As someone who has listened to Taylor Swift’s music since around 2010, I don’t think Midnights should have won. It didn’t introduce anything new to her music, nor was the writing amazing, nor did the album have a flow or story. I think it’s one of her least deserving albums to win. When I found out she won, I was disappointed but not really surprised. It really seems like the people voting for the Grammys just prefer her and that’s it. It is perplexing.
@CamrynSuzanne8 ай бұрын
And it’s funny bc i did focus on that win but I actually really like Taylor’s stuff when she first came out! And that’s my issue, it’s not one her top projects subjectively to a lot of listeners . So it becomes tricky because of her project is wanting and it’s not even her best work, and there’s another artist that has their best work and they don’t get it… it’s like what do they have to do???!
@suoutubez198 ай бұрын
@@CamrynSuzanneThat’s my issue too tbh, I started listening to her heavily when Debut came out (I was 12, so it’s been … a while). Midnights was subpar compared to everything else she’s put out, and I was genuinely surprised to see people saying the opposite. She’s capable of producing great work but midnights wasn’t that.
@Molly-iw1rc8 ай бұрын
I feel the same as someone who generally enjoys Taylor's albums. Folklore winning was great, it was one of the most well deserved album wins to me because she did something a little different and put a lot of work into it and the album felt like a complete project. Midnights as an album is not her best work. I liked some songs, but as an album it wasn't that different or experimental. The stuff in that album that could be considered experimental for Taylor is stuff alternative artists have been doing amazingly for years. I feel bad for other nominees because there were really good albums in those nominations that I felt deserved praise. I get that it's "the era of Taylor" right now, but I think they did the other artists dirty this year for sure. Low-key I feel the same about last year's win.
@robertprice48268 ай бұрын
A lot of people felt Fearless didn't deserve it or 1989, because of I Am...Sasha Fierce and Kendrick Lamar. But I also state and Said everytime a black artist wins, their album is not explicit or cultural impact mostly jazz music, etc. Ray Charles, HERBIE HANCOCK AND Jon batista. Most underperformed and didn't capture the youth.. But they win because it was a safe album for white folks.. It wasn't unlike 1998 The two albums that were both groundbreaking and cultural impacting the industry and artists was Ray of Light by Madonna and the miseducation of Lauryn Hill back then competition was valid and every album even if nominated did something for the culture, it's rare an album does cultural stuff cos of the state of the industry and the gatekeeping.

I think the biggest snubs that night were sza for aoty and Lana for once again leaving with zero Grammys. Both are amazing artists who deserved their recognition. Sza had one of the best sophomore albums released in a long while. SOS was talked about for an entire year even after its release. It dominated the charts. As a woc, I just felt so seen by her album. The relatability and honesty she expressed through her songs was just too good. As jay z said it, some people don’t deserve the awards they are given. Lana, on the other hand, continues to get treated as if she hasn’t contributed nothing to the industry. She paved waves for the newer generation of artists like Billie and Olivia, and even they have more Grammys than Lana. I think this is why I don’t take them seriously, some of the greatest don’t have Grammys themselves yet they have left a major impact in the music scene. The one that sort of surprised me was Olivia not getting any wins. I for sure thought she would get SOTY or pop vocal album simply because she did well her second album. Then again, the competition was very tight this year. I don’t think she was necessarily snubbed due to being against some big names plus people already see her as a household name and her album got so many recognition/praise. She is still so new so she has time to turn it around and get more wins for future projects. Thanks for saying things people are afraid of saying!! You made some valid points. Black woman are primarily always the ones getting snubbed and I’m sick of it!!

The versatility, her experimentation, her ability to reach out to different people in audiences and connect. Is a superpower that I think she has a lot of artist just don’t! Also, I’m super surprised about Olivia as well, she had some amazing hits this year and I really really loved vampire. I think she should’ve won something for that. Like you said she has time though and I see more, Grammy wins for her and her future. Also, thank you for validating me, and bringing up the race conversation! Because I knew people weren’t gonna like it, and I know I’m gonna get a lot of flack in the comments, but I’m not here to pander to people and be liked. I’m here to have an honest conversation and things won’t change until we have honest conversations.

thank you for giving mariah the credit and praise that she deserves! in our contemporary age, many people write her off as "overrated" or only regards her as someone who sings christmas songs, but mariah has been in the business for over 30 years and she has made a huge impact on music, pop divas, and pop + rap collaborations. she is more than just a glamorous star: she is a songwriter, producer, and a talented vocalist. even before their snubbing on the emancipation of mimi, in 1996, mariah lost AOTY with daydream, and it had many hits, including "one sweet day" with boyz ii men that was number one for 14 weeks...

