That sounds like such a horrible idea with airbags and all 😂
@BEdmonson85Ай бұрын
@@iso_2013 Well, considering there's also an airbag in the a-pillar (you can see it @1:09 just to the right of his left hand - it has a barcode sticker on it) , I'm not sure just how much better of an idea this is... 😬 I had to route the wiring for my dashcam very carefully when I was installing it in my car because of the same airbag location.
@iso_2013Ай бұрын
@@BEdmonson85 that's an excellent point, I didn't think of that
@camshandАй бұрын
@@BEdmonson85 to my knowledge the only side airbags are in the seat. Which is why I haven't been able to swap to low profile racing seats in my '07 350z. Which sucks as I'm tall as for the stock ones haha (in Aus you can't remove airbag functionality). The A-Pillar trim seems to just cover metal, and even if there was a airbag my clip on mount is on the pillar so if it somehow was to be pushed off, the mount would just go with it.
@TheFallenAngel13524Ай бұрын
@@camshand It's a curtain air bag in the headliner. The bar code is on an anchor strap that clips into the A pillar. It'll blow straight down/out to cover the window shoving the headliner/weather strip down and popping the top of the A pillar cover out. So basically if an impact doesn't send the watch flying the airbag deploying probably will. lol
@chax0208Ай бұрын
FYI: if you activate dev options (same way you do on any android device) you can select keep awake when charging, so if you managed to actively cool it while charging (maybe with a peltier element) this could work
@mert2x982Ай бұрын
Peltier modules are horribly inefficient for cooling, just add a small heatsink or attach a fan to it. No need to go overkill for cooling.
@iso_2013Ай бұрын
The only problem I see with a heatsink would be that when the car isn't being used but is parked in direct sunlight, the air temperature inside would increase to the point that it probably wouldn't be able to cool well. Although, I'm not sure it needs to be charging when the car isn't in use.
@yourfriendlyneighborhoodjinxАй бұрын
@@mert2x982 they're inefficient sure, but the cooling for the size is unmatched. The car should be able to provide plenty power for such a small part and a heatsink would only be effective for a little while, not really after it's been cooking half the day. Not to mention there's really not a lot of a pillar. Maybe if the AC was vented to the back though, or mounting over a vent like some cars do.
@filcukАй бұрын
@yourfriendlyneighborhoodjinx I peltier needs it's own heatsink, so this makes no sense. They're more commonly used in applications where the heatsink sits outside of the device, like a mini fridge.
@nvirevolution2235Ай бұрын
Peltier devices are trash. Require moving heat away from them while also not providing much in cooling. A simple pasted on heatsink with a 40mm fan would be a much better option over a peltier.

PETG is going to warp, too. Inside the car gets a lot hotter than outside the car. I made a license plate frame from PLA and it sagged in no time. Made one from PETG and it took a little bit longer to sag, but still sagged. The ABS one I made after that has been fine for a while. I also made an iPhone mount that goes in front of the centre cubby above the stock stereo location. The PLA one warped and the phone would no longer fit. Ditto for a PETG one. The ABS one has been fine for a while.

The easiest way of capturing complex contours is to use something like wire and shape it around the object. A tape line can be helpful to keep the wire coplanar. Any wire that hooks its shape works, I've even used solder in the past
@XyphurrАй бұрын
2:50 ASA is actually a fairly good material in place of ABS nowadays. Similar thermal characteristics, UV resistant, doesn't stink as bad or put off nearly as much noxious fumes, and Bambu Lab put out a pretty nice Carbon Fiber ASA that has a pretty nice finish on it. (Even though I know that was a pretty good place to plug PCBway)
@camshandАй бұрын
Interesting you mention ASA, my understanding of why ABS isn't good for your health is the S is Styrene. the S in ASA is also Styrene. Although it may not smell as bad, the VOC's being released are still toxic and should be treated with care. It's probably because I come from a background working at a University where safety was a priority so we had proper ventilation. So at home, I'm not willing to risk my long term health by rolling the dice without adequate ventilation. In general though, ASA solves a lot of pain points of ABS when 3D printing. I'm planning to add ducted fume extraction for my laser cutters, and hopefully can add the enclosed X1C into the pipes.
@XyphurrАй бұрын
@@camshand Fair point. I suppose since I've kinda been learning as I go, I've kinda missed that bit. I also trusted the integrated carbon filter to catch most of the VOC's, but know it's not a silver bullet. Also coming from previously owning an Anet A8 (an open-air cartesian printer known for catching on fire if you didn't upgrade some critical bits) I never got to play with some of the styrene-based materials, so I'm less experienced with handling it. I also did some cursory research before working with ASA, since I kinda was concerned regarding the VOCs, and _allegedly_ it puts off less fumes compared to ABS, but I'm not certain if that means less styrene in general. I aughta look and see if someone in a lab setting actually did some tests on that. I'd love to have an X1E that has the better filter and heated build chamber. That, and I'd love to get into higher education around some of this stuff. 3D printing has a lot of potential.
@camshandАй бұрын
I do wonder if 10 years down the track there'll be a "3D printing" epidemic from people inhaling fumes they weren't aware of. It's the same in the laser cutting community, I see so many posts on facebook of people cutting PVC based materials, which creates chlorine gas when laser cut. Seems the issue lies in all materials have risk in some way, we kind of assume with consumer access it must be safe. I too would like to know some comparisons between VOC's or filament types and other common products.

