"Don't bring your ego" That is the main reason why I only did one group ride and will never again. I am humble and could care less if you ride a new bike or an old one as long as you are riding. I must have been the only one that felt that way. They were snobing my brand new Yamaha cruiser because it was not a "real bike" ( A Harley) even though, all of their Real bikes were old and generally not that great. Second reason, everyone there felt like they knew better than you. Third, even though we had a great route, it felt rushed and it wasn't fun. Never again, I will remain solo, at least I can go and stop where I want and don't have to deal with insecure assholes.

I used to ride an 05 ninja ex250 everywhere. I commuted on it, toured on it, sported around on it. I put 55k miles on it. I knew that bike like the back of my hand. When I would get into a spirited ride with guys who had "real" sport bikes, I would keep up with them with relatively little effort. They would start getting sloppy and their form would suffer trying to get away from me, but eventually they would get mentally fatigued and give up. Sometimes at stop signs and whatnot, they would look over to see what I was on and be dismayed to see my beat up old purple ex250. I would just smile.

Been doing group rides every weekend for 5 years now. 15 to 40 bikes average on hard twist roads with insane elevation up's and down drops and running along some mouth dropping ocean road you have ever seen, and it's a blast. Took my sons KLX300SM to one and everyone was snickering, but at the last stop while I was waiting drinking a gatorade waiting for the hole group to catch up the snickering was turned to respect for that little bike. I had more fun on that bike then any in my stable of custom bikes my MT07, MT09, XSR900, CBR600RR, CBR1000RR. You are spot on about group rides, We have about 150 members, we have a truck with a trailer on stand by and many times have a car or truck carrying drinks and sandwiches for us. It's a family event. We have Harleys, sportbikes, naked bikes, trikes you name it and he right it does make you a better rider. We all ways have a front runner and a rear runner looking out for the hole group and switch out so every one can do there thing and have added break a way fun. If you have a good group it's addictive if not keep searching you will find one that fit's you.

You can hang no problem on small displacement bikes. Where you _really_ have to be careful is the 50-80mph roll on isn't anything compared to middleweight upwards and in a group you *will* be overtaking cars. It'll be harder for you than any of the others, so be careful. Use your gearing and keep that RPM right up there, I've kissed the limiter passing cars a few times. You need every last drop of power.

Good on you for the honest feedback! More people talking about the capabilities of sub-500 CC bikes, the more people might think they can afford to get into the sport. I ride dualsport with my mentor, who is an ex-professional motocross racer. His current bike is a Kawasaki Versys-X 300. At 81 years of age now, he will consistently hit 3 figures (kms) out on the gravel roads. I'm sure with the proper gearing, he could have kept up on your group ride. The one big advantage of the smaller CC bikes is WEIGHT and flickability. When you go down past 90 degrees on a dirt trail with a 500-600 lbs bike, at a certain age, it becomes extremely challenging to get the bike back up on your own. Safe riding!
@dillee99883 жыл бұрын
Yes a smaller bike can keep up with bigger bikes, the biggest difference is pull away, but you really notice the biggest difference if you ride with a pillion, then you have to work the gears a bit more, where the bigger bikes just eccelarate without having to work the gears.

@KageStelhman3 жыл бұрын
Of course a Ninja 400 can hang with the bigger bikes on a Group Ride... Plus as you said, they're an absolute blast... On the road and on the track, as far as keeping up on the latter I've personally smoked bikes that were at least 1 or 2 classes above of my bikes range because they were too focused on keeping theirs under control and not on the fundamentals of riding Just remember it isn't how fast you can go in a straight, but how you handle the turns... and a nimble little bike like a Ninja 400 makes said turns almost god mode level easy. Anyhow y'all Greetings from Portland OR If y'all ever find yourselves in the neighborhood, I'll more than likely see y'all out at P.I.R. (Portland International Raceway)
@Kingepticon4 жыл бұрын
I was smoking litre bikes and 600s in the twisties on a 300. Rider skill is more important than CCs. In fact, I had more fun on a 300 than I did a ZX-6R 636. I'd rather use 100% of the bike all the time than less than 50% most of the time.

If you want to learn to take the most of a bike, exploring gears, get a 300 or 400cc. With higher cc most people get lazy shifting. Even if you have a bigger bike, using a lower cc bike sometimes, can help with your driving skills to take the most on a bigger bike.

Dont worry, as long as you have 1000km on it and an oilchange after you'll be fine running redline a little longer. The redline is where it is because its the maximum the engine is designed to do with some reserves usually. The redline is there so you dont spin it too fast meaning at redline its not spinning "too fast".

I wouldn't worry about the redlines. I ride my R3 at 100+ (still have 10K rpm left) all the times. And I constantly shift at redlines every gear, pretty much full throttle all the times. I am sure the 400 can do better than that.

Beginners don't normally learn on a 1000cc bike. They start out with small cc and learn the basics. It does not mean these bikes are limited to beginners. Some experienced riders are satisfied with small cc bikes and some aren't.