I’ve been so annoyed by the discourse I’ve seen especially from swifties during these conversations because I just can’t understand how people can’t understand the desire of artists to receive the accolades, acknowledgement, respect, and appreciation, you deserve in your respected field? If we have advanced so far as a society past all the biases and systematic under handing, then why is it asking too much to expect that artists like Mariah, Beyoncé, SZA, etc. get their flowers? It truly doesn’t make sense that the current and upcoming generation of artists are still having to overcome the same obstacles and hurdles that artists in the 80s had to? I’m not going to cut Taylor down because I respect the hell out of the battles she’s had to fight throughout her career as a woman. All I want is for artists that are just as deserving to be able to share the stage too. I keep hearing ppl say that Beyoncé doesn’t write her own music and that’s why, if AOTY was awarded based on songwriting merit then Beyoncé wouldn’t be nominated in the category in the first place….cut the bull 🙄 It isn’t arrogant or selfish to want to receive an award. We don’t do this to any other artists besides black women…time and time again ppl can’t stand on business. It’s disappointing to constantly have to be humble and hold your head high and act like you don’t care, while you see your peers relishing in their accomplishments.
@CamrynSuzanne8 ай бұрын
Right! Like they will defend Taylor to the death. Especially when they feel like she’s not getting what she deserves, and they’re very vocal about it. But the second someone advocates her speaks up for another artist, or in this case a black artist…. We’re not supposed to have an opinion? So they don’t deserve it? Two things can’t be true at once? Like it’s all subjective and it’s all opinions but it just feels so dismissive. All We’re doing is advocating for artist that we appreciate and feel like deserve it. Period!
@JustMeBieth8 ай бұрын
I don't think there's absolutely any issue with an artist wanting the respect and recognition they deserve. As I have said before, Beyonce was snubbed for Lemonade. THAT should have been her AOTY win and it would have been more than well-deserved. Now this last release, I didn't see the argument for her winning. However, if it were up to me personally, these awards would never take color of the artist into the equation (whether white or black) from the very beginning and should have based it on both quality and performance. Performance included because quality is merely subjective and no one would ever agree on whose work was best. Performance is objective and could show whose art generated the most success/recognition aka was liked the by the most. Those are the only conceivable ways I could see it going down fairly? Unless someone has a better suggestion. With that said, I don't believe in consolation Grammys. Like, we're gonna give you this one because you're overdue, or were snubbed, or because you're a minority, or because this or that. Give it for the work itself and the work alone. IMO.

As a fan of The Weeknd, I hate how when he is mentioned in articles, they always start with the three time grammy winning artist. I'm over here annoyed because after the huge After Hours snub, he stopped submitting to the academy and it's annoying to keep calling him the three time grammy winning artist while knowing he should have gotten more. Also After Hours was such a great album in terms of pacing, vocals, etc.

Also I am glad you mentioned double standards because I am seeing a lot of that on BOTH sides too. For instance, people argue Beyonce isn't overrated because people say all the time "she's overrated", while in the same breath saying Taylor IS overrated when a lot of people say the exact same about Taylor and constantly call her "mediocre" and hate on her as well. That's a huge double standard. They both work just as hard and meticulously as the other in their careers and for their art and if you follow both closely you would know that. Then you never hear people complain about vocal performance wins as they do AOTY and reference quality when Celine/Mariah/Whitney don't constantly snag those vocal categories as they supposedly should if it's up to quality ( they're the best vocalists in the industry). People fail to realize it is an academy of people who vote for these awards and every person likely uses their own selfish reasoning. Some likely vote for who was most popular, some for who they liked the best, some for who was best critically received etc. It's never the best quality album of that year winning as it would likely go to some obscure artist every year and the show would lose ratings, just like the vocal categories don't go to the best techincal singers every year or that would be a boring watch. I suspect most people who complain about Taylor winning so much just don't like her music or vibe with her, because if Beyonce had won 4 AOTY people would be complaining it wasn't enough. 😂

People don’t know how political the voting is. Block voting is supposed to be “against the rules” but it’s long established that Nashville is a sizeable voting block who will push anybody holding a guitar, as well as the Classical/Jazz contingent of the academy who went to fine art schools who will push one of their own i.e. Samara Joy, Esperanza Spalding, Jon Batiste. Regardless, both those blocks usually side with songs written on live instruments without too many samples or too many writers which has never favoured hiphop, R&B or electronic music. That’s why ‘1989’ and ‘Midnights’ winning AOTY always shocked me.

