If only I had found this video years ago! I have been praying and praying about this very thing for so long, and God just kept leading me to law school. I am going into my senior year of undergrad and taking the LSAT this summer, and I feel more confident about this decision. I've always thought of using work to advance God's cause and got hyperfocused on it as a junior lawyer... I think you really gave great insight when you talked about how work could become an idol and distract one from God. Also completely agree with you on the ethical challenges trial lawyers face in having to win the case for a client.

Hi, thank you for this. It has made me feel quite better. This might be long but I just want to share. I have always been a Christian most of my life. But I was never so devoted. I wasn't a church goer. I didn't read the Bible and of course, spread the gospel. I am only 16 years old and I started my journey with God about 3 months ago. I started reading and devotions. And while I was doing my devotions for today, I started crying. I was reading Exodus 21-24 and it was about the commandments and laws, etc. And that reminded me of my dream of being a lawyer. For about a year now, I was so sure that I want to be one. But just a few days ago, 2 of my teachers told me that Law is one of the worst profession and that lawyers always lies, yada yada yada. And that affected me because just as when my relationship with the Lord is improving, I really had to dream of being someone who'd do those kinds of things. I was so confuse if I should still dream of being one and if time comes, should I still go to law school? Nonetheless, thank you for this. It cleared up my mind even just a bit. I'd definitely read that book in the future :)

Why is this even an issue to discuss? The terms "justice"'; "do justly" appear at least 276 times in the Bible. In the OT, one of the key roles of priests is to resolve dispute among God's people, according to how laws from the Lord was interpreted. i.e. Priests were acting as lawyers and judges. They have to be trained in the law. In the NT Paul invoked Roman laws at his time for the purpose of proclaiming the gospel. Today, how can be "do justly" if we don't study law? @BrittanyTran4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your insight! So you are saying that as Christians we shouldn't go to court but instead should settle things within the church or by pastors that oversee the church?
@WongGKT4 жыл бұрын
Brittany Tran of course not! I am saying that studying law and fighting for justice is a core element of Christianity. Please note that I am a lawyer and a seminary graduate.
@BrittanyTran4 жыл бұрын
Got it, sorry I was a little unclear what point you were trying to make in your initial comment and then your response to J L. I think the concern comes from representing someone that is guilty of a crime or has done something that you do not condone.
@WongGKT4 жыл бұрын
@@BrittanyTran I don't even believe representing someone that is guilty should be a concern! There are two core tenants in our legal system: Innocent until proven guilty and accuser has the burden of proof. As a lawyer, it is our ethical duty to uphold these two tenants. In fact, these tenants have roots from the Bible! (see this blog for a discussion drjimmann.com/2018/10/04/bible-even-points-to-idea-of-innocent-until-proven-guilty/) It is also ethical to uphold the principle to "rather to let a guilty one go free, instead of wrongfully convict an innocent one" You may be too young to remember the OJ Simpson case. Do I believe that he committed murder? Absolutely! But do I believe he should be found not guilty? Again absolutely! This is because the defense was able to raise "reasonable doubt" in the evidences. Fast forward a few years. In the late 90s the LAPD was found to have planted evidences causing innocent people to be convicted. This proved that Simpsons lawyers were right when they challenge the evidence. I believe God's justice will apply to every individual. But when we live in a society, upholding the core tenants for justice is even more critical than convicting individual criminals. '

What would you do if within the bounds of your job you are ordered to take on a case the directly goes against your Christian beliefs? Such as defending planned parenthood in litigation or say the gay wedding cake trial that happened a couple years back? Would you just quit your job or do you justify separating your job from your Christian faith in cases like that?

@BrittanyTranАй бұрын
Yes, I believe so!
@lovie_ZoeАй бұрын
@BrittanyTran my dad was saying that I shouldn't go into it since I would have to pick between my morals and a case depending on the case. For example, representing a murderer who did commit tge crime, you would have to make sure that tge murderer does not go to jail even though they deserve it. So could I get into criminal law based on that because I'm really not sure right now?

Being a lawyer is not necessarily being true as any other Job. Lawyers construe the truth or the lie for truth. That's a reality. As you mentioned sometimes you have to defend a murderer. How can a lawyer Glorify God by covering the sins of one and at the same time oppressing the victims that have already suffered the loss by the murderer? Is it not in direct conflict with the ethics of Christianity?
