Matching multiple monitors on a desk is also a good reason to calibrate.. although tweaking by eye will work (but takes a bunch of time). nothing drives me more crazy then having two almost identical monitors on my desk and seeing the grey tones be two or three completely different shades.

Thing is I found out that the cheaper spiderx doesn't actually match the greys across monitors. The twice as expensive one with more of the software unlocked has the feature to match monitors. After buying the cheaper one and found out it didn't fix anything I just learned to live with it.

I calibrated two identical Viewsonic 2468s with the Spyder X Pro. They both looked quite similar, but not 100% exact. So I just made a few after-calibration cheats to the one that I don't use as much, and now they match quite well.

I have barfed a lot looking at the newest television wondering where I am looking at, over saturated colours, no blacks but greys.. whattuhel happened to all those non oled screens from that area!? Was my screen really that good when I bought it!? Even a few of my friends texted me for tv advice for their ps5 since they all like the colours of my screen. Uhm, so how do I read the table? Does an X mean that you got it correct? Or does an X mean that you got it wrong? Because you cross something if it's wrong? Does 0 mean wrong, i.e. getting zero points. Or is zero supposed to represent a circle ○ and your system works like the Japanese notation (○ is right, × is wrong). The strange thing is that both of Anna's charts have three Xs and nine 0s, but you say that she did badly after the media test but got everything correct after the gaming test. 🤨 I would suggest using a less ambiguous notation going forward. For example, using ✓for right and × for wrong avoids confusion. Or just use the letters "r" and "w" as abbreviations for right and wrong.

The reason I calibrate is simply because there is a difference between my left and right monitor that disappears completely after calibration. The brightness is 108 vs 107.9 and then the colors get matched. Basically without it only the brightness is matched and it is noticeable when dragging a screen around. Which causes a headache sometime. (After reinstalling windows for example. My left screen supports DDC/CI so that is calibrated using hardware the right one does not so I have to manually set things and apply a profile.)

It's not a spectrophotometer !!!!!!!! It's a COLORIMETER ! They don't work the same way ! Now let's talk about the differences. I calm down. :zen: Colorimeters use RGB + white for luminance filters. It can reads low lights easely. Spectrophotometers decompose the light completely which lead to a more accurate readings. The colorimeter needs a correction for the display that is done with the spectrophotmeter. Spectrophotometers are not good at low lights readings. That's why a colorimeter is good and it also has faster readings than spectrophotometers. The spectrophotometer needs to be accurate. The accuracy is done via the resolution of its sensor and the quality of the algorithm. The narrower resolutions, the better it is. I think I said the main things. I'm a content consumer and I'm fond of getting the best color possibles !

I used to repair TVs for fun and profit back in the days when it was actually worth doing. I learned what a proper gray scale calibration looked like and how to tune the color guns on a old school crt to get there. Before everyone had calibration tapes or disks I'd tweak each set to show the best looking and accurate color picture I could get out of it. Now that I have ulhd disks and a 4k tv I set it to what my calibration disk shows is accurate and then tweak from there to what I want to see. My pc monitor I set to what I think is right and of course sometimes something looks off and needs adjustments. My TV each input can be individually set to match whatever is feeding it as everything can use different standards or video quality level like 480p 1080p, 4k etc. I like things to look like a high quality 35mm color picture myself. I hate the flat dull look many movie modes give. It should look like whatever the producer was seeing on his screen however he wanted it to look. I'd love to see some calibration tests on older low end monitors too. My monitor is a LG ips monitor, 23", I got a good deal on. My 4k TV is a VA panel with hdr and local dimming so it has nice black levels with a lot of pop, but not so good off angle veiwing. I have a full motion mount for it so we can tweak it till it looks great from my veiwing position. It would be great to find a high quality crt pc monitor and calibrate it too. You could probably find a good one free somewhere now as nobody cares any more and wants a huge lcd screen. My last crt monitor was a 21" Sony and other than the tensioning wires in the screen it looked awesome playing games and weighed a ton. I have to admit text on screen is way easier to read at native resolution on a lcd but other than that video and pictures look great on a quality crt and they don't care about the resolution, it all looks good.

Thank you for taking the time to type up such an awesome comment. I agree that it is really nice to see what the director and cinematographer intended. The dull flat look is not nearly as pleasing. I am very excited for microLED to become a thing, because the compramise between IPS and VA is not ideal. Thanks for all the details about your experience I will see if I can get my hands on a CRT for that kind of test.

I don't want to be picky, but the SpyderX is a colorimeter, not a spectrophotometer. I don't know if the internal lens of the SpyderX can be called spectrophotometer, but calling them that way can be kind of misleading, since spectrophotometer cost is over 10 times the price of this tool.

Most people won't need a calibrator but it depends on your needs. I work as a designer and have a monitor that can store 3 different colour calibrations in it's memory (not software), which is handy for using different computers with it. But back on track. I have set it up to use different Pantone colour books that I use within InDesign and Illustrator so as the colour will be reproduced the same way when it's printed. Also great for photography and video if you're a pro.

But now i can also help my calubrate their monitors or even charge people to calibrate their monitors for a small fee, and i can always resell the device after the calibration.