Something you could consider is using a Raspberry Pi Pico, and an OLED circular display. You might have to get familiar with code, or have someone help you with it, but I'm certain there are tools out there that would let you take that google maps data such as the turn indicator, and display it on the raspberry pi. A smart watch is most definitely NOT the first thing that came to mind when you mentioned a circular display. It was the second or third though. Still, I don't think a watch would be the right tool to use here.

I think the Sunton 2424S012 would be a great fit. Tiny little circular LCD with an ESP32-C3 on-board (which also solves the connectivity question). It's not OLED but these things are pretty cheap and it might be sufficient. Getting data out of Google Maps into the board is the second question. I think my approach would be to look at Gadgetbridge which (iirc) supports sending navigation data to smartwatches - maybe it'd be possible to implement one of the protocols. The bangle.js one looks pretty simple though it will require re-implementing nordic's uart service.

You could point your air-con vent at the watch to keep it cool during charging. If you want to go down the rabbit hole, you could internally vent some air from the air-con duct up into the pillar to the back of the watch. Also, an alternative to ABS is ASA. Prints similarly to ABS but has better UV stability.

Also, they make transreflective displays too, which work way better in cars. Good idea!

Sadly the current iteration is just aluminium pieces bent and riveted together with a wireless charger installed on the front of it. One day I'll even finish running the wire to a power source... On the navigation side I'm still using my 10 (?) year old HUD made by Navdy. The company went bust long ago but thankfully a couple of guys with programming knowledge are able to keep the app alive.

Two things, there's ESP32 powered units that are essentially a smartwatch that you can program yourself for what you want them to do, no battery, round display, could be made to run off a car. Secondly, I don't understand why google doesn't give more two tiered directions, like waze sometimes, and even google sometimes, gives your direction in bold on top with the next direction slightly greyed out and smaller underneath, and it's very useful for the scenario you mentioned, but it just doesn't do it often enough.

Anyways, I think this was a good concept, limitations really being the hardware. I would say, you're better of just using Google's feature on the phone showing the upcoming turns while the head unit shows the map. Before going full custom, maybe finding an older smaller phone to use and dedicated solely for the car could work as well, plus the arrows would be more visible.

could you use an M5Stack Dial? I use one as a CNC pendent, and it works well. Might be a better fit compared to the watch

There is a device that looks like what you want to do with this project that is ment for motorcycles, just adapt your bracket to hold it instead. It is called the beeline moto, 2 has charge while in use support.

It’s a great idea! I bet someone will run with it and make a device!

I was thinking about an app that uses directions api and pulls location from a phone and displays it on an OLED screen mounted in ur car. I'll see if i get time ill do it. I remember most of the coding stuff as the last project i made using google maps api was 2 months ago

You have small little pucks with an arrow like that for bicycles that don't dim with it's bright and probably have way better battery life.

I attempted a similar project with an arduino and LED display, but the roadblock was there's no way to get the turn-by-turn information out of Google Maps on the phone, there's no API or official support for this kind of accessory. Using a smart watch is such a straight forward solution to the problem, I wish I'd thought of it! Removing the battery and powering it directly definitely seems like the next step.

You should check on the specs and deduct 10c from them. PETG withstands more like 75c and ABS is quite soft at 95c. If you pull off abs from hotplate which is 95c then you can bend it easily.
