Target shooting is one of my favorite things to do.
Once in awhile you get a hair-brained idea like shooting 1 Mile.
I decided to set up a steel 100% IPSC at 1 Mile and see if I could hit it with my .308 Winchester.
I've hit 1,000 yards in a PRS competition before, so I knew I was at least capable of that.
However, 1 Mile is a different ballgame.
The bullet goes subsonic at this distance, and that causes some problems with the ballistics.
My biggest challenge was just seeing where the bullet was even impacting!
I ended up with about 29 mils of elevation with about 26 dialed and another 3ish holdover. That was all my scope could take.
But at the end of the day, I hit my target at 1 mile!

While you dont "need" a heavier round to shoot, a heavier round tends to have more sectional density and surface area which improves its ballistic coefficient.

If he would’ve switched to just the 178 eld M’s it would’ve saved him a mil of drop and a little over a half mil of windage assuming similar cartridge pressure and a 10 mph wind. His barrel twist is his limiting factor but had he been able to use Berger 200.20X bullets on a 1/9 twist or so and loaded again at similar pressures he would’ve saved over 2 mils in elevation and almost 1.5 mils in windage. You’ve still got to read the wind but that’s a pretty significant advantage. The 155’s are hardly ideal even for bullets he could be shooting from his gun for this purpose.

That was sweeeet. I too use a Rem. 700 varmiter in .308W, bone stock. They always said my 168's would fall apart at 800yds. but I never had a chance to shoot that far anyway so I didn't care about that, I was after that bughole instead. Can't wait to get her out longer range...I'll be swapping to the 155's and working up a load there. Just subbed here, will be following you and the 'Rebel 308'.

Inspiration made for the masses. Now just think what a well tuned hand load would do for you or even a factory match load offering would accomplish. And 800fps 150 grain like that will actually do a lot of damage if you think about hand gun loads and that speed with projectiles that can have far less weight.
@Michael-fs8km
@Michael-fs8km Жыл бұрын
Yeah, 1 mile is a little stretch for the old .308, but you got'r whooped my friend..... 155gr is a little light to be reaching out that far, but you made it work. You might find a little heavier bullet won't be so 'all over the place'. It might be a little more accurate. With your twist rate, you might see a difference going up to a 175gr Sierra Match King bullet. If memory serves me correct, I don't think you have the twist to go much heavier than that. You'd just have to research it. The only thing we use factory munitions for here, is to fire-form brass. After that, it's all handloads.
@trevorkolmatycki4042
@trevorkolmatycki4042 2 жыл бұрын
A 1:10 twist 24" barrel would help. Then you could get better stabilization with the higher bc bullets... I think your barrel twist rate is better suited for shooting within the supersonic range. I suspect this is the main factor affecting the result.

He said it was hornady. 155 grain traveling at like 2900 FPS at the muzzle. 800 somthing at the target so the bullet was passing thru the sound barrier and that usually does some Funny stuff to the ballistics of the projectile..