Anyone who works in retail selling TVs knows that most people are attracted to the brighter display. Did you control for brightness between the calibrated and uncalibrated displays? Colour calibration is only important for consistency between forms of display. A person's opinion between a calibrated or uncalibrated image is a judgment of the colours used in the image/video, not an opinion on its colour accuracy.

Looking for your advice. I purchased a few laptops a couple from Walmart, Target, and Costco. They are basically the same/similar laptops, HP 15.6/14 in the cheaper options with i5, but they have iRisX graphics from Intel. I am not a photographer, but it seems laptops from WM have very much washed-out screens, not saturated dark/black images and much so when looking from the top/side. This is not the case in laptops from Costco/Target. Is it too much gamma? I tried adjusting in Win 11 using the built-in calibrater, but after a bit of adjusting, Win 11 keeps on switching back to the washed/whiter images. What can I use to calibrate and overwrite Windows' presets, and make the changes "stick"? Thank you

I have seen pictures of other setups that looked like there was a color difference between the monitors and wondered if it was just the monitors usage causing difference or just laziness in the setup of the monitors? Additional caveat you are assuming that all panels will look the same at the end but you don't know how much of the colour spectrum the monitors are able to provide I.E you can't expect a monitor that covers 82% of sRGB to look as good as a monitor than can cover 99% sRGB as it does not have the ability to reproduce all of the colours so it can look the same. That also will transfer across VA, WA, IPS and OLED as each of them can only produce the colour spectrum to a certain degree. My other question is how well does this spider device get on with 10bit colour?

I calibrate my work monitor (I produce social media content for a big govt agency) and even though my SpyderX Pro is in my car at the moment, I wouldn't bother calibrating my home PC. I wouldn't bother with my work one either if there weren't 10 other calibrated monitors in my office that would look slightly different. If you open explorer or a white/grey/black web page, your eyes will adjust and see it as white. Everything else adjusts relative to that. People say if you have (for example) a green shift, you'll produce content where the greens are under-represented. But your eyes will adjust. In extreme colour shift cases it makes sense. Anyone with an RGB mouse, keyboard, tower or even tungsten/fluro lighting in their workspace is wasting time and money using a calibrator.

Since i can't find a follow up video on this the answer is yes, it makes a huge difference on lower end and older monitors, while it won't be good enough for professional work (because there's only so much you can do with a low end monitor without proper OSD calibration options) it is night and day compared to factory defaults, my eight year old ASUS 1080p 144hz TN panel monitor gets comparable results to my much newer VA Samsung monitor, as in it's not a night and day difference outside of the panel specific characteristics, granted it's a low-mid range G5 which i got pretty cheap to hold me over for a sale on a G7. That said it probably wouldn't be worth spending the money on a calibrator for a low end monitor unless you can get it cheap, like an old Spyder 4 or something which works great with DisplayCal (which is free), personally i don't think the software for Spyder 4 produces a good result but it might have gotten better since last i tried it.

Not just that a noob can't, nobody can. That's why professional designers need test tools. The consumer can't either, I don't see why anyone worries about it. We're designing for robots

if a content creator is using a calibrated monitor to create, but the consumer is using an uncalibrated monitor to consume that content, why would it matter if the creator used a calibrated monitor at all? since the consumer is seeing it on whatever setting they have anyway. just curious. I just game but I have always calibrated mine, cause like you said the creator of the content was more than likely using a calibrated monitor, so I would like to experience it like the creator intended me to.

i always find the idea that only certain people need calibrated monitors odd. Why shouldn't everyone want a monitor that displays colors correctly? After all, what do you think your iPhone does automatically? It adjusts white balance and brightness/contrast for you automatically depending on the lighting condition. Monitors should do the same thing.

Nice video but the results tables are really confusing. One thing I would like to ask is why Anna prefer the uncalibrated monitor more.

I'm interested in seeing that calibration of an old monitor. I would also like to see if you can compare some tools to calibrate monitors at different price point, just to see if some cheaper one are still doing an ok job.

I need to calibrate my eyeballs. PS: Calibration is critical for "looking at pictures." Gotta have those natural skin tones. PSS: On a more serious note, I recommend trying out DisplayCAL calibration software, even if you're using a Datacolor Spyder. It seems to have more consistent results, and it has more customization options (more gamma curves, black crush fixes, etc).

I’m interested in your follow up video as I have VA panel. I would also like your opinions on the use of the OEM calibration software vs a 3rd party software. The Amazon reviews make it sound like the software provided by Datacolor is garbage. Thank you!

I work with calibrating tvs and sometimes the calibration is the difference between grass being neon green and looking normal. Definitely do the cheap monitor calibration. I know tvs are mostly VA and IPS but still.

I think it is okay to play with the look in between the delta e of around 3~. Because also the meters are not perfect. The last way are our eyes. But of you have no idea about calibration trust the meter over your eyes.

it makes a big difference on a monitor/tv that is way off out of the box. i calibrated my TV yesterday and the colors were so wrong that it was not even funny and thats even without a calibration file just basic R G B gain tweaks.
