This might be a slightly strange message; but Thank You both for taking so much time, expense and care to look after the bees! Sadly, these days, many people wouldn't bother, and just "get rid" of them. Keep up the excellent work! 👍😊

Black Mountain Honey - Laurence - he’s the best resource and is in Wales. There is a saying amongst beekeepers … ask 10 beekeepers a question and get 11 answers! I’ve kept bees for years and started my son off last year with his first hive. It’s the best hobby, completely satisfying! And you get honey! Good luck. I have a video about flow hives back in my archive. GOOD LUCK! Don’t be scared of them Emilie!!! Xxx

Yes, his videos are great. Black mountain honey and gwenyn gruffydd are our favourites to watch and learn from and both from Wales 🥰 for me its more a sound/sensory reaction. I actually think if I had noise cancelling headphones on I'd be way less jumpy/reactive 😂 the longer I spent with them the more relaxed I became. Just something completely new for us, so I'm hoping I'll get better with time 🥰

I will never forget my first encounter with hives. Took the courses ,KZbin videos, books etc. I ordered my two nucs. The massive sense of energy I felt when I opened my box. Crazy. Beekeeping has taught me to stay calm and respect the space. They are not predators. They just want to serve the hive . To me it feels like a big responsibility but also a privilege to be a small part of them. You might want to get a mouse guard for the front of the entrance. I've named my hives after the strong women in my life. It's a fun ride !
@CampOutWest
@CampOutWest 3 ай бұрын
You are so right, staying calm is the key. That is what I kept saying on repeat during our course 'i am calm' and it made us realise how little the bees are bothered by us and how focused they are on doing their 'job' 😊

I kept bees before I moved to Hereford. Wonderful hobby. Don't worry too much about the super this year, a nuc will probably only get up to filling the brood box. But for next year you will want an extra hive and some more supers. My biggest ever hive was 7 supers and yielded about 140lb of honey. I hope your bees are as gentle as mine were (see profile pic), I used to sit watching them doing their thing, no suit on, never worried me at all. Enjoy them. One of the most satisfying things you will ever do.

You can definitely move them within the 3ft/3m rule. There are a few things to do. When you put them in the final position. Drape a thick layer of leafy branches over the front of the hive. This way the bees know something is different and they re-orinentate to the new location. The 3ft/3m rule has been debunked now. Research it, you'll have more options then. Hope all goes well with the girls.

I would look into building a top bar hive. You can make these yourself, maybe from off cuts. It is a natural hive rather than buying "production" elements like Langstroth. This may also make the bees less aggressive.

Very interesting episode. I’ve noticed less and less bees and butterflies around, year on year, it’s a bit of a worry. Don’t wish to be a doom monger but my daughter is a surgery Veterinary nurse and she tells me she regularly sees horrendous injury to the mouth and palate on dogs that have a stick across their mouth and run between to vertical objects, ripping their cheeks and removing teeth, or running with or into a stick in the mouth like a cigar, which can stab into their palate. Sorry.

Very inspirational videos you two keep posting, living the life a lot of us dream of! In regard to the bees in the caravan, how about waiting for winter, making them snug as a nuc, then you could move them outside of the caravan near to where they enter with some screening to stop them bothering you as you dismantle? Im sure you can find some other jobs to do......looks like you have plenty 😂 I 'inherited' some rather angry bees a few years ago, went to the give a few times just to check on them, on about the fourth time i fond that all my bees had buzzed off 😢 Good luck in whatever you do, which so far has been fantastic to watch, even though it makes me green with envy 😆 Del farmerwanabee

Very interesting ,my cousin is married to an arborist ( I think that is the right name for a bee keeper) he was once asked by local police to pick up a swarm that was on garden gate. Well he apparently got them in to a container and put it on the back seat of his car and headed off home. Unfortunately somehow they got out so he then carried on driving with a huge number of bees flying freely inside his car . He did survive to the tale but rather him than me. Good luck with it all hope it goes well. Rich W Ely UK 🇬🇧

Well done, it's such a great learning. When moving to Wales from Cambridge in 1985, a neighbour actually gave us a hive full of bee's. The man who gave him a hive years earlier made him promise to pass on the same one day. That happened to be us. I must admit the van (one of 4) it's driver was very nervous all the way.!! But we made it. Is the honey farm near Newquay still open? Also, we enjoyed honey ice-cream on Aberaeron quayside. WCL

I’m so excited for you guys to do bees. I’ve been a beekeeper for 12 years and I love it. It is challenging at times but the one thing I would like to say about your bees in your caravan. Because they’re aggressive they’ll always be aggressive unless you can change the queen and that’s only maybe. But you could advertise or the place that you talk to they might know someone that would come and remove them for you and take them away and then don’t even get them back to start your new hive with the right type of bees that are not aggressive, I’ll be watching you guys, and praying all goes well. You two guys are amazing and we love your dog.
@CampOutWest

