We don't talk enough about how impactful Lady Gaga's rise was to pop music and culture. She shifted everything. She brought a level of artistry, camp and just pure showmanship to pop music that had been missing for a very long time. 2008/9 was a turning point and it was because of Lady Gaga. Music videos became fun and exciting again, the visual element of the pop star was fun and exciting again; the fashion, the live performances, all of it. Everyone had to step their game up when Gaga came out

The reason why Janet Jackson is underrated is because of the 2004 Superbowl Halftime Show "wardrobe malfunction" scandal. That incident definitely affected her career because all of her music was banned from MTV and radio stations, the albums that she released after that underperformed on the charts, not to mention that her name was removed from the list of performers at the 2004 Grammy Awards (which were held a week after the Superbowl Halftime Show). This backlash as well as the horrible treatment to Britney Spears in the 2000s due to the constant harassment of the press and the tabloids are two of the biggest injustice acts towards women in the entertainment industry.

Honesty, ever since I've gotten into K-pop, I haven't been able to look at Western music videos the same way. It made them look like they put little effort into them. Blackpink, in particular, has always hit the spot for me when it comes to music videos. They go above and beyond for them, and they barely use any greenscreen or CGI. You'll get met with scenes that make you think it does, but only to find out behind the scenes they actually built the sets and went through with the effects. Their song, Playing with Fire, is a good example of this, their sets are built, and in one particular scene; a member is standing on a balcony and the railing sets on fire. For obvious reason you would assume they would use CGI (they do in one scene), but behind the scenes they actually do set it on fire. Despite how unsafe they can be, it does show the effort behind them.

Wow, yessss i’ve been hearing a lot of Kpop fans talk about how much they love the mv. When i go to boba shops and Korean restaurants where I live, they play only kpop videos and eyes are GLUEDDD to the tv. Partially because i haven’t seen many but because they’re entertaining. K pop music videos are still pretty uncreative, just because it's high value doesn't mean it's good. Most of them are just the band dancing in front of a background with random effects thrown in, it's not creative or interesting.

Kpop still utilizes lots of green screen and cgi, even the most popular groups, ie new jeans, itzy, I’ve, nct, etc. Black pink and yg artists are one of a kind in kpop in that aspect

I think it’s very important to note how influential alternative Rock music videos were to even some of the big pop stars during the 80s and 90s especially if we’re talking about Kate Bush, Bjork, and Radiohead they drove the idea of music videos being narrative without huge choreography but instead crazy visuals age wonderful concepts

Michael Jackson & Katy Perry were a few people who made incredible music videos. Gwen Stefani's "cool" was also so beautiful. Excellent points. I'm so glad you highlighted this. Labels should take risks like they used to and artists who have the funds should step it up and invest in making good music videos again that aren't just them flaunting their beauty lol, something with an interesting storyline and that conveys the emotions of the song. I feel like a quality music video makes people listen more.

I’m honestly surprised mv’s haven’t gotten much shorter and geared more towards TikTok. But I feel like people aren’t as interested because artists just aren’t pushing the boundaries anymore (musically or visually). It’s so safe and predictable now with the same tired messages and themes over and over. Idk in recent years it just seems like the industry overall has a lack of passion for the art of music. Making things solely to go viral, what’s trendy, and for a paycheck.

The bar has been set so high by past music artists with their music videos that is impossible for today's artists to stack up to it. Take Michael Jackson for example. He categorized music videos as short films, which they honestly were. Michael's visuals focused on the message of the song, addressed certain lyrics, had intros and outros, dance breaks, spoken parts, and other bits hence why alot of his short films are like 10+ minutes long. Today's artist just make music videos for their songs, not much substance to it, and then its onto the next one. There also isn't alot of music videos I would rewatch from today's artists because of that.

after decades of the music industry existing, it is extremely difficult for these artists to come out with something original, or pay homage while adding their own twists to it and keep people engaged. like there’s really nothing left to do anymore. and if they do, the general public will always say “the og will always be better” they won’t even give it a chance. the last few iconic superstars we truly had were the 2010s main girls: taylor, rihanna, beyonce, ariana, gaga, adele, katy and nicki. after these it’s kinda fallen, and so has their creativity. their music videos used to have BUDGETS. CONCEPTS, VISUALS. but after doing this for so long ones ideas can run so dry. i don’t blame them for their lack of creativity honestly, it is extremely difficult to be innovative now. and trying to add shock value is over too, look as lil nas x’s recent video… he thought he’d have people engaged by adding religious aspects but instead it did even worse. there’s nothing to see anymore, music videos aren’t interesting, people just wanna have pretty visuals or just do whatever… like ariana’s music video to yes and was pretty good, but as u said, it’s been done before. it was NOTHING like some of her best like God is a woman, no tears left to cry, break free, thank u next. you could feel the budget and see the concepts in those. and i believe the rise of streaming also has something to do with killing youtube, just like it did with killing pure sales. ik for me personally, during youtube’s golden era i was still in elementary/middle school so my only source of listening to music was by youtube, so id have to play the music videos. and this is the case for a lot of latin countries or third world countries who don’t have the luxuries to pay for spotify or apple music, they use youtube, which is why a lot of hispanic artists are still thriving on youtube, karol g’s doing amazing on there and one of her videos that’s less than a year old is about to hit 1 BILLION, that’s unheard of nowadays…. hispanic artists are doing pretty well on youtube as they always have. there’s truly a lot that goes into the death of youtube and music videos, but i really hope something happens because i believe that music videos are an important aspect of what it means to be an iconic super star, those videos showcase what they’re made of, and shows their creativity. something that these new artists and even older artists are lacking.