Nice shot! How many mils or MOA did it take to dial up to that distance, and what was the velocity when it got there? It may be helpful to set out a wind flag at the target, and a wind flag behind you, to get an idea of wind hold. I’d look into the heavier 208gr ELDs with a G1 of 0.690 for ELR distances
@reeseontherange
@reeseontherange 3 жыл бұрын
I had 26 mils dialed (max of my scope) and held over about another 3 mils. Calculator says the velocity at that distance was 866, so it was pretty slow. I definitely could have used a wind flag! Can't believe I didn't think of it, thanks! I did see the mirage switching directions which I alluded to at one point in the video but didn't talk much about. I've switched to lighter bullets because they're much flatter with the higher velocity, especially for PRS. I know it's counter to what a lot of others do. For example, what I'm shooting says I need about 27.5 mils of elevation for 1760. If I were to shoot a 200gr ELD-X at 2470fps, I would need 32.1 mils. Granted, the velocity is still 925 vs my 866, so it's retaining its momentum better overall.
@ramsaycountry1177
@ramsaycountry1177 3 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, the real advantage heavy bullets give you isn't in elevation drop it's in wind drift. I shoot 185gr berger juggernauts in my 308 with great results. I've hit a 4"x6" steel plate at 1000 yards in a match this year with it.
@reeseontherange
@reeseontherange 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good shot. It comes down to energy. How can it get as much energy as possible and keep it? I used to shoot 168s (non ELD), and they fell apart after 800. Just for comparison, I punched in the 200 ELDs and added a 10mph side wind. At 1000, the 155s were 0.1 mil favorable from the right, and the 200s were 0.05 mil favorable from the left. So that seems like a wash. The 155s still had a 100 fps advantage over the 200s, but the 200s had about a 75 ft lb advantage in energy. The 155s had an elevation of 7.7 vs 10.8 on the 200s. I know there's a bunch I don't know yet about it all, so this is all a learning process for me. I'm definitely not as confident in the energy performance for hunting purposes, but for shooting steel, I've been really impressed.
@BurnDuration
@BurnDuration 3 жыл бұрын
Reese on the Range, are you shooting the 155 gr Lapua Scenars? I generally don’t chase after a flat trajectory as long as I’ve got a good waterline and I’ve got enough elevation in the scope and rangefinder with me. For PRS, the matches I’ve attended they give you the ranges in the COF description of the stage. I had a similar experience with 168gr SMKs falling apart at 900 yards. When they went subsonic, they were nearly impossible to control. while it’s indeed possible to make hits on steel or paper at 1 mile with the .308, by mixing and matching bullet weights/design, powder type/charge weight, barrel length/twist rate, and so on, in the the end, the controllability drops through the floor. For 1000 yards there are several great combinations the F-class folks load to in FTR however they are using 30” heavy palma bartleins in a fast twist. I love the 308 and it certainly has its uses. An unbraked 308 is a flyweight 16” carbine setup is great at improving a shooters’ positional skills for PRS practice sessions, as it pushes the shooter around more and forces the shooter to develop solid fundamentals. Then, before a PRS match, transitioning to something like a 19 lb rig in 6 creed would make for a strong competitor. Keep shooting, and great channel!
@reeseontherange
@reeseontherange 3 жыл бұрын
@@BurnDuration No, the 155 gr Hornady ELD-M bullets. I had one match where they had targets out to 1125, and my 168s weren't cutting it. In fact, I could hit 800 pretty solid, then I had a lot of trouble beyond that which they had a lot of targets for at that particular match. So I switched to the 155s for the next match, and the only stage there with a 1000 yd target I went 3/3 on which was the first time I had even hit 1k in competition. lol, I don't like the idea of trying to tote around a 30" heavy palma bartlein. I did do some testing that helped narrow down this cartridge, and I'd be curious about whether that same testing method would work for a variety of different bullets...which a lot of people already do anyway. Thanks! And thanks for the insights!

That bullet is much too light and not nearly high enough BC IMO. It's going transonic so soon that it is probably affecting accuracy past 1100, 1200 at most. With a 1-10 I would be looking much heavier - 168 ELD, 178, even 195.

Nice shooting. I’m gonna forward this video to my younger brother. His passion is absurd long range shooting. His rifle is a Weatherby Vangard Badlands chambered in something larger than .30-06. (I don’t remember exactly, but it’s new to me.). His scope is a Caballa’s brand - about 1/3 the size of yours. I’m surprised it took 30+/- shots to hit the target with all your gear - especially your scope. Additionally..., I’m surprised you placed your target on the crest of the hill. For all your missed shots over the top I hope there was a another unseen hill right behind the first. Otherwise I’d have placed my target below the hill top so no bullets would fly over the top and kill some ranchers cow - or maybe the rancher. Remember..., we all need to be responsible shooters. Good luck.
