Can a Marshall Studio Vintage 20W Drive a FULL STACK?

I'm playing a Marshall Studio Vintage SV20H 20W head through a 1971 Marshall Full Stack consisting a two Marshall 1960A and B 4x12 speaker cabinets. I'm investigating how loud this rig is and whether it can keep up with a drummer. I'm playing it with a 1973 Gibson Les Paul Custom.
Also check out my previous video:
"So, is a Marshall Wall MEANINGLESS or the ULTIMATE tone?"

I like my lead 12 very much but it was the combo Abs was no loud enough in its own so when a MG15 mini stack showed up for cheap I snagged it up and I like it more than the lead 12. The MG15 mini head drives 2 full sized 16 ohm 412 cabinets just fine !

@Turboy65 That’s a great little amp. I have the Lead 12 combo. The only thing I don’t like about it is that it doesn’t have much bass even through a 4x12. However, I’ve put the line out from the lead 12 into the effects return jack on amps and got good results.

If you are on the endless quest for "tonal nirvana", this man is "North". The reason I say that is because we live in a world where amp modelers, plugins and amp pedals are all the rage. Through his remarkable access to incredible amps, he reminds us what a good tone is and how to get it. If you're a guitar player, this man should be your spirit animal if you want to know where to start when looking for a good tone.

I loved the nerding on the microphone position! Last summer I carried out some tests to prepare to make «IR packs» of my speakers (still not done). The main speaker I used for my tests was a G12M Heritage. I unexpectedly got a very clean IR from a small room that doesn't have many reflections, so I tried to dig more on the topic. I have access to a small warehouse in the countryside, surrounded by wheat fields. I carried out an open field test, getting as close as I could to the conditions of an anechoic chamber to prevent reflections and standing waves: it was made on grass, near a pool full of water, on a slight slope going downhill, and the cab always pointing to a wheat field and a bunch of trees full of leaves. It was revealing in the sense that I found out reflections weren't so problematic, but diffraction from the speaker baffle/cab was, and especially any surface behind it caused most of the measurable trouble. The cab position varied between under a porch (at the very edge of it, where it ended, a wall around 2.5 m behind), and 10 m away from the porch. Under the porch there were so many weird diffraction artifacts, close to it (but already outside it) there were just a few, the furthest from it the IR was absolutely clean (but the sound wasn't exciting, it was better in the room, despite artifacts). After I did some small research to improve my amateur knowledge, it turns out that apparently in that small room I unintentionally prevented diffraction by the soft objects around the place where I positioned the cab (sound-absorbing in a way). So I'd consider separating the stack from the wall, and using some sound-absorbing material right behind the cab (even a couple of coats at both sides could work), and that could potentially improve the consistency/definition/smoothness of the sound. Or either my conclusions could be wrong 🤡, I'm still learning.

I have an SV20 (with matching 2x12 cab, swapped with greenbacks) absolutely love it, the sounds are there and it is incredibly light very easy to transport. Downside is not loud enough for my band. My drummer is very loud, gunshot snare hits and lots of cymbal wash, there is not enough headroom on this. Also played through my Orange open back 2x12 cab with a blue and green, still not loud enough. Funny thing is at home, the 5 watt setting is loud - not bedroom level at all. It's great for recording and home practice, it has that sound without the hearing loss and noise violations.

I've been on the fence about getting that 20 watt head for a long time. The wattage ratio per speaker efficiency is way off. I'm sure it still sounds nice, but there's a lot to be said for speaker handling. I've did a lot of experimenting with this with the guidance of a former speaker manufacturer over 25 years ago. Volume and reactive efficiency are two different things. The Blue 🔵 is rated at 15 watts and two of those would be more properly matched to the head. Two ten's or even four ten's like a 1965 cab would be better. I keep thinking, what am I going to run this head through if I pick one up? We're talking 10 watts rms through each speaker. It's like air pressure or water pressure running through a hose diameter. It's odd that Celestion didn't work with them on something more efficient.

First impressions: Great playing as always! I'm not too sure about this, but i feel like the dynamics might be lacking to some extent, and i question if this might be the difference from 20W to 50W or 100W. It's like lead is sometimes as big or bigger than the chords. It's hard to guess because lots of variables like playing or room. I'd actually love a comparison of some sorts.

6:50 Sensitivity, not efficiency. Sensitivity - how much change in input will translate to how much change in output. In this case, units are dB per 1W, per 1m. efficiency is different - how much of power going in a system translate to power coming out... in percentage.For that matter, this type of speaker is a very inefficient transducer, less than 5%. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudspeaker#Efficiency_vs._sensitivity Thanks for all the informative videos Johan!

@@JohanSegeborn When you get access to the new JTM Studio, don't forget to make this video. It must be brutal to hear that model in that room. Not on the computer (IR's) like the others do. Again, Regards

the problem with db and watts, doubling the number of watts you don't have 3 db more because 3 db more is double volume, and i m afraid is not like that to my knowledge.

Maybe I misspoke, +3dB for every doubling of power (wattage)

I refuse to believe that the ONLY thing that matters is the speakers. Despite the fact that every bit of evidence I've seen so far seems to point in that direction
@JohanSegeborn

The amp is very important for dynamics and relative loudness of strings and sub set of strings. The speakers are just a filter actually. But still extremely important

Wattage and loudness ain't linear, twice as loud takes ten times the wattage eg.. 200 watts will be twice as loud (10db's) as 20 watts, 40watts is just perceivably louder (3db's) than 20 watts.