Thanks for all that info, that's so helpful. Never thought about changing the queen, but it makes so much sense as they are what sets the mood for the rest of the hive. Thanks for sharing all that with us 😊 we are so excited to expand our knowledge ❤️ Maggie is our dream girl, we feel so lucky that she is our dog
@thechellenator
@thechellenator 3 ай бұрын
Yeah, you can try killing the queen and replacing her with one from a more docile species (or same species but more docile temperament). The hive might not accept her, especially if they've already started developing new queen cells of their own within the hive, but it's worth trying. My understanding is that it's not so much her "setting the tone" as literally changing the genes of the hive as she produces new bees, replacing aggressive bees with chiller ones (passing on her own genetic temperament). Worker bees only live a few weeks, so complete turnover happens more quickly than you might think, and massive change can be wrought in just a short amount of time. :)
@charlesurrea1451
@charlesurrea1451 2 ай бұрын
When I was living in Mexico, all of our hives had become Africanized. The so-called killer bees and made their way up from South America and intermingled with our own making them very aggressive. Didn't make much of a difference to my uncle Jess he went out there in full Veil and regalia with a smoker loaded full of marijuana! Little for the bees little for the keeper! I was absolutely amazed at how well it worked, both on my uncle and the bees. He was as calm as one can get without being flatlined. Which really is the key when working bees. You don't make any sudden movements, banging on the boxes or frames.

I’d be happy to come show you how to set up feeders and shoot with sub 12 ft air rifles. No licence required. Also grey squirrels are not native and destroy red squirrels and the surrounding trees.

@CampOutWest
@CampOutWest 2 ай бұрын
It’s only been 9 days since our last upload and since then we have been away with our full time day jobs for 6 days, shooting weddings all over the UK. The other 3 days since our last upload we have been editing our day job wedding work and we have had 1 day off. The next video will be us fitting our windows and doing our cladding, which is costing us over £3,000, plus we are also doing £2,000 worth of drainage, so to film the next bits we have to go to work to fund the next stages. Our day jobs will always be our priority, as without it we wouldn’t be doing this project or putting out videos. We started a KZbin so we can look back in years to come at this project and everything we’ve done. We also have family and friends that live abroad so this was a great way to keep them updated. We never imagined so many other people would watch but we aren’t doing this project for strangers on the internet, our life doesn’t revolve around filming, this project or KZbin and never will. We aren’t full time KZbinrs, we are normal people that do this alongside our 50+ hour a week full time jobs and we do this project on our days off, when we have the money as everything we film, each video costs us thousands of pounds and you’re so right, we really only film when we can be bothered, as at the end of the day we are just normal people, working full time, trying to do this debt free, with no idea what we are doing most of the time, just learning as we go and sometimes on our days off the last thing we want to do is building or talking to a camera. We film when we have the time and have always uploaded at this speed as it’s realistic. I think people forget we actually have to do the work and just how much time and money each job takes, not forgetting also filming and editing it. This isn’t grand designs where you see a 3 year project completed in one episode, it’s our actual life. We could quit our day jobs, take out a massive loan, hire loads of workers and pump loads of borrowed money at this project just to keeping viewers happy that watch this project for free but that’s not us. You say you like what we are doing BUT you’re not going to watch anymore because we are ‘taking to long’ to fill your needs? I never understand why people that claim to like our project then in the same breath complain that we aren’t uploading fast enough for them to enjoy for free. Our videos document our real life and this speed is our reality.

Thanks so much Ann 😊 it was so nice doing the bee course together and seeing Jon so calm really helped me be able to do it too. For the smoker Roger used recycled cardboard to get the fire started and then added dried wood chip. He also said pine needles and burlap sacks work great too. You can buy sheets which are called wax foundations, which just speeds up the process but without them they would just make it themselves xx

John/Emily- I had fun watching this vid. Em being nervous at the apiary and her body language made me nervous for her but also some laughs (Sorry Em). Ha! A couple things from a highly experienced beekeeper that has a few years under my belt - including flowhives. 1. The 3 foot 3 mile rule is a myth and can be overcome easily. 2. You want your apiary in a spot that receives lots of sun. 3. Those flowhives can be difficult to get the bees to take to. For max success a.) get the bees BOOMING before you add the flowframes/super. Buy a big chunk of beeswax, melt, and coat the heck out of those flowframes before you put in the box. It will 10X your chance of success. Have a blast! I’m in the US, but glad to jump on a ZOOM anytime you may need some advice. Enjoy your journey! -Josh

Actually just saw you paint that hive. For next time - Those hives are wax dipped at the factory and don’t need (actually aren’t supposed to be) painted. It won’t hurt anything - the paint probably won’t stick for long.

Paint those tap caps on the flow frames a bright color. I promise you’ll lose one if you don’t. When you’re in harvest and drop a clear one in the grass they’re hard to find. Ask me how I know. 😂

Thanks so much Josh! I'm going to reply in your comment order 😊 honestly, I was so stressed at the start 😂 roger told me about a time he didn't do his hood up correctly and loads of bees got into his suit, so that's why I was holding the front of my hood at the start, I was worried they would sneak in 😂😂😂 good to know the 3 mile rule is a myth. We are going to clear a few overhanging branches where we have put the hives, which should open the space up a lot 😊 and thanks for the tip about adding the wax to the flow/frames/super , great idea! So kind of you to share all your knowledge. We are so excited to be starting our bee keeping journey
