Welcome to the ultimate Land Rover off-road video!
We’ve got Mat lining up in the new Range Rover V8, and he’s about to face off against the new Defender V8! Now people might naturally assume that the Defender will win this hands down, but these cars are actually more similar than you might think!
Starting with the Range Rover, it’s packing a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 under the bonnet, which is good for 530hp and 750Nm of torque. It’ll come as no surprise that it’s pretty heavy, weighing in at 2,510kg, but then again it is packing a whole load of kit to help it traverse this off-road course, including air suspension, AWD as well as front & rear diffs.
Naturally, the Defender comes with similar off-road capabilities, but under its bonnet, you’ll find a 5-litre supercharged V8! As a result, the Defender is able to put down 525hp and 625Nm. It’s also slightly heavier than the Range Rover, coming in at just over 2,600kg.
Finally, we have the price, and neither of them are cheap! While the Defender costs £111,000, the Range Rover costs an eye-watering £138,000!
But which is better off-road? Will the Defender edge it? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S DO THIS!

I can't say which one of those cars performed better, because you both made mistakes, so it's really not possible to say which was better. My advice is to set up both cars in the same way, then we could know something more, perhaps. I know Mat that you always want to win, but it doesn't work always like that 😄 Thanks for the video.

For off road a normal Defender would be better. The V8 seems to be set up for on road stability at the small expense of off road prowess. Day to day you'd want a Range Rover though since it will be far more quiet and refined. Not that a Defender isn't.

A suggestion for a way to set up the scoring system, how about each cars start at the maximum amout of points for all the challenges and the aim is to work their way down so that by the end of it all we can easily tell which car did everything flawlessly(assuming a car had no points at the end of it all) and that way we can compare it to other cars that weren't in the same video as lower points are easier to remember than higher ones cause we dont know what the upper limit is. I agree with the comments that both cars should've been using the same settings for the tests for an accurate comparison. That said if the tests were harder perhaps the defenders more aggressive departure angle would've given it the edge. I definitely enjoyed seeing it blasting up the hill on the last challenge. Qn is does the defender have a fridge in the arm rest.

Love your videos, pretty much all about it. Today, however, I found something off for the very first time ever: Normally, if you do drag races in a straight line, if a driver did an obvious mistake during launch, or some system wasn't hooked up properly, you always repeat the race and do a 2 out of 3. Would have LOVED to see an even comparison up- and downhill with really ALL systems activated properly in both cars. Too bad, missed chance for an epic comparison... Maybe you apply the same standards to all your different competitions and comparisons ;) Anyway, thanks for all the great content!!

So good to see a tied result. Both come from the same stable so it all depends on what you are wanting to do with them. Obviously if you want to bush bash, go with the Defender as you are not so concerned with the body work. If you live in town with just the odd 4WD use then the Range Rover. However the RR would certainly give other SUVs and 4WD a run for their money which may surprise the opposition, while the Defender could show a clean pair of heals to the 'townies' wagons. A great comparison.

You *DO* get instant torque with a supercharger, more so than with a turbo. Nick was just sleeping at the wheel the whole video.

Your are correct about Superchargers delivering nearly instant torque and power. A Turbo has to spool up a bit & it S#its where it eats... Turbo'd engines are better at getting spooled up better now than in the 90's and 2000's but a Supercharger is nearly instant. My 14.5 V8Supercharged "Tuned" is sick in acceleration. Both Rovers looked about dead even "Off-Road"... I'd be proud to own either of them.

Interestingly I work on these cars for a living and the suspension on the defender is very different, the defenders suspension is fairly similar to that on a Range Rover sport although it doesn’t have the same clever anti roll bars which help with articulation as they can be disconnected electronically, whereas the defender has old fashioned fixed anti roll bars therefore reducing articulation, they also don’t drive anything like a Range Rover although they’re pretty good still

Defender should win. The smooth tracks in the comparison don't let the Defender shine. Conditions that challenge approach and departure would show a different picture. Some decent tires would make both of them more capable. I've offroaded in a convoy with a stock defender (but with better tires), and it handled some very challenging terrain (obstacles rated red on a green/blue/red scale). It is shockingly capable. The Range Rover appears much wider, which also makes a big difference on many trails in our area.

Which one wins!? depends on your pocket. when they are both have the same drivetrain, its up to ur tasting on the shape size, style, etc.. but i personally go for the rangey, even tho i cant afford it. but thats my shape 😁

Im curious how theyll hold up for reliability in 10 years, and what the cost to keep on the road will be at that point. My £3k 15 year old disco 3 is still rolling and minimal repair costs so far.
