Here's a suggestion to Engine Masters. Test four pattern cams vs. traditional cams. Two cams that are essentially the same, but one with the new four pattern setup. Run both cams in a single plane Brodix setup, but with both carb and EFI. So basically the following. Run 1: Dual pattern cam with carb on a Brodix single plane manifold. Run 2: Dual pattern cam with MPI on the same type of Brodix single plane manifold. Run 3: Four pattern cam with carb on the Brodix SP. Run 4: Four pattern cam with MPI on the Brodix SP. Those Brodix manifolds have bosses that makes it possible to drill and tap for injectors. Would be great to see a test showing whether or not there's something to gain from both carb and MPI ATB

In old engines two cylinders, side-by-side on one bank fire 90 degrees apart at the back of the engine where the cooling is not so good. Newer firing orders moves these cylinders to the front for better cooling. Cylinder to cylinder AFR is also something that should be talked more about.

I know this is an old video......but.......I have a carburetor / hot rod shop and I do a lot of street & bracket style engines. Since the 80's from time to time I'd get a Chevy engine both small & big that had damage to #7 piston, rings or bearings....and sometimes a bent rod. No other cylinder was damaged eliminating a tuning issue in general. In every case the customer had his plug wire wires tied together or at best, 5 & 7 touching or crossed over each other. I only saw this with very high output ignition systems and fairly high compression. If the #5 & #7 crossfire, you're firing #7 45 degrees early. A recipe for damage. Back then I was working for a Speed Shop and could call any perf mfg and get in the back door at will. I had long talks with a Comp Cams & a Crane rep. Both told me the only reason for the 4 - 7 swap was to avoid the internal engine damage. The Comp Cams guy said Reher Morrison & Sheppard came up with this idea and once somebody else saw it, it became common. I've used 4 - 7 swap cams using the identical grind in a freshen up at the customers request and never was there an ET or MPH change we could attribute to the swap. In all of them, the engine had a very slight difference in the idle sound and less noticeable with open headers.

Today, Caterpillar 3508's still follow the old SBC firing order. Ford used to use both the 4-7 and 2-3 swaps on their Modular V8's, but recently got rid of the 2-3 swap. Now, their 5.0 Coyote, 5.2 Predator, and 7.3 Godzilla engines follow the 4-7 swap, which is, interestingly, the same firing order as the old Flathead V8's. The 6.7 Powerstrokes use both swaps. And finally, the L5P Duramax follows only the 4-7 swap. And to top it off, some MTU V8 engines do a 5-8 swap which is almost unheard of in the car world.

Well at least he didn't sight the old 5-7 pair. I'd agree that would make sense on a front throttlebody efi engine where having a 90 degree pair near the throttle body could help feed the trailing cylinder. But for a manifold with induction in the center you just move the 90degree pair to 4-2 or 3-1 and it all has similar proximity to the air source. I guess it can be an interaction over multiple cylinders but I've never seen a decisive analysis.

Also 5 and 7 are fighting each other for air/fuel mixture.. does create a heat difference firing side by side.. slightly. Thanks for the water crossover, helps 7 or be (Not so good) if not for that. kermets i've heard the same thing, even in older engines. swapping the 4 7 still leaves 2 cylinders paired in the block and the firing order, changing 5/7 pair for the 2/4 pair, but, the 2/4 pair is closer to the coolant inlet from the radiator and thus receives cooler coolant. as a result the 2/4 pair run cooler than the 5/7 pair and you experience less detonation. thanks, Brett

Practically anything. Look up Richard Holdener on KZbin and Sloppy Mechanics on facebook (Richard has also contributed quite a bit to the sloppy group, and has also been on Engine Masters several times) for lots of ideas. The 4.Great pretty much responds favorably to anything that increases airflow (cam and headers are), before you get around to doing anything with the heads. Mind you, this is just me following along, and not my own experience, so do your research.

What kstricl said. In a couple recent videos Richard recommended a decent cam, valve springs and possibly shaving the head for more compression was worth about 100hp for the little 4.8.
