Great comparison video! I like how the old e100 sounds. The high frequencies are not "hyped" like other cheap large diaphragm condensers. The old one has a much smoother high frequency sound that I find much more listenable. I might be biased since I do own the old one, but whenever I use the old e100 or e200, people tend to be blown away by the sound.

Hi Mike, I just wanted to thank you for your awesome channel. I think I watched about 20 of your videos trying to zero in on a mic to buy. I have bought and tried a few, but none of them were quite right for my voice. Then I found you and this video introduced me to the CAD E100... a mic I NEVER would have heard about if not for you. (I'm not a pro VO guy, just looking to add some narration to my videos.) So after I saw this video, I went looking on ebay and found a virtually new, un-used original E100 and bought it! It's never even had batteries plugged into it. It arrived, I just tried it out and it's perfect. I'm sending the SM7B back to Amazon tomorrow. Thanks again... Keep up the awesome videos!

The new one accentuated the s sibilance and was a little harsher.
@Guitarhero18006 жыл бұрын
Most people have a preference when making the 'S' sound to either the left or the right side of the mouth (to make the S sound, the tongue will push against the front teeth but it's not against the teeth smack in the middle but rather to one side or another). So the sibilance will sound brighter when you put the microphone on the preferred side. For instance if your tongue is more to the right side of your mouth when making the S sound, the sibilance will be higher on the right side. Basically: The sound coming out of the mouth (while talking or singing) is NOT symmetric. Even though we think of it as a 'mono' source, we actually talk in stereo!! That aside, I do agree with you the new mic sound more aggressive.

I thought my beloved 1994 E100 was toast, I pulled it out the case and had a bad hum. Turns out the set screw for the male XLR is threaded backwards, and when I pulled out my XLR, it came out just a bit and disconnected one wire (floating ground or unbalanced). I had to read the schematics and replace wires, reassemble. The bad thing is the wire used, is like 30 Gauge, and there was less than a cm of play. I had to disassemble and clean the the solder joints and solder in absolutely tight spaces. FYI - RED(pin 2 XLR)(PCB "A") | Black(pin 1 XLR)(PCB "C") | White (pin 3 XLR)(PCB "B"). After fixing it, oh how sweet, and cause I was in such despair before the repair, I ordered a shinny E100sx .... and a TZ Audioproducts Stellar X2. I need to stop listening to you(Ha), but you have been spot on about the CAD E100

A note about the old e100 and battery usage. If you are recording loud sources the batteries actually give an extra oomph of current to the microphone in addition to phantom power. So, you need them. (I am an e100-II user)

I love it. "We''ll see how they sound." I don't know what you guys are listening with, but in my moderately alright Sennheiser monitors, the e100s sounds like a toy compared to the vintage model. The older one is rich, full, warm, and golden. The e100s sounds tinny, thin, and grating in comparison. Clear is not the word I'd use. It's sharp. I can really hear what he calls the "gravel" in his voice that he says is the reason the NT1a is not for him. It sounds like tired, swollen vocal folds and makes my EQ finger twitchy! The old one is clear, but smooth, and that gravel sound is just enough for some texture. If you've got decent monitors, that e100 just jumps forward, but in a very enticing way. The e100s makes me want to jump back. It's a nice mic on it's own, but I've rarely heard such a dramatic difference in color between mics in a shootout. Even with different brands and different price ranges. I guess most voice over people don't have the kind of ears that you get when you've done some mixing and mastering. They really get to be sensitive to a lot of nuance, even through not-so-great monitors. The difference to me is astounding.

Hey, Mike! Could you do a MKH 416/vintage e100 shootout? I bought 2 of those after seeing this video, and when I get a chance to record with them through an Apollo Twin using the Neve preamp, I always, and I mean every single time, get an email or call from the producer asking what I used to record the file. These are guys getting files from voice actors all day long using all kinds of Neumanns and the MKH 416. I've already tested against all the current Neumanns, and the TLM 107 is the only one that comes close. It sounds as good as my friend's Neumann/Telefunken U47 on cello and piano. The only mic I'd ever care to buy VO after using this one is the MKH 416. I'd love to hear them side-by-side. Also, the main reason for the batteries was to provide extra power to capture transients. You actually have to open the mic and change a jumper setting to make the batteries power the mic. Just thought you'd like to know in case you ever find yourself in need of phantom power.

I Brought My Original CAD E100 to the 2015 AES Show in N.Y.C. and we had a Shootout. It Blew Away the E100s which is a re-issue from China. And when used with a Pro Preamp it sounds even BETTER in Detail. It's most requested over My Neumann, So that says a lot : ) and this is Why. The Equitek E-100 incorporates a number of unique features including: Servoed head amplifiers. High SPL Capability (148 dB SPL with pad). Transformerless balanced output circuits. Internal power reservoir system that can supply ten times the current available from phantom powering alone. Dual cantilevered capsule shock isolators. Remote operation without phantom power using internal batteries. 20 dB non capacitive pad. Stainless steel internal pop/EMI filter. Automatic power shut down circuit.

