I totally agree....I started playing in the early 80's and "budget" guitars were complete crap. Honestly not worth even buying. The only way to go at the time was used instruments. I remember getting my first "good" guitar in 1985. It was a Japanese made Fender Strat that my dad found for a steal at a local pawn shop. Beginning guitarists have it made in 2022. There are tons of quality entry level axes to choose from.

I bought the white version a little while back for $169- fantastic value for the money. Back when I started in the 90’s, you could not get anywhere near this quality for $200. Donner should drop all the “case candy” and use that money to put a little more time in the fretboard -like some 6100 size frets, especially. The only flaws I found were a dirty fretboard, a few rough frets, and a slight mark below the 22nd fret where someone missed with the fret press.

How big/tall is the fret on the donner? Is it jumbo enough?

They measure about 0.041" height and 0.095" width which is a little smaller than Dunlop 6170 wire which they consider "Classic Jumbo". I think a lot of older Strats came with 6170 wire. They are by no means comparable to modern jumbo. I did a re-fret with 6100 wire and Its a pretty nice player now. @@kakitangan195

At 199? As a beginner? Hell yes! I think it is awesome that it came with a cable. I remember buying my first guitar and amp at 15 online. I ordered a Bronze by B.C. Rich Warlock and a POS Behringer V-Tone 108 combo because that was all I could afford. I was very confident one of those items would include a cable... nope! The wait for a cable felt veeeeery long. It's a great time to start playing guitar

Dooner and harley definitely on my radar as of late too. I got the harley benton 212 g hb cab loaded with Chinese v30s and it's now my favorite cab. Can't afford mesas like you quite yet but I'll get there. I feel blessed to have hb cab I got for my birthday that's coming up . And some of the alternative options for musicians on a budget is just an awesome thing.

Kyle, nice review.. enjoy getting your opinions on not only amps but gear as well.. you boy Mike W hooked me up and fixed my Splawn.. blown grid resistor on one tube and was unbalanced.. NARROW TALL usually references the classic 6105 which were made famous by EVH which were in essence STRAT narrow frets but taller.. 0.055" x 0.95 wide.. depends how much leveling you need to do before the finial height is determined but most luthiers will shave off 0.07 or more .. Also, some luthiers are now using animal antler (black).. to make black bone nut as antlers are in fact BONE.. cheap at pet supply stores used as dog chews.. fun facts for you.. and Merry Christmas man..!!

That's a fantastic bargain for an out of the box beginner guitar. Set of decent tuners and a drop in used duncan or dimarzio off a certain used gear website and you've got a nice little rock machine on the cheap.

I think narrow tall is sometimes what Gibson calls their fret shape. Its sort of like a medium width, and then a slightly taller than medium height. Guitar seems great for the money. Cool headstock.

Be cautious! I've been using this guitar for a week now and absolutely LOVED it, yet I've noticed that there's a major, electronic flaw with it. After noticing that there's an obvious pick-up sound bleed between the bridge & neck (where the active pickup gets the sound of the inactive one), I've made some changes. First, I changed the switch, and then I got a new pick-up for the bridge thinking that they might be microphonic, and also shielded the cavities, however, none of them helped. Then I noticed that the connection over the PCB where 2 pots and all the rest are gathered, is just incorrectly designed. It's different than the 4-wire default schematics. To be more precise; the connections on the Volume pot are wrong, lug 1 and lug 2 must be swapped in between, lug 3 is gnd anyway, tone control is also correct. I've removed the pots from the PCB and mounted them on the guitar directly, made the harness as it should be, and voila, everything is working great! I don't know how Donner made such a mistake, but god knows how many guitars with this PCB are on sale / sold already.

Man I like this guitar. I wonder if the resistance you’re feeling isn’t the fretboard also? On some of the cheaper Ibanez models I’ve played with a Jatoba board I noticed some scratchiness and resistance as well. But that guitar sounds dope for a budget model!!!

They really got the specs and features right on this thing. They look really slick too. I think I'm going to do a high integrity mod on one. I just can't decide between black or white. For 200 bucks, if it plays, shows up in decent condition that's a good deal. I think the hardware needs replacing, you can really hear that nasally upper mid tone that comes from the cheap cast metal they use for the bridge, but a few little upgrades and that's looks like a great guitar. Reminds me a lot of the old Ibanez RG320 series.

Change the fret wire to stainless steel frets, switch out the pickups for some Seymour Duncan black winters, and put some locking tuners and you got yourself a forever guitar

Only problem I have with the Donner guitars I've played, and own(dlp124), is I get loads of inconsistent buzzed notes on low E string. I've got to hit them almost over top of fret, to avoid it. My Glarry's have no such trouble.

