I think its a pop genre issue. Madonna is the only one allowed to still play on the pool past her 20s. We seem to want to retire the girls after marriage, motherhood, and getting older than 30.

On the topic of what sound will kids look back as the 2020's sounds, as a producer I have given it a thought and seem to be driven by the technology and tools at hand that shape the sound of an era or decade. In the 90's to 2000's Dre, mj, dila, 50 cents that era they made music by sampling old records and using drum machines like mpc's and Scott storch on the keys and synthesizes that defined the early hip hop, rnb and dance sound. On the rock and band side traditional instruments like drums, guitar, a carry over from the 70's and 80's were being pushed to new heights by people like Linkin park, Paramore , pink etc creating that indie sound. Around 2003-2008 we had Kanye, Pharrell (neptunes) , timbaland who heavily used the korg Triton synthesizer and still drum machine which created that sound of that decade. Now previously recording was done on tape but early 2000's all the way it's shifted to CD and programming through computers which made old recordings techniques redundant. With computers we had virtual synths and instruments inside computers and this had a major shift in sound. From 2008 -2016 maybe even 2017 we got the edm dance wave of music. The likes of taio cruze hangover, black eyed piece, David guetta, some Brittney spears song etc were all programmed on computers unlike the old way by virtual instruments like massive, nexus, sylenth, serum to name a few. About 2013 that og hip hop sound was missing so a virtual implimentation of this was what we have as the trap sound by modifying old drum machine sounds like the 808 kick to the 808 bass we hear in modern music and Melodies crafted by syhts like nexus. This is where producers in beat battles like metro boomin, wonder girl and others came from to my knowledge. Also digital audio Workstations (DAWS) became popular and accessible giving rise to the controversy of Computer "pc" music. People who received backlash were the likes of skrillex for winning a Grammy doing pc music and chainsmokers. The new generation of rappers unlike 2pac, jay z, Eminem and snoop wasn't about spitting barz or matters affecting the (black) community but more about flashy, degenerate behaviour and mumble rap like 21 savage, Lil pump etc. Pop music 2016-2017, 18 kind off took a twist, still very edm influenced it stared to fuse the dance '' put your hand in the air'', bubbly sound with carribean, dancehall, afro swing and reggae sound like the likes of caio addios Anne Marie, one dance drake, rockabye, locked away, I ain't your mama by jlo etc. Also a fusion with rnb, soul, ballads and trap created a more dark, moody almost in your feels depressed sound. We got Khalid, billie eilish (no wonder they collabed) post Malone and other big pop artist switching to this sound. About 2019 to date we (producers) got new toys. Emulations of vintage synthesizes (SYNTHS) like the prophet, Juno from the 70's and 80's which weren't accessible to many and expensive were now Softwares in your computer like the arturia stuff and roland cloud. This lead to a resurgence in the sythwave (stranger things score) and disco pop the likes of dua Lipa and the weekend. Also key changes in songs once a cliche are making a comeback like Sabrina carpenter please please and bts dynamite and different time signature like 3/4 elley duhe middle of the night, 5/4 Leigh-Anne stealing love and a willow Smith song I can't remember. To sum it up, it is often overlooked that producers plus the artist inherently shape "the sound" of an era. Producers present a sound crafted by the tools at hand creating a certain vibe which the artists catch. if lack thereof of a certain sound, it sound fresh and new to the listener, they want more of it, producers copy each other to supply for the demand and then it all gets old in a second especially in this short attention span era. Also almost all pop music is made by the same people. At it's state it's kind of a monopoly overseen by record labels. Most of the music ( pop in this case) is produced or written by max martin, Andrew watt, Louis bell, I'll Angelo, frank dukes, Ian Kirkpatrick , Stargate, cirut, iilya to name a few and work always with your favorite pop artists and labels push for this hence lack of experimentation and a "defining sound" which comes through experimenting and taking chances with new artist and producers. No hate to any of them. In fact they shaped me in a way and they have evolved their sound over time creating trends but we can't do the same thing and expect a different result. It's always a fresh take and perspective from their side and not others. If you want authenticity and true expression in music, then listen to small upcoming artist doing their thing. Popular music isn't that Artists in malicious contracts with labels are being told what to do and wears to promote Armani or whoever it for next week's whatever it is and keep rebranding the persona and image until IT is accepted.Emphasis on IT as this is the product they have for you to consume. Not art to appreciate. That there is the compromise but it's is what it is 😂. Great video as always 🤡.

I never got this countries obsession with hyper youth. It’s like now especially with social media people think their life is just their teens and 20s and that’s it. It’s like when you get to a certain age you’re not allowed to have fun anymore or be creative. Like bruh.. it seems like our youth is the prime of the body. But our old age is the prime of the mind..

Everyone was by Katy's side this time around, no one was going to let her flop this harsh! However, things changed when she decided to prank us all with *Dr.Luke* as the producer of her lead single. Trust me, had she left him out of the picture and brought us this silly song, she would've still done better than what she's doing now.