I have a vintage one I got on eBay a year and a half ago with the case and shockmount for about $170 after shipping... I did have to replace the batteries with (NiMH?) rechargable. According to CAD, you can test it with alkaline batteries, but you run the risk of damaging it if you try to use it that way (NiMH batteries have slightly lower voltage. I did find a manual online. IIRC, the mic requires more power than a preAmp (or at least some preAmps) will provide, so the batteries are being used even when phantom power is on. It will run without phantom power, but there is a jumper or something you have to set inside the mic or battery compartment to enable it to work in that configuration.
@lounor16 жыл бұрын
I just purchased the vintage E-100 and changed the jumper configuration to change the auto power circuit enabled feature. It is now on the auto power circuit disabled mode. I tried recording into my Zoom F1 field recorder with does not have phantom power it worked perfectly off of the 9v batteries inside of the E-100. You just have to remember to turn the mic off after each use otherwise the batteries will die.

Hey Again Mike, Something about the old E100 reminded me of a Neumann U67, listened to a few samples and sure enough, very close. Then I went to Recording Hacks and compared frequency plots, and they are scary close there as well. As you may know the U67s are pretty well respected voice over mics. I'm thinking mic snobs of the time, the 90's, or even now may over look CADs completely. The old ones are going for $400.00 avereage on ebay, it sounds like a real winner! Keep em! The E100S is also a great mic, more of a high fi modern sound, but still very even and smooth, you are lucky to have both! Thanks Again for doing this!

Did you notice there's little need for the pop filter on the vintage mic? It's got a stainless steal pop filter under the outer brass mesh. Not much need for a shock mount, either. The diaphragm module has a shock absorber around it. Simply one of the best mics ever made. That new one pops all the time in this, even with the filter. The vintage barley pops at all, even without it.

I'm shocked at the difference. It's even more dramatic than the RØDE NT1A v the CAD E100s. That E100 sounds gorgeous and warm. It makes the E100 sound tiny and thin. The E100s picks up that gravel you say you don't like in your voice. I couldn't really hear what your were talking about when you mentioned that in the NT1A v E1000s video, but it's really obvious here. I could definitely be happy with the vintage E100 as a forever mic. Or an "at least until I can afford the MKH 416" mic. I'd be interested in hearing the 416 next to a RØDE NTG4 PLUS. For now, it's my sturdy standby NT1A, which actually works really well with my voice which is deep (a lot of it is between 50 and 100 Hz), so I don't mind the brightness of the RØDE. But that ES100 just sounds so warm and pleasing. It handles the low end without making it sound too boomy or muddy. I really love it. I was considering the E100s, but no more! I'll hang on to the RØDE until I can find one of those E100 vintage models somewhere.

Here's that comparison between the Sennheiser 416 and the RØDE NTG4. Unfortunately, the test was done at a distance like they would be used to capture on-site audio for film. The RØDE lacks the warmth and velvety rich sound of the 416, but has a nice, crisp and not tinny high end. I'd love to hear the proximity effect on it. It may sound even nicer than the 416 up close. kzbin.info/www/bejne/goqbd3hva7h9btE

So frustrating trying to find the original e100! All that I can find on eBay are e100 2 mics that were made in China. The difference between the original and the e100s is HUGE. I love the old one. Not so hot about the new one. Man! as I write this I can hear him switching back and forth and I want that original mic so bad I can taste it! It actually had a built in shock mount around the diaphragm capsule and a built in metal pop screen behind the brass outer casing, which is why you can't see the diaphragm which is smaller than the e100s.. Ugh! it's driving me crazy every time I hear him switch. The new one sounds so thin and cheap compared to the original. Gimme, gimme, gimme! Someone has to have one! Notice no popping on the original, even when the pop filter is over on the new one. Awesome mic!

A couple of days ago, I couldn't find an e100 to save my life. Just piles of the the e100 2, which is crap from what I can tell. Today, I found 5. I don't want to say where. But here's the thing. I've been disabled for 7 years with no income. The only work I can do now is VO because I cannot stand or sit for more than a few minutes at a time. But, because of the lack of income, I've been homeless for 2 years. I'm now in a shelter that focuses on helping addicts get clean, off the streets and into a real life-something many of them have never even known. They also provide an alcohol and drug free shleter for people like me who don't have substance abuse issues but have been completely devastated by lawyer incompetence and Social Security's dirty tricks. (It literally took going to my Congressman to even get them to respond to my lawyer after 18 months of stonewalling them. They were caught in an outright lie to my Congressman, so a rep at Social Security got so angry about it that she went over one head after another until she got them to finally respond, which just started another agonizing waiting period.) I'm working on a project at this shelter to build a studio out of a revolutionary sound deadening product so that we can demonstrate to the many people here who have never had a shred of hope beyond maybe landing an $11 an hour job, which isn't enough to get them into a home. The directors of the charity and I are working hard to show them what it's like to build a business from the ground up and make it successful. Hope is THE most important thing that keeps people from returning to their addictions. In the course of this project, we are partnering with experts in this material to create a far more affordable solution to creating a soundproof environment than a Whisper Room. This could be revolutionary. But I need a good quality mic to make the project work. If anyone out there would be willing to contact me to make a tax deductible donation to the 501c3 so we can get one of these vintage CAD e100 mics, it would be a life changing thing for many people. This small shelter scrapes by on change at the end of the month in order to provide rides for people to get to their jobs or look for work. The income we could make if we just had the studio finished and a decent mic would have a huge immediate impact on the survival of many, and start the ball rolling on something that will not just improve the whole surrounding local community, but also provide a tremendously revolutionary option for anyone recording from home. Please contact me at freshvoiceover at yandex dot com if you can help with a tax deductible donation of any kind, but especially if you would be willing to purchase one of these affordable e100 mics for our project. We are passionate about making a profound change by making a way for the homeless to help the homeless. We have the talent here. We have the studio on the way, and we are determined to make a powerful change for the disabled homeless population and booth junkies everywhere. Please get in touch if you can help in any way. We are happy to send you more information about the shelter, our project, and anything else you would need in order to feel wonderful about helping save some lives. Thank you!

