Regardless of who's equipment you're reviewing, I really like your philosophy of encouraging people to start out cheap. I agree that you don't need the most expensive gear to have a great time. I went out last night at the Manistee National Forest. My frying pan was from Goodwill. My ground cover was a free piece of plastic I got when ordering some roofing tin. I had a great time. You Sir, are spot on.

Totally agree with you on budget gear when starting out backpacking. Another advantage to this is that you get to discover what is important to you. Everyone is different, the gear you end up with will reflect this. Also not every trip is the same. The process of discovering what works for you will give you the knowledge to outfit yourself based on the trip.

Something I learned from another channel - On my get-home bag and my bug-in bag and my camping backpack I have changed the zipper toggles to red for where I keep my first aide kit and day-glow green for where I keep my fire starting materials. As a longtime scout leader and backpacker, I would say there is a middle ground. Buy a good but not overly expensive tent so you don’t have miserable nights that scare you away from camping. I’ve seen so many people that buy ultra cheap tents that sometimes don’t make it through the first weekend. Save money on cheap cooking gear and buy a basic esbit style stove to start. Water bottles are free too. Sleeping bags can be cheap but are heavier. Balance your spending without going crazy.

I'm putting together a budget kit also. Most from Amazon, some from Temu. I got a Teton Sports Hiker backpack which I really like. Really transfers the weight to the hips and adjusts to my 6ft2in torso. I bought a cold weather bag from Temu. It's duck down so it weighs 3.5 lbs, but it's really warm. I already had a 2.5 lb duck down summer bag. You don't have to spend a lot of money anymore. Big deal, I carry an extra 5 lbs.

I remember going through old, cheap tent and sleep system that I spent more than 50 nights in, and finding that while it's still totally serviceable, it smells bad and there's no way to get the smell out. Glad I didn't spend a ton on it. Love the titanium spoon and anodized aluminum pots and kettle. Super tough, light and serviceable.

There is a balance to be found Sam. certain things you can go budget on, others I recommend getting gear that is safe especially if you will be exposed to harsh environments, cold, wind rain etc... Proper gear for the environment you will be in. Summer folks camping near home or a state park can experiment with cheap (inexpensive), however, if you are on a river or backpacking deep in the woods or will experience inclement weather you better pray your gear is adequate. Don't cheap out on Shelter, Sleep gear and clothing but that doesn't mean spend a fortune either, find that balance. Also some food for thought... Quality gear can be sold off easily if someone decides that camping isn't for them. And I agree, car camping gear is a lot more affordable, for one you are in a protected environment and probably on a road to bail if there is an issue, so your gear can be a bit on the budget side.

Thanks for saying you don’t have to buy the most expensive gear. I am just beginning camping since retirement and I am 72 and a widow. I bought what I thought was a good Ozark trail tent and made a fire my first as my husband used to grill out for us , we never went camping, and had fun with my dog on the lake and then foolishly posted pictures in a camp group I joined on Facebook. Well one woman took one look at my tent and wrote I should have bought a Gazelle as everyone knows that is the best tent there is and what was I thinking buying a cheap tent and solo camping with it. I was thinking it was what I could afford. Her comments really hurt but I just replied thank you. Maybe she has the money or her husband does but I do not but I don’t want to deny myself the enjoyment of driving somewhere knew. It rained the last night I was there and I packed out in the rain laughing because I slept peacefully and walked long walks three times a day and used the swings at Ft McAllister on the lake and took pictures of the sunset and had tea in the morning in peace. Why can’t people just go back to, if you don’t have anything good to say just be quiet. Sorry for the rant. I enjoyed your video and learned a few things too. Thank you

Some people are just mean or clueless, I encounter this but rarely on my channel. Truth is, if you put yourself out on any social media platform your gonna need a tougher skin. Please don't let the negative comments get you down, concentrate on the positive comments. It's sad but you can get 100 comments 99 good and 1 bad and the negative comment always hits the hardest and if you let it, the negative comment will overshadow the nice comments. FWIW, Constructive criticism is not mean, but how it is said that can be mean. The old saying is true, the squeaky wheel gets the oil, hang in there and let the positive comments over ride the negative ones.

So I whole heartedly agree you don't need to buy the most expensive gear out there to get started. I will say this tho, if you buy what you can afford and even if it's middle of the road gear, you're better off. Plus is you buy better & more expensive gear, if you can, the resale value is more than cheap stuff. But again, as you said, buying cheap stuff works. I have about $2000 worth of gear I take on my yearly hunting trip to the mountains with me, one of the best things is a $1 Ozarks Trail lantern I found on clearance. It goes with me on every trip I make. What lighting do you use for filming at night?

You can buy a affordable tent that "may" leak but even a cheap tarp will save the day. Skip the sleep pad and buy a cheaper sleepmat, wirks just as well. Nylon sleep bag, nylon jacket not pricey down. Latter will be bulkier but decidedly manageable. And plenty of cheap butane: boil your water and ZERO bacteria/virus too. When I first got into bushcraft and camping I thought I needed all the gear and gadgets. Then after realizing how little time I have due to work I’m happy getting out and using a tarp and trash bags for a bed and shelter. Yeah I’ve bought more gear over time but I know I don’t need top dollar equipment. I live in Kansas City so any time I want to camp it’s almost an hour drive and on packed public camping land with designated spots. Even when I drive 3 hours to a conservation it’s all rules and regulations for everything. But a bit more on the wild side if I go hiking

There is a postal law called de minimis that allows companies like Temu to mail anything under $800 directly to individuals the do not pay duty on it. In addition they are considered a “transitional “ country under the UPU agreement so they can mail to the US at a substantial postal discount. I get it that sponsorship is necessary for KZbinrs but I prefer they support countries not picking the US taxpayers pocket. Especially ones that are adversaries on the world stage.
