In January of 1985, I went to Grenada for 50 days and left the campus as I got accepted in the several Osteopathic Schools and finally decided to attend the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine because it was the cheapest. I paid like $3000 per year the first year. I am glad that I did not stay at the St. George's University then because I would have been an Internist like many others. Now, I am a plastic surgeon practicing for more than 25-26 years and it is time for me to retire. BUT, nowadays, things are different and graduates from foreign schools are accepted like others from the US and there are no differences. As a matter of the facts, nobody asks you where you graduated from. Back in the 80s, there was a differences in schools and graduates. I don't recognize the school at all. All these buildings are new and our dorm was far away from the school and we had rats crawling up in between the walls of our room. I am sure it is much better now. Good luck to all of you students at the St. George's University School of Medicine.

A very nice detailed feedback! Now the school is loaded with upgrades, including a 2 million dollar state-of-the-art gym. It's top-notch with all this Cybex equipment. I am very impressed by the quality as it outperforms many gyms in the USA.

@@JosiahHenry7 Caribbean schools for US students are for-profit, so super expensive. There are way too many students and too few resources for a good education, just to squeeze out the most money. And it's super hard to match into residency unless you're top of the class because you're classified as an international medical graduate, along with all the other accredited med schools in the world outside the US. It's much easier to be accepted into, but you have to dedicate a lot more to succeed going Carib. And it's almost impossible to get into competitive specialties. US MD/DO students have a much smoother path. Watch Dr. Jubbal's videos on Caribbean med schools if you want more info

I sat through the first week of med school there with my daughter who graduated from SGU 9 years ago. Basic science lectures were good enough for American standards. The faculty was not superb but adequate. Do not expect any Nobel laureates there. The anatomy lab was very poor. It did not provide a physiology lab with life dogs. At UCSF 4 students dissect a cadaver. There a thousand students shared two by looking but not touching. My daughter finished tops and entered SUNY Buffalo for internal medicine where she was ranked as outstanding and went to USC for Hem/Onc. She spent her last 2 years of med school at various U.S. teaching hospitals, typically small community programs. By U.S. law they were all "University-affiliates", but teaching was poor by real university standards. Most of them were residency programs filled by foreign grads or the bottom students from U.S med schools. Clinical teaching, to apply basic science to diagnosis and treatment, helping students to transition to clinicians, was poor in quality and scant in quantity. Knowing their vulnerability those places abused SGU students for scut work, occupying most of the day. While my daughter was being abused as a scut monkey at the Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn Cornell med students rotating through for a respite from high demand clerkships dared to tell the chief, "we are Cornell students and we do not do scut work. If we report to our school no Cornell students would come, and you would lose your "Cornell-affiliated" status. They also received much better clinical attention. My daughter complained about the scut work but no one listened. She had adequate knowledge in the basic sciences but very poor bedside skills. It was obvious as foreign grads from yet other countries in transit or those who could not make it to the US for residency did the bedside teaching, AKA Introduction to Clinical Medicine, at SGU. Beware of the bleak statistics, not as roseate as depicted in a NY Times article. Her year had 600+ students on day 1, another 600+ on day 181, and only 420 sat for graduation, of which 120 were accepted for residencies in the U.S. 20 were lucky and good enough match with university programs. 300 hundred graduated without US residencies to attend but most of them eventually matched in the subsequent years. What happened to the other 800 students who dropped out? Now they have to pay off so much debt. That year the admission GPA was 3.3 and MCAT above average. Think twice before you go. Sit in a med school class at your local med school to get a taste. Could you handle an academic load that is at least 2 times as heavy as undergrad and do well? You might only have enough time to read through all the material detailly once before exams. Are you dedicated enough to give up almost all of your personal life, and study during all your non-classroom time, meaning 24 hours minus class time, bedtime, meals, quickie sex, and toilet/showers, 7 days a week? Are you emotionally mature enough to fight off loneliness, boredom, homesickness, and depression, while maintaining your objective and stay focused? Many SGU students attended parties and drank twice a week as group therapy sessions, and they would make up the 800 who dropped out or failed to graduate. I am grateful for the second chance offered to my daughter who only applied to California med schools with her 3.78 GPA and 80 percentile MCAT, and ended up on the waiting lists at USC and UCLA. Nice that such a backup option was available. She needed much "homeschooling" after obtaining her medical degree. You pay for a Ritz-Carlton but get a Motel 6 is the bottom line. It would serve your needs. The above is an honest and unbiased opinion, but my personal reference for comparison was UCSF med school, USC residency, and M.D. Anderson fellowship. BTW SGU has even a public health program, but the campus had 1 billion house flies all over the place to transmit diseases. That attested to their inability to apply knowledge to real-life problems. The current med school enrollment is 6,183. They probably started off with 2000+ first-year students. Judging from their latest match results I suspected that the dropout rate is now closer to 65%, quite an improvement. If the school is wise they would analyze their data and profile the ones who failed and disclose that data to the public. You should ask how many students they admitted last year and how many were matched last year. I would love to see a reply from SGU.

@@SeanDarmal As a conscientious person, I will always throw grease on other people's dreams if those dream involves a reckless gamble that could land them in $100K+ of debt with no prospect of ever becoming a physician. I'm glad that you're having a good experience at SGU, and I wish you the best, but please keep in mind that the attrition rates and board failure rates there are nightmarishly high. Also, keep in mind that it's an uphill battle for IMGs to match into any competitive specialty; in many cases, IMGs with decent stats still have to apply to 200 FM and IM programs in order to get a few interviews and match. To onlookers: US MD > DO > For-profit offshore schools. As new domestic medical schools continue to open, the prospects for IMGs will be more and more dismal. Only consider the Caribbean as a last resort.

Hey man I'm just wondering how well kept and maintained the campus is (ie whether there are dead bugs everywhere laying for weeks) and how the teaching is. Thanks
@SeanDarmal
@SeanDarmal 5 жыл бұрын
Hey! sorry for letting this comment slip by. campus maintenance is good. they have hard workers, who are super cool, cleaning the dorm rooms, hallways, and study halls, constantly. The only problem would be mud being tracked into the hallways because it can rain consistently sometimes. so the stairs for example can get dirtier faster than they can clean sometimes. very minor problem though. as for how they teach, i feel is just fine. you have to always keep in mind though that learning (no matter what school) always ends up depending on you. Lectures are vital as a starting point to get your footing, but the real learning comes in when you sit there and process the information on your own or with a partner.

hey sorry for not seeing this before. but i have not personally seen a doctor actually save a life before. like in the movies. but ive watched and assisted in many successful surgeries. and i think that is just as important. one day there was this surgeon, he was the best one on the floor. everybody went to him for a second opinion during surgeries. and every time i watched him perform surgeries it looked so effortless for him, but i learned that before every surgery, while the patient and room is being prepped, he sits and prays for a successful surgery. i thought that was a cool story. hope this helps in some way.

What are my chances to match into cardiology if I do attend this university? I’d literally go anywhere to be a physician

Not good, seeing as though you do not match into cardiology. You match into internal medicine and then do a fellowship in cardiology.

yes what my friend, AZ said is correct. You match into IM, then you do a fellowship afterwards. the chances of matching into IM is very very good.
