I hate throwing away green waste and making my own compost would improve the soil in my small garden and any left over I can use around the grounds of local hospice where I volunteer. Fingers crossed!!

Muddy fields are no fun! Great looking drains. Have you considered building berms and swales to make use of any uneven ground? It's a permaculture technique that collects rainwater and reroutes it along channels (or into small stand-alone ponds) that are planted with trees and plants. Check it out, it's a brilliant addition to self-sufficient homesteads!

As a side note, l had a tiny house constructed, on a prepared concrete pad, in 2018. It was built in a single 24 hr period, spanning two half days, and then it rained, so very, very lucky to get it weather tight. Covid began the following Spring, which in turn, unforseen at the time doubled the cost of raw materials such as the wood, plus we are the only people who ever attempted this project, l dont think the location could be tackled again, as logistically it would be virtually impossible for anyone to attempt what was done here. We had very clever people, who overcame impossible odds, one example being the house was delivered two miles away, on a huge 32 tonne flatbed without lifting equipment , so had to be lifted off with a JCB, and then travelled on the forks whilst elevated over several fields. My point being, to attempt this today, would easily double the cost, plus when you add it's uniqueness in location would attract a further premium. It is probably the only building that has quadrupled in price during this short period, and so l am sure you two are also aware that everything you both do, ( in the rain, mostly) is adding value, plus a premium in price too, and though you are not wishing to sell, it still remains a very strong investment, which with hindsight leads to a renewed sense of financial security with all the money you both have invested, without ever mentioning the sheer hard work, which others would have to do, or pay for today if they wished to achieve your same fabulous goal.👍

Bite the bullet, spend the money and get a Kubota tractor, they do 0% interest finance deals and while they're expensive, that thing has already saved me so much money it's not funny. We have 4 acres and it's worth its weight in gold. We have the BX23S which is the version with the bucket on the front, excavator on the back and the 60 inch mower deck underneath. I couldn't recommend it enough.

Thanks for the suggestion. It would be an incredible machine for us but we just can't bring ourselves to buy anything on finance. I (Emilie) have always had a fear of debt or buying things we couldn't afford/or buying on finance - I know it's not a bad thing but from growing up in a very financially unstable home that was deep in debt it just scared me for life 😂 I also have a chronic illness that has cost us a lot of money via private health care and I just have that fear that if it got worse and it effected my ability to work how would I then pay off whatever I had on finance. I just can't bring myself to do it 😂
@margomoore45273 ай бұрын
To add to the above, my father (age 61) “inherited” a used Kubota along with the 22 acres he and Mom planned for a retirement hobby farm. He used it continually, to deepen a stock pond, to spray potassium on his pecan orchard, to move manure, to stack hay, to mow pastures, and much more. It was indestructible, until I noticed, after maybe 15 years, he wasn’t using it. When I asked why, he said it needed a lube job. The previous landowner had thoughtfully left the tractor manual, which listed quite a long list of lubrication products required. I copied them down, and, since Christmas was approaching, called his local hardware store and ordered all that was required. After Dad lubed up his Kubota, it was back in use, and continued until the death of my parents in two successive years just after Dad turned 80. My brother and I included it in the sale of the land, as the new owner would need it. P.S. i’m not saying it went that long without maintenance; I have no idea how often he changed fluids as I was just a yearly visitor.

The 200 litre hot bin would be ideal for my garden. Following a couple of years of personal issues my garden had almost reverted to wilderness. Final straw was when my greenhouse literally blew away in the night - it was found 100 metres away smashed up in a farmers field. After watching your channel and Charles Dowding (no dig method), and the Farmyard Garden, for inspiration, I started again. It was a bit late in the season to be honest, but I’ve set up a couple of raised beds and got another greenhouse. Only got a few things going on at the moment and I’m not sure how many will get over the finishing line in the few weeks left of the growing season, but fingers crossed eh? And if not, there’s always next year!

Brilliant to see the progress as ever. A 200 litre Hotbin would be ideal for my Sister in law as she is offgrid and mid wales, so like yourselves not the greatest of weather all year round.

200 litre hotbin. looks good, the temperatures should kill off pests. its probably a big job to amend your clay soil, might need to speak to some experts.

Fantastic video again today, love seeing the progress you are making, hopefully your home will be completed soon. If I have the option I would go for the 100 lt bin, we also live in a wooded area which is prom to rats the size of a domestic cat, we see them weekly sat on top the the bird feeders which they share with the local squirrels. The birds don’t get a look in anymore🐿️🐀

Thanks for another interesting episode. Those drains look like will do the job well. Beautiful Maggie in the sun would make a lovely photo or postcard. Cheers from Carol in Australia.
