Thanks Kam! I've actually done alpha product testing in the past for different companies after they've seen my reviews haha, so some of them surprisingly do want my insights in that way. It's interesting because I've been doing product reviews for 6 years now, but it's only now that I've started to create my own custom projects that I'm feeling more interested in how products and design decisions are made. Who knows what the future will bring, I've always thought it'd be interesting to work with an existing company to develop something new.

@camshand2 ай бұрын
I don't have both so can't compare them, but for blade work I can't imagine it to vary a lot. If you only need blade features then save the money and buy a Cricut. The main benefit of this machine is the modular expansion into Lazercutting and Inkjet 👍

@camshandАй бұрын
It's not a competition and everyone starts somewhere! I've been making videos for 5 years so don't be discouraged. I'd say focus on the aspects that make you, your projects or viewpoint unique. Then you don't have to think of content creation as a competition, and instead what you can help people with.

Great video, thank you ! I’m just getting my M1 Ultra, could I trick it to cut acrylic, by using a white/clear acrylic but put a blue/green masking tape on top ?
@camshandАй бұрын
Not really, once the light passes through the tape it'll then be hitting white pigment and being reflected. Tape and sprays can be used as a good trick to engrave on materials that usually wouldn't, like clear. But that's only because the heat absorbed in vaporizing the tape or paint is transferred to the top surface of the clear material. You can look up spray on laser etching spray to experiment a bit , have fun!👍

Appreciate the feedback, I love making my custom projects and sharing them with you. I think I understand what you're saying, where the videos are more about the project and the product is supporting it. Given the original M1 has been instrumental in my past projects, I thought a deeper dive into the M1 Ultra would be valuable. My hope is that viewers would find my insights helpful whilst making the multiple custom projects in this video. Since my videos have been mostly product reviews for many years, the pivot to making custom projects is something new and exciting. But I'll always be interested in reviewing new and innovative technology that I'm excited about like this modular system.

Yeah the included bolts seem to be too short. As I showed I could get them to bite but it was only a turn or so of thread going into the unit, so I opted for longer bolts to reduce any chance of them stripping the thread under load. Glad you were able to at least get all of yours to bite the thread 👍

RE: Leather fibres on edges at 9:00, as a hobbyist leathercrafter. Typically my cuts by hand with an Xacto knife would not have this issue, nor would cut-outs with a punch, as you're cutting through the entire piece thickness in one clean pass. For circles, you're better off with an appropriately-sized punch. For your longer cuts, you're probably best off trimming them off carefully by hand. You might also be able to carefully singe them away with a lighter. Edges are usually finished one way or another. This looks better and seals the edge. After the cut, you would sand them with a few grits and either burnish (veg tan only - slicking them with water, gum tragacanth or preferably Tokinole and rubbing with wood until smooth) or use an edge paint (sand the edge flat, apply a layer or edge paint, sand, repeat).
@camshand3 ай бұрын
appreciate the insights Jack! I did wonder if I should try less passes and more pressure, but at the same time I didn't want to go too hard and cut the cutting mat (if that's even possible). The final circle that's shown did cut through it all, but reviewing the footage further, when the blade turns around the head moves back a bit, so it may very well be starting at almost same spot each time, meaning those fibers are being pushed back and forth a little bit on each cut. I'll have to look into burnishing, I've seen that in videos but didn't know that was the name of the process. But always up for learning something new and an experiment. Lighter to singe stray fibers is a good tip too!

Great machine, im intrigued if you could cut out mouse grips with it and how that process looks ive always wondered.
@camshand3 ай бұрын
With the new blade types it can cut pretty much any soft material under 2.5mm thickness. So yeah adhesive mouse grips and slides would work if you were able to buy a sheet. I'm planning to cut some custom dimension screen protectors and fan grills soon, of course these things can be done by hand but it's hard to beat the precision of a machine like this

Awesome and informative video! Always enjoyable to watch. By the way, what is the model of your microscope? Thanks :)
@camshand2 ай бұрын
Made a short about it, it's the BeaverLABs M2A. kzbin.infoKXHN2LCpgGE?feature=share Main negative I have with it is there's no manual exposure of the camera, so for reflective materials the image feed can be blown out. You can reduce the LED brightness, but the camera then automatically adjusts exposure again. It's still very useful, but my ideal digital microscope would have manual camera exposure controls.

You mentioned "You only need to learn one piece of software", i just have concerns about support down the line. If xtool just up and stops existing what then? I've just been burned by way too many things just not working because the company either ended support or stopped existing.
@camshand3 ай бұрын
That's a very fair concern, one which I had when I first backed the original M1 on Kickstarter. I then realised that xTool is a division of Makeblock, which is a STEAM education provider for schools that's been around for over a decade. I actually ran classes using their laserbox pro back when I worked at the Uni. So I know there's an extra level of commitment there in providing support, but I understand what you're saying it doesn't guarantee a lifetime. But I don't think anything like this can, there's no open source software suite that can handle laser, blade and inkjet. Maybe there could be a way they could open up the controller board to take grbl commands, so you could continue use of a laser. But just like the xTool P2 can work with lightburn, it lacks features you get directly in their software like 3D mesh mapping curved surfaces and multiple inbuilt cameras. On the flip side, I'm not sure if their blade competitor Cricut supports 3rd party control either. As makers I think we have this mindset simply because we break things to fix them haha. And so naturally have that question about our maker tools. That being said you can use the M1 Ultra via USB, and so if firmware updates stopped and software support ended at a certain version, you should be able to operate it offline using the local xcs features.

@@camshand I know that they could engineer this thing so that it is comparable to any high end laser printer in quality and the number of pages that can be printed. Would such a machine be expensive?..(absolutely) But I and many others would be willing to spend the $$$$ for such a machine.

@kunalmule19073 ай бұрын
does it cut acrylic also?
@camshand3 ай бұрын
Yeah mate, 3:50 I cover acrylic abilities. Being a blue diode laser, solid colours that are opposite of blue are best, so yellow orange and red. You can do others but it's an experiment depending on how well the blue light is absorbed, causing the material to vaporize instead of melt. Black is perfect, probably should have said that in the video, but white usually doesn't cut clean if at all. Clear will never work on this type of machine, for that you need a C02 machine with an invisible far infrared beam. If you want to be able to cut all types of acrylic I suggest you checkout my video on the xTool P2 👉 kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqiknpWpf5pmp7ssi=4UTvDuxpBuzHK0vt