Especially as of recents with her last album “emails i can’t send” she’s slowly been becoming more known but it’s a shame her music videos didn’t get traction when they released. I think ppl are less invested in music videos than some, like you, like me even. I grew up with Britney, and I remember not being able to wait until her videos came out. Granted, I'm older now (in my 40s), but I keep up. From my view, it's streaming that's the big hurdle for these musicians. And - you nailed it, the drams ppl like to hear about, ie: Ariana Grande's messy divorce, etc. Now the thing is ppl judge her off her personal life and don't want to see the video, ya know?

Yeah, I think people care so much more about peoples personal lives versus their art. People don’t really separate the art from the artist anymore like before. And that might be a good thing when it comes to artist who legitimately not good people, but it definitely means people aren’t gonna tune in to things like he’s a videos, etc.

one of the things i wish you had talked about was that the majority of gen z no longer sits down to consume music. most people i know primarily listen to their playlists during class or work while accomplishing a task they don't wanna do in order to find some level or entertainment or enjoyment in misirable waste of time busy work. every day, they wake up, get dressed, pop in their air pods, turn on their playlist, and listen to what is basically a backing track of their favorite songs for 6,7, 8 hours at a time until they go home and turn on KZbin or go on tik tok. and i know this because this is something i do as well. this is also how a lot of people just consume media now, usually listening to KZbin videos while multitasking on shopping, on artwork, on cleaning or writing or whatever. even in the case of real tv shows, most people watch real tv when they eat, so its still not like an isolated activity. gen x would sit down to mtv to watch the launch of the new MJ video, millennials would sit down to watch the newest taylor swift video. gen z? we listen to an entire album during US history because we don't wanna be their and need some way to find joy in a Miserabel waste of our time. essentially, anything we can listen to has sort of just become background noise so we dont have to hear the silence around us.

I agree Normani’s Wild Side is the best music video of the decade. The choreography 🔥, the outfits, the stunts (her sliding on the floor), the creativity (her pulling her reflection out of the mirror to dance with herself). It’s just perfection. It’s a moment. And it adds so much to the song like you mentioned! That video ser the bar so high for me for music videos. It still has not been surpassed. In my opinion. (In terms of recent music videos)

In terms of artists in the past year who have been doing really well with choreo and visuals, I agree that Victoria Monet has been serving with choreography. So has Tyla, I've seen. Tate McRae's recent videos have been great, specifically exes, the choreo and camera shots are so addictive and it pays tribute to Britney and Xtina in a cool way. Troye Sivans music videos aren't VERY choreo focused but I find the visuals are really well done too. I could probably think of more this is just off the top of my head.

Modern artists and labels are not being aware of the potential of music videos :/ I remember that a good way to know if a song was a hit was if the video surpassed 500M views in 1 month or less. Now, I can only know by checking how many streams the song has on Spotify and sometimes, Spotify shows the song has more than 1B streams while the music video barely surpassed 500M (which is a lot, I know, but that music video would have more than 1B as of today!!). I remember Look What You Made Me Do by Taylor Swift was a music video that I really paid close attention to its view count and I remember clearly how it just naturally went up to 1B, something that I completely expected because the song was a big hit. Now, big hits like that song rarely surpass 500M and *NONE* of them (LITERALLY NONE) reach 1B.

@@phillinsogood i use filmora (so this May be a bit different depending on what you use) , basically you take the part of the video you want to green screen and copy & paste it on top it. So you will layer the videos. Then, I select the AI portrait feature (this may be different in a different editing software) and it cuts out the top layer. Lastly, I lay an image underneath the cut out image. It’s kinda hard to explain 😭but that’s the general concept

Some of my favorite music videos have been Psycho and Body Better by Maisie Peters!!!! Psycho is about a girl who finds out her boyfriend is cheating and connects with all of his exes and they all take turns doing small things for revenge. There is a whole lot more than that, but I want to encourage you to check out the video. Body Better by Maisie Peters is also a great music video, as the visuals are fantastic and match the feral feminine energy of the song.