Modding wise it is a beast for that! If the frets are in good shape, I can't see why a newbie would not give this guitar a try. I am an LTD fanboy. So lower cost higher end guitars are my thing. I do have Gibsons, but my LTD's are always my go to guitars. Well those and my Gibson Les Paul Studio!

@@elevenAD I have not played an LTD that was not a great guitar. All of my guitars are set neck or neck thru. That is only a personal preference. I can’t hear a difference, I don’t think anyone really can, between set neck and bolt on neck guitars. I just like the look of a set neck guitar.

Sharp and fret sprout is my biggest pet peeve. Absolutely turns me off to a guitar if the fretboard edge and frets are not finished well. Good to here that this guitar is decent in that department. I’ve felt $1000 fenders with nasty sharp frets. Yuck no ty.

I actually dig these things. Simple and straight forward spec sheet, it's got a hipshot knock-off bridge, which to me are the most comfortable style of bridges to play on, I also dig the headstock design, seems sort of Mayones esque. Body shape is nice. Amazon reviews say it's got a 14" radius and somewhat rolled fretboard edges like you were saying. Pretty sweet little package. Wonder what the body material is, but at this price point it really doesn't matter. Guessing basswood or poplar. I'm seriously considering buying one as I watch this video. I already have some spare pickups(Duncan Custom and '59) and some CTS pots to use with them as well. The only other thing I'd really do is swap the nut for a graphtech and shield the pickup cavities if they aren't already. After that, it could turn into a nice little workhorse.

The thing is jackson sells a dinky for the same price and you get the jackson name. My first guitar was a cheap squire that I sold pretty quickly and bought a bc rich. Not worth putting mods into these guitars. I think its worth investing in something decent like at least a schecter for your 2nd real guitar. I still have that bc rich 20 years later and it still feels like home to me. I learned my chops on it and played it for hours a day for at least 14 years until I got another guitar. I really hate laurel or amaranth or whatever fake rosewood substitute

Mayones guitars did a great journey from unknown boutique to one of the most respected guitar manufacturers, so other brands started copying them. Some years ago Jackson and Ibanez started to copy Mayones paint jobs, then many Chinese Mayones copies started to appear here and there , but now we have a real brand with Mayo shape ripoff. This guitar looks exactly like Mayones Duvell model. But with one difference - 15 times cheaper 😂😂😂

Good value for the money but nothing I would buy. The best thing it ups the standard of basic spec and play-ability of the very cheap guitars. I would have preferred some colors and more of a basic Charvel approach based on a Strat body.

My main player right now is a $199 2014 (Alder/Maple/Rosewood) Squier Affinity Jazzmaster HH w/ less than $100 of after market mods. Apparently the A/M/R ones are kinda rare? As Squier shifted to poplar and laurel mid production. I owned one of the later ones, and it didn't have the same mojo, so I sold it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ If you know a thing or two about setups? There is no shame to the cheap axe game IMO. C&C manufacturing has just gotten that good, and personally? I dig ceramic magnet pups over alnico. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

They have come out with a new version of the guitar with an unpainted neck and maybe it looks like the frets are larger but I can't tell in the pictures, that is really all this guitar needs maybe some locking tuners too... I can't say too much though never had one in my hands but Kyle explains the best out of anyone on how a guitar feels in the hands.

i just got mine and the bridge is not a lined with the holes in the guitar proper they are offcenter so it seems the bridge is off some i could almost not get the new strings on because of it but i do think the pickups are some of the best metal ones in a guitar for the price but i dont know how the guitar passed qc so not sure what i will do

It's not uncommon to find bone nuts dyed black. Most luthier supply stores carry black dyed bone nuts pre-cut and in nut blanks. I recently ordered this guitar so when it arrives I'll verify.

I bought a Donner Thinline telecaster about a year ago for $115 bucks and the quality, sound and playability surprised me. I swapped the pickups with Seymour Duncan P-Rails and Triple Shot switchable pickup rings and it's now one of my favorite guitars to play. The stock pickups actually sounded really good and had a type of ghost overtone about them, so I decided to swap them with the stock pickups in my PRS 277 and added 1 meg pots and it was a huge improvement over the stock PRS pickups, which sounded a bit dull and muddy.

Aren't the dots already at the side, to look at? The mini ones on the edges. They'll be fine because when I noticed that learning on it? My playing ability improved 3x time faster having that in mind rather than trying to memorize the front side of the fret dots