I think the answer is pretty simple. Social media. Remember the saying "if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all"? Think about how many negative things you say about anything during the day. Just pay attention. One example I have ( and I have many) is Katy Perry. Nobody needs to know she worked with doctor Luke. If someone likes that song, let them like it. Who cares nobody cares what you think. It is not your job to educate anyone about anything unless you are a paid educator. If someone wants to know who produced what they can investigate themselves and make their own opinion. They may not give a shit and probably don't unless someone tells them they should and then they feel some sort of way about it. Like what YOU like, don't like what YOU don't like and call it a day. Suck it up buttercup it's time to think for yourself.

I feel like Katy Perry and Rihanna's career as a pop star is somehow started the same. They are both hit giants with millions sales records and numerous number ones. What's different is along the way, Rihanna seems to matured musically and as a person then finally finding her sound during her last couple albums (more so after 'Rated R'). While Katy was like continuing what's 'Teenage Dreams' build for her sound and stays there. 'Witness' is not a bad album at all, and 'Smile' is honestly descent. So seeing her going back to Dr. Puke is disappointing af.

I think Tyla has every right to decline to answer the question and it’s not uncommon for PR agents to interject if a question needs to be skipped, it’s just usually cut. But they should have already formulated a response for Tyla to make to the question bc it’s brought so much controversy. So when she’s in this situation we doesn’t have to have her manager to get involved. She can give a short response to end the discussion but still respond to their question.

Janet Jackson just sold out at the O2 in London and they had to add another date in. I think she's fine. Shakira's killing it. Kylie Minogue is still doing the thing. Björk's still at it. It might be that pop culture (especially in America) is ageist. It's also the fact that the music industry and how you make money has changed tremendously over the past 20 years.

Maybe the visual aesthetic is the most out of date part about the music video. People know how to style Katy and what to expect from a Katy style, but much of WW looks like it was made for someone else and she just stepped in last minute, it doesnt just look kind of lewd, which wouldn't be that weird for her, but does it in a way that doesn't feel related to anything for fans or casuals, that doesnt feel purposeful or like it even requires her.

I did clubs in the 90's and 00's. Im 40 now, and what you'll experience is a lose in interest about hang out continusly as you grow up. And that's just fine. You need to know, that the shame of not been worth it, just because you dont hang out, is an illusion. You are not left behind. Things change as you get older, and that urgency just goes away. As a society we expose at that judgement since the dawn of clubbing (it was the same when there was no cellphones). Today is just as it was, and it will be the same forever. Have FUN, and move on with your life. Be yourself, and you'll be ok. And if you ask me, yes I did had THE TIME OF MY LIFE. 🥂

0:41 the record labels don’t give them the budget for it. Plus “ reality” is more popular now because of the accessibility and proximity the everyday person has to a celeb. For me, I’m a millennial. Artists like Toni Braxton are TOO media trained. She’s not relatable and she is so stiff in her interviews if comes off extremely inauthentic.

I think Katy Perry has good bops. Her discography is crazy good, and her last album was in 2020. I think if she dropped singles after her last album in 2020 to now, people wouldn’t be saying that she should hang up. Her new single is giving very much 2016 and showing how out of touch Katy is with how much pop music has changed. Edit: Jennifer Lopez is a better actress than a singer.

Artists who passed their prime days NEED TO BE THEMSELVES. Look at Adele. She is a great example. Katy Perry is amazing but this women just slapped some “social media” dialect and trendy concepts and think it will hit target young audience. It just feels like a giant joke. It’s very common w other artists who have also passed their prime and are just releasing lowkey nonsense. Songs that don’t sound like they are pouring their creativity and heart into anymore. It’s worse when they keep getting praised just cuz they were iconic in the 2010s but in fact are releasing songs that just don’t feel worth the listen.

Dope vid - entertaining, super insightful and informative 👌🏾 Definitely could've been that bit more thorough because while the blatant ageism in this conversation is acknowledged, the inherent sexism, I feel, is somewhat, if not totally, skipped over. Sure, Eminem is mentioned a few times, and for whatever reason, his album is doing great (good for him) despite it sounding redundant and banal. The mere idea of reviving/killing 'Slim Shady' from the early 2000s speaks volumes and he's cashing it on it this lack of inspiration/originality, while some/most of the women mentioned in this video are being targeted, vilified and crucified online, and told to hang it up for pretty much the SAME thing. It doesn't make sense! 👀🤷🏾‍♂️

With alot of pop stars It’s like they Refuse to evolve or grow as artists. It’s like they’re frozen in time trying to do the same schtik from 10 years ago. But there are some music acts like Charlie xcx that are able to keep growing and evolving like an artist should and they’re able to captivate a new audience. Or people like Taylor’s Swift who still go on strong.
