Hi Margaret! Love her honesty with everything! Disability is bloody expensive!! I’d love to drive with hand controls, I have nerve damage from a herniated C6/C7 disc, I carried to much :( and had to wait 9 months for surgery in the UK so permanent now. Xx I have a van we want to build out for the future and loads of good ideas there i absolutely love :) xx

@@EmpoweredPara Brittney, like a lot of your family stuff, this puts a big smile on our faces! When we watched that 11 year old video recently, it makes us marvel at how fast your children have grown. We always want to say that you are so lucky to have a great family and wonderful children, but we know it isn’t luck. We know that you have faced a lot of doubts and uncertainties face on, and have worked hard to make your beautiful life. Congrats Brittney!!

Does Margaret actually camp solo? Even without disabilities it seems a little dangerous for a woman alone. But I'm old and used to living in the U.S.. It's always great to see Margaret and how she uses adaptive strategies to be independent. You both are awesome.

I believe she is with family and friends at the same campgrounds often, but she is definitely in the van solo much of the time camping in her own site!

I’m a wheelchair user and live in my van full-time. I face challenges on three road but it’s totally possible. I document my solo travel on my own KZbin channel, feel free to check it out if you like.

I do a combination of supported and solo trips. I was really anxious about traveling solo, thinking I had to do everything on my own. The things I have learned about myself in the last year traveling in the van is that traveling solo doesn’t mean being alone or doing everything on my own. I learned how the world is generally eager to help when asked. I also reject the idea that travel executed by women and people with disabilities is “inherently unsafe”. When solo I camp or boondock, I ensure someone knows where I am, and I try to travel smart, not draw a ton of attention to myself when setting up for the night. I also like to use a service called Havest Hosts where business along my route offer free over night boon docking, with the expectation that you patronize their business. I lock myself in the van at night. I have a GPS communicator. I also have friends with significant disabilities who truly just set up camp each night wherever they are and they are cautious and don’t put themselves at an unnecessary risk. All this to say…everyone is vulnerable to predators and disasters, and even the most prudent person can have a bad experience. I’m 50 and almost 34 years post SCI. I know there will be a time when I can’t do this stuff anymore.

Depending on where you are from, Sportsmobile will do a van conversion that doesn’t feature RV type mods.

NS refused to let me modify my SUV...no licensed mechanic was allowed to work on any car. They honestly expect you to spend 35 grand on a van and modify it with an EZ tract and spend another 25 grand...not to mention you have to spend 35 grand on a power chair so I said to bite me and moved back to the states (I was only there part of the year anyway). Oh, did I tell you there’s no real programs to help you and they think someone on a limited income is going to be able to do this?
@kwadgirlАй бұрын
I get that many can’t afford this. I am fortunate to be able to do this for sure, and I was on a very fixed income for a very long time after injury. Supports for people with disabilities are lacking in North America (I can’t speak to other jurisdictions). I will defend the point of this and all of Brittney’s videos. Their intent is to educate, show different strategies for living and give the viewer even a pearl of an idea that they can run with and make their own.