When the most familiar format of music videos were first produced in the late 70s, often used as promotional material sent to record companies before becoming the mass popular and cultural phenomenon they became with MTV, music videos were unique in that they were the only short-form video entertainment being produced. Now, that carried on right through to the advent of KZbin and TikTok. Now, however, this sort of short-form video is being used for all sorts of entertainment purposes, and being used to great effect by their creators to capture the eyes of the viewing public. I think music videos might be suffering a fall-off in viewership for the simple fact that people have more to watch, more selection, more variety, when it comes to their 3, 4, and 5-minute video fix.

I haven't read any comment on it but I think it also has a lot to do with accesibility to music! Of course during the 90s purchasing physical media was expensive and during the 2010s streaming platforms (i.e. apple music / spotify, etc) were not that popular yet! so music videos were both an entertaining but most important accesible way to consume music since if it was on tv or youtube, you did not have to purchase the song or the album, people will always gravitate towards the cheapest way to consume

i’d say Melanie Martinez is extremely underrated and her creative power with her music videos is insane. she made an entire MOVIE that was released to theaters for her album in 2019. the Crybaby album tells a story across all of its music videos, which continued through K-12 and now in PORTALS. she spends so much time working on her music videos and the visuals are stunning. it’s so impressive and the storytelling is beautiful. extremely underrated and very talented artist.

Having grown up in the 80s and 90s, and I was discussing it with my brother 2 days ago, the music video was a promotional tool with immense reach...besides, each release of a Michael Jackson music video was an event worldwide and even in France, Thriller was broadcast on the 2nd national channel in Prime Time on a Saturday, I was only 4 years old but I still remember it. The music video was a phenomenal support for the life of a single and music videos even helped the success of the single. I'm thinking in particular of Happy by Pharrell Williams, which was released a few months before on the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack, but the music video made it a success . I think that the music video no longer has its place today because it can no longer be used as a promotional tool in the Tik Tok era and the reduced attention span of the audience. We realize this when we see that a title broadcast today rarely lasts more than 3 minutes and is limited to the chorus/verse/chorus format, which leaves little room for the scriptural creativity that a music video can require (intro etc…). This is the world today and I think we just have to look into the past and treat our eyes and ears to what was the golden age of music video. Excellent analysis on your part and I agree that the last good video clip released was that of Normani, which actually made me want to download the title.

Honestly I’m sad 😞 I have so much music 🎶 to create and put out there and to think that people won’t even care to listen to it for 3 minutes is sad. I wish I could go back in time when people actually had limited media and the fans were crazy over new releases. I’m glad to know the information so that I can catch the young kids attention with short vids, that hopefully draw them in to watch the full version. To me there is a joy of watching something for 3 to 5 minutes. This short form I don’t like it in fact I hate it. It only makes everything dull. I'm surprised didn't mention Music Choice. If you guys didn't know, MC were channels on cable that either had audios of music (like a radio station) or had a demand channel with music videos. Before KZbin, I had Music Choice. It was mainly between 2009-11 for me; lady gaga, rihanna, nicki minaj, drake, britney spears, katy perry, etc. of course some of it were censored because it was cable. Most u.s mvs in the 90s-2010s had storylines/lore/hidden meaning/Easter eggs/ a lot ‘to be continued’ mv with multiple parts. Alot of beautiful videos like Kwabs- ruins, FUN - We are Young, any rnb mv. A lot of these things have influenced K-pop (legends) ie Omarion-Ice box compared to Big Bangs Taeyang -I’ll be there, nicki Minaj-Annaconda to Hyuna- Red, even this y2k revisited era taking kpop by storm is influenced by a certain time in the western world ie Clueless, Mean girls, Gossip Girl fashion. But I feel like a lot of things have led up to this such as: the decline of club culture esp in the 2010s, short form platforms, less investment in art, songwriters and artists not being respected or paid for their work, industry not investing in talented people or Jordin Sparks, and the market targeting younger and younger people.

i think doja cat, specifically this era, is bringing back a lot of game changing creativity in terms of music videos. such as agora hills, paint the town red and demons. pitchfork themselves praised her for keeping the "art of the iconic music video" alive, and called her "one of the form's few remaining practitioners. I think that’s why PTR was so HUGE because it was such a shock to a lot of people but also added to the song. I also think tyler, creator and billie have continually gave very visually appealing music videos that go along with this opinion too. You can tell there artists who actually put real thought into it. i think olivia rodrigo’s good 4 u and bad idea right? are examples interesting modern music videos with a narrative that we so much lack now as well, and i genuinely hope she continues in that direction. i love when artists have an entire aesthetic to their persona or album cycle. hers is very much Y2K teen chick flick. also megan with cobra… i love seeing such artist growth that’s definitely going down in MV history for this decade. it’s really sad to me how the medium isn’t taken as seriously anymore. when you see HUGE artists like Nicki Minaj use AI to promote her album instead of any sort of visuals it irks me.

Something I think about a lot is how much music videos played a role in how much I tuned into genres that I don’t naturally listen to. The charts in the 2000s and 2010s were truly all over the place genre wise! Now everything is curated to what the algorithm thinks your music taste in, which has its benefits for sure.