@@CamrynSuzanne I was gonna comment that if Beyoncé wants to win AOTY, she’s gonna have to cater to these blocks by doing some sort of acoustic album, very high on lyrical substance, with production accessible enough not to alienate anyone. @gretaleinart48137 ай бұрын
100% done with the grammys and was never once on board. I think in the case of SOS vs Midnights, and why judges gravitate towards Taylor generally though, has A LOT to do with songwriting by the vocalist. I write music myself and was always a little frustrated by the industry giving resources to those already at the top, like damn these musicians have everyone writing their songs for them but for me to rise I gotta be a full writer, vocalist, mixer, and find a producer with my limited resources, and will probably get much less far. That dynamic and skillset is something the judges probably account for significantly. At this point, I'm using descriptive language rather than morally weighing in, this is the industry we're looking at to be a creator and be recognized as a creator. So when we are faced with two albums who are culturally impactful (nonetheless in very different ways) with millions of streams each, we head to head among the panel. They are both high quality production, have a strong theme, and have incredible vocal talent. They both play with genres and tone and nonmusic sounds in inventive and beautiful ways. Kill Bill, Low, F2F, Snooze, Smoking on my Ex Pack, Ghost in th Machine, Special, Good Days, Gone Girl, and Far are some highlights for raw, vulnerable, fun and dynamic pieces ranging genres and influence of alternative rock, blues, R&B, pop, and reggae. SOS killed it and is such a comfort listen I needed that personally makes up the majority of my listening hours on Spotify since it was released. We uncover insecurities and toxic experiences and hurt and beauty. I feel like I'm looking out at the ocean with the sun on my face breathing after all the shit I've experienced has been sung out poetically, peacefully, and passionately, and have just acknowledegd or released emotions or my thoughts webbed like a ball of yarn in my mind. On the other hand, Midnights also ranges genres (that haven't been ulitized by Taylor before Midnights) and invokes a lot of nostalgia from pop culture - bejeweled is the prime here, taking a 'video' game of the 2000s and creating a song with the sound of gems (personal note: my synesthesia is pleased). It also got at a lullaby nostalgia with Sweet Nothing, and pulls on 80s-90s influence. We hear that synthetic pop, alt rock, electronica, and R&B influence and genres throughout. Maroon, The Great War, and Lavender Haze really point to the 80s-90s influence/instruments. Would've Could've Should've, Anti Hero, You're Losing Me, and You're On Your Own Kid are stunning and introspective and get at confronting inner demons. We also got two massive music videos and are in the Eras boom, and Karma has been a long time coming and made the tracklist. The theme and sound are consistent: from Lavender Haze to Glitch to Hits Different, we know the tone of the album and the songwriting is strong, especially when we hit bridges. Personally, I believe Folklore, Reputation, and Midnights are Grammy worthy runners of the 10 we have, and I believe SOS, Z, and Ctrl and Grammy worthy runners of the 3. These two albums are pretty neck to neck for what they brought to the table and music industry, for the range of creative exploration within an album that still maintains a strong conceptual feel, exhibits growth of the artist in their own life, and reflects shared human experiences and thoughts of a wide range of people that go unaddressed too often but influence our daily lives. We are looking at sound+content+cultural moment vs a different sound+content+cultural moment. So when the panel and minds that be at the Grammys weigh this, they (believe they) have to turn to other factors to consider beyond the "Album of the Year" ideal- the credit or direct credit to the award winner/face behind the album (SZA vs Swift in this case). Now 100% black women and nonwhite women are robbed, held back, are not given credit for rising this far in an industry that disadvantaged them at every damn step of the way to the point they have gone, already within a society that disadvantaged them from entering the music industry. Judges don't look through this lens to consider artistic excellence or quality and what work is deserving of award recognition. They are more likely to consider a more "direct" or recent lens to consider artistic excellence, the most prominent example, the number of writers of the album. I think this is why Taylor may be additionally favored over and over when her work is compared to the other front runner works. Most songs on SOS were written by SZA and 3-5 other writers. Most songs on Midnights were written by Taylor and 1 other writer. The same can be said for other prime examples of robbed winners, Beyonce, who definitely should've won for Lemonade at the bare minimum, and Lamar who has been robbed repeatedly. The top songs and albums by these particular artists who we agree should have won album of the year over the Grammy selected winners, are 9/10 times written by 3-8 additional people to the artist themselves. Judges see this, and weigh talent, artistic excellence, through the idea that these artists did not achieve excellence without more additional "help" or hands on the project, and deem these artists as less deserving of an artistic excellence and quality by division of the labor to the end product. When head to head, this hidden factor is probably the reason Taylor gets a leg up on these artists who are being contrasted. All to say, Album of the Year is not congruent with Album of the Year, but with Album of the Year divided by the number of creators, to pick the person most worthy of receiving the award, not the album most worthy of receiving the award. That all being said, SOS should've won, despite Midnights being in my top 2 favorite albums by Taylor of all 10. SOS is a masterpeice and was robbed the title it most deserved. The Grammys are flawed and always have been, I never root for my favs to win because they won't, so I just don't pay attention or give any power to the awards that always get it wrong. Take away the power of th Grammys, I pretend they don't exist and vote with my listens rather than by tuning in to an arbitrary panel of judges who pick winners rooted in wrong and supremacist cultural standards. I love Midnights, I connect and relate and will always listen and the sounds tickle my synesthesia. I love SOS, it might be my favorite album...ever? My 21st Century Blues (RAYE) is the competition, give it a listen! Been writing my own Ice Cream Man all along until I heard the song and went damn finally found someone else saying what I've been hoping to release myself someday, and it feels less urgent to get out there (diff title obv, same ideas and approach though). Also if we can get Attack of the Attacking Things (Jean Grae) on Spotify via petition I will be forever greatful, that album is in my heart, up there with SOS and 21st and the album never got the recognition I felt it deserved. Excellent video, I also really loved Alexander Avila's video on the cultural and societal issues of Swift mania and the privilege that brought her to this level of success while other artists, nonwhite artists, are not given the recognition or praise they deserve for their craft and content, I recommend giving that a watch too! Take care and love yourself and listen to the music you enjoy!