Just regarding the first half of the video about a small bike handling the highways and stuff like that. Personally, I have an FZ/MT-07. By no means is this the fastest bike ever but I am a bit of a speedy junky and inevitably find myself upwards of 90 with relative ease and not even trying to be. But, I do agree, going 100+ on the street is wreckless and not at all necessary. That being said, I've heard many seasoned riders say the Grom is one of the most fun bikes they've ridden because you're always pushing it to its limits and using its full potential. With all these things in mind, I've really been wanting to get a "starter" sport bike, like the Ninja 400. But I've also been torn and wanted to pick up something in the 600 class like an R6. So, I've just been building the "perfect" small bike in my head lately that you could push the limits on without being too crazy but also not too lame or tame either and still be a comfortable commuter or daily rider. I was thinking something like a Ninja 400 but upgrade that to a 450 cc engine, full exhaust system of your choice, short throw throttle tube (R6), a steeper angle on the windshield to push the wind overhead more without increasing the shield size, adjustable rearsets to adjust your triangle for the ride you're on, and toggleable ABS and TCS. Then some more luxury items like a "better" seat and adjustable forks. Just building an all around fun bike. Oh the fun that could be had with a large disposable income 😄 Honestly if you read this far, I commend you. Hope you have a good day! Feel free to offer any input. New ideas or call it stupid idc, just having fun dreaming about a luxury 450 Sportbike lol.

I have a Grom, and a cbr1000rr. I fully get you. I'm trying to get rid of the 1000. Sold an mt07 bcuz I didn't like how light the front end was in most phases of riding. Lots of torque and weight is further back than a fairing bike. I am between the 400 and 650 ninjas and reeeaaally trying to get on board with the 400, cuz it will help out the wallet 😂
@zac99334 жыл бұрын
@@scotthogan6495 I started out riding on dirt when I was younger so the MT07 was a comfortable fit for me because it has a very similar seating style. I'd love to get a grom, i just don't have the room to store it right now. Lmao I feel you though mate, saving a couple bucks is always good XD honestly i really want to pick up a 400 i dont really plan on going on the track and with a couple easy mods and a quick tune there's plenty of power behind the Ninja 400. I think replacing the air filter/ intake, exhaust, and sprockets would wake it up plenty for a street focused bike.
@scotthogan64954 жыл бұрын
@@zac9933 haha I got ya. Gotta say tho, "no room to store a Grom" is a terrible excuse 😂 I keep mine in my dining room, my brother keeps his in his room! No worries though. But if you're looking for stress-free hooligan riding, the Grom is king. Anyway have fun out there, stay safe 👍

Yes a 400cc can keep up with larger capacity bikes at normal road speeds. A larger capacity bike can make gear selection easier. I guess it could be argued a lower capacity bike will make you a better rider because you need to get the gear selection correct, plus they're cheaper to buy and run. Also they're lighter when you are pushing them in and out of the garage or around a car park. My 1200cc Triumph Speed Twin means I can sometimes be useless at gear selection, so I dunno if that is a good or a bad thing !

You said it when we ride we typically are never going for top end 200mph runs most rides are 40-70mph and the Ninja 400 keeps up just fine shoot I'm 330lbs and had it on my local track to 109mph that's all it had for me but that speaks volumes on what this 400 can do great little bike love mine
@tdizzle76852 жыл бұрын
Just the comment I was looking for. I'm 6-5 310lbs and a beginner so I was looking at this and the r3 but most of the folks I talk to at the dealers point me to the mt07, mt09, or any other larger cc bike saying my size needs the power and the ninja won't do it for me... I'm not trying to be a speed demon but I like the looks of sports and naked bikes but Im also thinking about the fact that I need to respect the power of motorcycles and I know that the larger bikes aren't forgiving like the lower cc's can be if I make a mistake. Did u ever get the urge to get a larger bike or do u still have the ninja?

I agree super fun bike! You can ring it out, go through 3 or 4 gears and still be at the speed limit!

Glad Yammie Noob mentioned not riding like a jackass on a group ride. Group rides can be fun, but if you are a newer rider, or a rider that just doesn't have any interest in going 200 mph all the time, getting in a group ride with crazy jackasses can be dangerous, if you allow your testosterone to override your common sense. In this case, a rider can get him/herself in over their heads extremely quickly, trying to keep up with the Miguel DuHamel wannabe's out there. Folks seem to easily forget that you can be seriously maimed or even killed on these things. They are fun, and riding is one of the best therapeutics I know of, but please wear all of your safety gear and ride responsibly, people. If your group is leaving you behind, and you think you need the newest 1000 or a new Kawasaki Ninja H2 to keep up, you might save yourself some money, and possibly even your life, by just finding a new group to ride with. Just food for thought. God bless.

It's like riding the DRZ400SM. That bike updated with 6spd and FI would be the better bike for a n00b because when you drop it you can just pick it back up and keep riding. The Ninjette has a lot of plastic to break.

Shit yes if it is well ridden. I used to hang with the gsxr750s and 1100s on my gsxr400 up the old pacific highway in the late 80s. You can lean more and carry higher corner speed. Generally better on the brakes too. It had a 220kph top end and a mid 12 sec 1/4 mile so it was plenty fast enough for any riding. And the screen gave wonderful wind and weather protection. It was a great bike.

The 400 is the first one that I've said, this is a bike. Fun fact it has about the same top speed as a 650. Imo don't go for a 300 or 250. If you don't want to feel like you should upgrade soon..
