The case for the black stove has already fallen apart, literally in pieces. The latches on the blue case barely keep the case closed. I found an old gym bag up in my attic and now both stoves are stored in it and are protected by pieces of one of the blue closed cell foam I cut to fit them. The stoves work very well and literally light instantly when I activate the piezo switch. A case of fuel was very inexpensive at Amazon and there's probably enough to last for several camping trips. I love these stoves and having a hot cup of coffee during the power outage was satisfying. Great review, Luke!

Don't use a pan that is to big for this (I think that they recommend no bigger than a 10 in pan) You don't want a pan that is too big hanging over the fuel cannister and heating it up!

As i see your point I don't think it would radiate enough to heat the the metal shield and then radiate again enough heat to have anything happen. Since heat rises just the simple flow of air should be more than adequate to cool the metal shield since it has such low mass.

Iwatani is the first company in Japan to mass manufacture portable butane stove like this in 1969, mainly for Emergency use when the power goes off..... As you well know that Japan experiences disaster on a regular basis..... E.g Tsunami, Typhoon and earthquake. All other companies after that in Korea, China & lately Vietnam copied Iwantani's original design..... They produced them cheaply but not necessarily of better quality..... Iwatani have a few patented safety and efficiency features that is not present on the cheaper brand models..... (1) Heat transfer panel - During use, Butane canister tend to become very cold because it is basically a liquid fuel and the delivery is that of an aerosol propeller system. Hence, there will be some fuel left inside the canister after completion.....Unless the canister temperature is maintained at an optimum by the "heat transfer panel" which is essentially a metal plate connecting the stove head to the canister.... (2) Auto ejection or cut off system - On the older model of Iwatani stove with the lever system to connect canister to regulator, it is a cut off method when due to misuse... E.g overly large pan that overlap into the canister space.... the canister is heated up to a high temperature & the pressure inside the butane canister will build up to an explosion point..... The latest Iwatani stove uses magnet to connect the canister to the regulator..... It will eject the canister automatically, when the pressure inside the canister exceed beyond 70 psi. I assure you that the cheaper stove do not have these efficiency or Safety feature. Maybe one day China or Vietnam manufactured stove might include them.... Who knows....? The question is - Do you trust their quality control when it comes to Safety features in Butane or Propane gas stove.....? Some of the more expensive Butane canister sold, have a build in Safety feature called CRV - Countersunk Release Valve..... Essentially, it is valves that will release build up gases in the heated up canister to avoid an explosion.... You will be surprised to learn that many owners of Butane stoves do not read the operating & safety manual that comes with the product..... All because it looks deceptively easy to operate, but there are basic ground rules that invite disaster if ignored.... Rule 1 - Do not stow Butane canister near heat source. Rule 2 - Do not operate stove in extremely hot weather & out in direct sunlight. Rule 3 - Do not use cooking utensil that exceed the perimeter of the stove and overlap into the Butane canister space. Portable Butane stove is a great invention, but do buy only the reputed brands for their safety and manufacturing quality control reasons..... It is not worth losing life and limb just to save a couple of bucks. Goggle for "portable cassette stove disasters in Australia"..... and you will see what I mean....

I have had one for a while now. I like it. There is one danger. It seems to be difficult to get the butane can to line up and seat into place. While doing so butane can squirt all over the place. Don't hit the starter until that liquid butane has had a chance to evaporate away. A huge fire ball will result. Ask me how I know that.

I used to have one and for safety reasons I always use propane canister. There are many sad cases of butane canister explosion, either due to long continuous use or over-sized pan that "spread" the flame too close to the canister compartment. Mine eventually gave up the ghost after 3 or 4 years of occasional use because my friend accidentally stepped on it the second time. First time the sheet metal was badly mangled but I managed to pry it back, no such luck the second time round though. So yeah, it is flimsy, but still has some basic strength.

The cases for these are still super flimsy, but man these are good little stoves for the price. They're very light and very compact and there aren't a lot of moving parts or things that could easily break. Because I occasionally use these in cold weather, I went with a dual-fuel so I could connect to a propane tank. I have a 5-lb propane tank and, with an adapter, I can power two of these stoves for a whole week.

These little butane stoves are pretty efficient as long as they don't get too cold. The below freezing point is where having that propane capability will pay off as butane tends to not want to vaporize below 32f where propane doesn't have that problem. That's why I like those little Isobutane canisters because the addition of a propane in the blend helps push the vapor temp down allowing it to work at lower temps.

I just bought the 8000 but Gasone version of this stove for $30. I agree I think these stoves are identical just different names. I was debating going with the higher BTU version. I came to the conclusion it didn't make sense to get a stove that was going to use twice the fuel for more than double the price. Also when I went to buy the stove it seemed like you couldn't find the higher BTU version which also made me wonder if they had pulled it from the market. I'm very happy with the stove I purchased as well and would recommend it too!

This is crazy! How people rediscover things. I had such stove in South Korea maybe 15 years ago. And I vaguely remember I bought it for about 15 USD at the time. It was also very popular with many street food vendors.

I have one myself that I use in my van everyday. It has been amazing. The best part of it is I always keep a butane canister on me, and when my 5lb propane tank runs out, I have several days of cooking left with the butane until I get my tank refilled. It's worked perfectly for the entire time I have had it.

I have 2 different versions of this stove. A duel fuel plus a single (butane) which has a hot plate. I use the case as a windshield.

Luke👍👍 Another fair and honest review, how nice. Yeah, for the most part I think you're right, one company many labels...🙄 I've had a Camp Chef version for ever, works great with no failures, the plastic carry case is junk and it's butane only but duel fuel versions haven't been around all that long. $35 seems in the ball park for the quality, good burner, crappy metal housing and cheapy case. Keep em' coming bro. Enjoy!

Terry M I’ve had the CampChef dual fuel version for almost 2 years now. Also picked up an adapter to connect to larger propane tanks and have been satisfied with its performance. Great for spur of the moment outdoor cooking.

Ill stick with my msr xgk, but for someone just weekending or getting into it its not a bad first buy till you figure out what your wanting. If your going to be doing more serious stuff even car camping then a better build dual burner is the way to go, i just prefer liquid fuel as high elevation and cold weather can be problematic for compressed gas. My wants/needs are likely different than yours so pick what works for you

I checked out their website and they have a newer model, don't know if it's any sturdier just that it is a newer model. I also saw that they have a portable tankless hot water heater. The new model stove was $37.99, the hot water heater price ranges $129.99 for the base model to $329.99 for the top of the line model.

Mine isn’t duel fuel mine is butane but I absolutely love mine! As far as the case goes ya it’s not a suitcase but mine doesn’t get thrown around but for convenience it’s awesome and mine doesn’t have an issue on low 🤷🏼‍♂️ I bought one and loved it so much I bought three more! Lol ✌🏻🇨🇦

I like it... i think it would be good to keep in the vehicle for car camping and emergency situations. I like the dual fuels.... and as for flimsy..... once its set down it dont matter so really who cares.... to be more solid adds more weight.

Coleman has their own version of this for the same price, but butane only. I like this one as it comes with the propane adapter hose.