As a major swiftie. I’m happy for Taylor to win a 4th AOTY and make history. However midnights was not the album that deserved to do that. Especially not in such a stacked year. Her very previous AOTY album did something special. Fearless brought country to a new younger female audience. 1989 was a hugely influential album with its 80s synthy influence. Folklore captured the feeling of the start of the pandemic’s isolation. What did midnights do? Its a safe album for her that will be more remembered for the associated tour rather than the music. I’m happy for SZA’s 3 Grammies this year, but she deserved more. She provided such a breadth of an experience with SOS alongside that gorgeous tour. The Grammies have lost some of that prestige in my eyes because of this, but SOS will always be my winner 🏆

I gave up on the Grammys the second time they played in Beyonce's face and gave her album of the year award to someone else. I think it was Adele that year. Lemonade was a cultural phenomenon, how did that lose? Plus, the show was painfully boring that year. I decided that they are not getting 3 hours from me for this nonsense again. I know the artists care and want the awards, so I'm happy for them if they win. But, I don't care anymore. There are so many ridiculously talented folks with mega hits who never got a Grammy. The Ojays immediately come to mind.

As a big Taylor swift fan I was rooting for SZA hard and I my heart sank a little when she didn’t win. I know Taylor had a massive year having the biggest tour of all time, but MIDnights was only a small part of that. All of my friends wanted SZA to win, SOS had the hits, the commercial and critical acclaim, it just seemed unfair. It truly felt like they were awarding Taylor for being the people’s princess and not for creating the best album. And as a big Taylor fan, I will say this was probably the first time in a long time she didn’t expect to win, comparing her pop vocal album speech to the AOTY you can see the first being a feigned surprised and she even announced a damn album. Her speech for AOTY was very unrefined and unrehearsed which leads me to think she didn’t think she deserved to win, I really wish she would’ve acknowledged SZA. I’m not mad, just disappointed. And obviously I don’t blame Taylor, this is an issue with the academy, I will not scapegoat her like many are, but I will hold firm in that SZA truly deserved to win.

hi!! i really appreciated this video! probably the most put together honest conversation about this and i learned a lot from it. i started watching the grammys in 2021 and every year i try to be more objective about the categories and decide for myself (more for fun but also bc i love music & am trying to be more broad with my taste). i thought this years' aoty nominees were the best in my opinion and i knew it would be heavily competitive but it was CLEARLY between taylor and sza. i've been a swiftie for years and so i do have a little bias, in my opinion, i think midnights is one of her best works and she deserved it, but to look at the history of the award is very telling and you did such a good job at explaining that. i was kinda shocked sza didn't take roty / soty for kill bill, i had her HIGH for those. i think you made such a good point about how we value the grammys bc this happens every year, everyone gets online and fights about it then we watch it again and root for our faves, i'm guilty of that too so it's a double edge sword. also the part about columbia backing h*rry instead of beyonce was shocking bc she 100% deserved that award last year and i'm still pressed ab it bc hh was not aoty material imo. overall, i really appreciate your videos! it definietly gives me a different perspective to think about & encourgaes healthy conversation, rather than pointless fighting on the internet!

