I play in a metal band. My rhythm guitarist has this amp. It absolutely does not need boost pedals. This thing is incredible sounding as is. I use a mesa dual rec with a Fortin 33 in front and it sounds darn good. And my mate's bugera sounds even better.

This video is 2 years old. But I just found it today. The Bugera 333 and the Bugera 333XL are diferent amps. Based on the same, bit the XL is a newer version. The 333XL has an extra couple of switches on the crunch channel and the lead channel (one per channel), under the channel selector. The buttons are named "XL". What it does is boost the low end a little.

I had the 333xl version of this amp but switched power tubes to mesa 6l6's. It was a great amp for what I paid but it was not the most durable. It broke down on me and I had to have a tech fix it. It had a bunch of poor solder points that needed to be redone. After that it was good. It sounds great and saturates well. The tightness was very good. I used to play with a bandmate that used a 6505 head. The 6505 did have more cut and would drown the Bugera out to a degree. I got lots of compliments from other bands about the sound at shows so it must have sounded good in the crowd.

I think one of the most underrated heads was the Crate BV/Blue Voodoo 120/200 using the 6L6's/ 12ax-7 combination. Really close to the 6505 sound, but just enough to be a little dirtier.

Thanks for doing this amp justice🤘 I know you've done alot with the Randall solid state heads but Im curious to see what you think of the Randall RH line. Kyle!! The active EQ is only working on the higher gain Ultra (Lead) channel!! The crunch channel has a passive tone stack.
@alphanumeric1529
@alphanumeric1529 5 ай бұрын
Man, I've read so many different "rumors" about the eq's on this amp. I can't get solid info, I'm to the point where I'm about to test the amp with sine waves and white noise to see which channels, if any, or all of them, is active. I've read that the clean channel eq is active, and that the crunch channel is not. And I might be inclined to believe it, as the eq on the clean is more extreme than the eq on the crunch...? I've discovered turning all eq bands all the way down and then setting the eq from there - with my 333 and my cab, it is helluv bassy at not ear bleeding levels... if you do go to ear bleed levels, I don't know if it is the head, or the cab, but the highs come out and ice pick your ears, absolutely painful. Point is, your overall volume (whether achieved with channel volume and or main volume) massively affects the eq curve, which makes setting and knowing this amp difficult... let alone other channels that are not engaged affecting the channel that you are on... BUT, I eq all eq bands down, then roll up the highs and maybe a scintilla of mids to balance the highs against the booming lows which seem to dominate, for me, with all eq at noon. This has been making the amp usable for me lately... but this amp is a freaking mystery, everything is related to everything else, and you never know what is doing what to your sound. This is this amp's real liability, imo, not the fire thing, though my amp did melt down and kill the amp. It was restored by soldering the power connection directly to the board, the cheap plastic clip is the basis for all the supposed fire stories. Anyway... wish I had an amp where I could control each channel by itself, and get the eq curve I want, and the gain level I want. My amp is just way too gainy, doesn't even sound like other demos of this amp. Crunch channel gain at 8 o'clock, the lowest it will go and still pass sound, is like hurricane in the desert, grainy blasting noise. The lead channel... forget about it, insta-noise complaint from anyone within a mile. I could play the lead channel on the moon, and you'd hear me on Earth. Crazy amp.

I wonder if the mid-range characteristic you are referring to that all the Bugeras seem to share isn't due to the auto bias which actually amounts to what's called cathode biasing. It does impart its own sonic signature, though in a small way. High gain and harmonic content may showcase that particular quality. I own the 333 XL and a 6260 but I have nothing to compare them to. Thanks for the review!

This was my first tube amp. I still have it and haven't played guitar in nearly two years now because of work and lack of motivation. I have a Randall 4x12 loaded with vintage 30s. Your inspiring me to take the cover off and start playing again. I replaced all of the stock Bugera tubes with JJ tubes. So I have EL34 tubes in it but there seems to be that british tone or maybe I'm insane I don't know. I've heard amps with 6L6 and they sound like they have flatter response. But I have also seen videos of guys saying they make no difference at all and that power tubes don't alter the tone. Would be so nice if you had a video of a single amp or pair of matching amps that you could AB riffs and tones with nothing changing in the setup except for the power tube type. With the whole Russia Ukraine thing going on tube prices have gone up and are getting rare I think so my timing sucks with wanting to buy new 6L6 tubes. Any chance you could do an AB video EL34 vs 6L6 with tones like these? Great videos man!

man, can you tell me more? The clean channel doesn't affect the other channels when not active, just the two gain channels? The gain of the two gain channels affect each other? But does the EQ of each gain channel affect the other gain channel? And if yes to these questions, what the hell? Who would design an amp to do this? This is idiotic in my opinion. Am I crazy for wanting control over each channel, separately, like that is why there are channels in the first place, so you can have separate discreet sounds dialed in on each separate channel, then access them by switching channels? What the hell???!!!
@cero815
@cero815 Жыл бұрын
Nice playing and testing. But you could have been trying harder on answering your own question. Perfect time would have been at the end. You have "been there and done that" comparison, feeling it :) While I totally agree on your opinion about active vs passive controls on one hand, that there is a lot of versatility for building a great tone or totally runing it, on the other hand I disagree about the influence between them. This is as active filters by nature usually show the advantage of having less to no real influence on the source than passive ones since they mean lesser loads.

Now it's a 50 watter. You could keep the switch at 8Ω but wouldn't be ideal.
@dougietamson
@dougietamson 2 жыл бұрын
Just to be clear, don't set the impedance switch to be higher than the actual speaker load, eg 8Ω into 4Ω load, the output transformer wants to "see" a matched equal load, never a lower one as that could cause damage (eg overheating) at the OT. A higher speaker load eg 8Ω into 16Ω is ok but may change the tone.