Hello Mike. Nice comparison! I agree with you: good mic can stand for a LONG time. BUT, there is a catch: materials evolved a lot on the past decade and we can notice how the modern e100s has more clarity/sharpness on treble, easily. True: the e100 still sounds awesome - if someone on a budget finds it as a bargain, why not? My first "good-enough" microphone was a Blue Yeti - as thousands of KZbinrs also have - and I recently changed for the Blue Spark (exactly for the reason you explained: having Mic independent of the interface). I am very fan of Blue Microphones (maybe I was caught by the "coolness" of the brand, the odd mic shapes and names...) - have you tried some of their XLR mics? What is your take on Blue Mics?

I do notice a slightly "warmer" sound out of the E100, but honestly, the two are nearly identical. If a mic is stored correctly - in a booth free of dust and dramatic changes in humidity, there should be no reason why it shouldnt last 30 or maybe even 40 years.

Both sound great and would be a great mic to use. Love the design of both mics too! Are these real sensitive to room noise?I know they are probably large diaphragm condensers...
@BoothJunkie8 жыл бұрын
Indeed they are large diaphragm condensers, and they are *slightly* less susceptible to room noise as they are *super*cardiod pattern, which is somewhat narrower in sensitivity than a traditional cardiod pattern mic, Sound has to be much more in front of these mics, and so they will not pick up noise form the left or right quite as loudly.

More of the higher frequencies (air) on the modern one. A matter of taste I'd say.

didn’t know the batteries on vintage one a rechargable. Thanks

It's said to be a condenser, but it's an Electret microphone ! So after 20 years the electret is already well discharged, and there is a loss of level (sensitivity) and loss of detail in other frequencies ... Twenty years ago he must have had almost the same sound as the new one.

Vintage one sounds a bit too bassy so I would've switched on the high-pass on that one.

Your channel is really helpful I subscribed promptly. I already have a high pitched voice, being female, so I'm interested in the E100 for its 'warmth' it would be interesting to see how my voice sounds when I get and use one. Thanks for very good work done. 👏🏽👏🏽

Torn between an MKH 416 or a u87 if I were to choose a forever mic. Have you ever taken a look at the mods Micheal Jolly makes?
@BoothJunkie8 жыл бұрын
+ThickFreedom I haven't used a Michael Joly mic, but I've been intrigued by those hulk 990 mods. Just never pulled the trigger. I'd love to get my grubby mitts on one though! Someday....

I know you can't say his mics straight up beat the Neuman u87, but what do you think about those MJ mods vs mics under $2000? Congratulations on your first 1k subs! Honestly your videos are quality, if you pump them out more & take over some searches you will grow very very quickly.

Great videos! Have you ever tried a Tascam recorder? Are the Zoom H5 or the Tascam DR-100 MKIII better as preamps than a AudioBox iTwo? I want to buy one of those recorders because they look really versatile and useful.

the newer one was brighter, that's what I heard. That's better though, because you can always filter in post and make up for the harshness

E100s is a better mic even if the E100 were new. I was going to but an Aston mic, it's the E100s now
@57Techboy4 жыл бұрын
There's a reason why the e100s sounds much more brighter than the e100. The frequency response of the 2 mics are drastically different. See links below e 100s link: recordinghacks.com/frequency-graphs.php/1128 e 100 link: recordinghacks.com/frequency-graphs.php/1131

I would love to see/hear a comparing of a vintage shure sm58 (maybe from the 90's) vs a new generation of sm58, i have see some photos, but you do some cool videos and just to see if there any difference in sound (the vintage sm58 were made in USA) and the new generation from Mexico, i hope to see this stand off, cheers from Argentina! P.s: i also look the video of the counterfeit sm58, i got scam on that one, but i when the next day i bought the original and i take it to the first saler for a refund and they give me my money back.

Old microphones have problems with high frequencies. The membrane gets less tense (wearout) and (like a string in a guitar) vibrates more with low frequencies than high ones. This phenomenon is audible in your test, but I bet it would be much more pronounced if you had used a female voice for the test.