I've been really enjoying your commentary on pop culture, specifically music. In a social media world lacking critical thought and full of empty thought processes, you're a breath of fresh air. With that said, my ultimate take on this issue and awards in the arts in general, is that we cannot be surprised that our faves do or don't win bc the process is going to be subjective by nature, regardless of the current voting process.The only way for it to be close to objective is to establish specific guidelines in how the artist must create their music in order to submit. For example, when you have runners in a race you know EXACTLY who the winners and runner ups are. Bc it's clear as to HOW to win. Essentially that is what needs to be done for awards in the arts (in this case music). BUT that will be at the expense of true art. Bc art is subjective and once u add rules and points then it becomes less about the art and more about fulfilling a checklist. It doesn't make sense in all honesty to hear ppl complain so and so doesn't have this award or this amount of awards when it's too open of a process. I mean those who vote for a Grammy don't even have to specialize in that category! And how does it make sense to pin artists in one group for album of the year. It's like putting Frida Khalo, Diego, Picasso and Claude Monet in a category for best painting. There should be more honest categories like "sales", "technique", "creativity", "streams", "global impact", "style", "most popular " and so on. Bc I will say this, I personally don't think Beyonce should be the most awarded and I don't think Taylor should have a single best album. Also, the artists being nominated and awarded are only the ones who submit. There are much better works IMO that deserve recognition and awards. But again this is the conundrum of art, it's its subjectivity.

I think the grammys should devide the album of the year into two awards kinda like they do with song and record of the year. One for most successful and record breaking album which would've gone to Midnights and one for the most creative, artistic and career defining album which would've gone to S.O.S. or to There's An Ocean Under Tunnel Boulevard. They should also add an award to influential albums, albums that weren't very successful or never won an award that have become some of the most influential albums of the current music scene. Here albums like Born To Die and Lemonade could win an award for being the inspiration behind many of the albums that get nominated each year. Because to me it genuinely makes no sense how Lana has never won a single Grammy award, yet Folklore which is an album that clearly mimics Lana's sound wins album of the year.

I'm a fan of Taylor and I thought that this year there was a better contender in every category than her. My personal AOTY was GUTS, but I was also rooting for SOS since many people wanted it to win and there must be a reason. I'll have to listen to it. The problem is the voters don’t seem to be as diverse as the nominees they award. I don’t think popularity and sales determines the winner, but it’s easier for voters to vote for the most popular artist and album that they know of or are a fan of rather then expanding their tastes to new artists, listening to all of the albums nominated, and having their own favorites.
@hawkwing88408 ай бұрын
I’ve always said that the Grammy’s should add an “Artist or Musician of the Year Award” as one of the big categories so that they’re able to distribute the wins better… I mean- they add new categories almost every year; many other award shows have it and it’s a great way to differentiate the idea that just because they where the most popular, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they had the best body of work. Because if you ask who was the biggest artist of 2023? Taylor Swift, but who had the best album of 2023? SZA. And I never understood why they can have categories like “Best New Artist”, “Best Producer”, etc; but not best overall artist or musician. 🙃

Being a taylor fan myself, i absolutely don’t think midnights deserved. It’s a solid record but something like SOS was much stronger conceptually. One think about platforms like twitter etc, is that when something like this happens, people instantly go to attacking the artist who won instead of criticising the actual voters/people who gave the award. I understand the instinct to bully the winner, but i do feel like this doesn’t actually influence any sort of change, rather just attacking another individual who had zero control over the award. I remember a similar thing happened with alessia cara when she won for best new artist over SZA etc. The amount of hate she got was absolutely insane, all for something she had no say in.
@Asterisk948 ай бұрын
I would be willing to bet that the reason Taylor won is because the people in the academy voting for “quality” music probably ended up splitting the votes between SZA, Lana, olivia and boygenius, which left all those who vote by name recognition or who have the most middle of the road taste to pick Taylor

You covered this so well and considered this topic from so many different angles. I believe the only truly revolutionary act is to reject these white institutions altogether, don’t acknowledge, don’t show up, don’t submit your music. Artists should be clear about what is they want from their art and if that’s recognition, understand the Grammy’s are not the sole place they can attain that.
@CamrynSuzanne8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment!! Yeah I think that could be a very valid solution and I agree that’s probably the most effective route. I just think people have put so much merit on it that people would like the recording academy to chng from within. Such as diversifying the committee more, breaking down the politics. But again, that probably won’t happen so easily 😭
