As well as being genuinely funny, the roleplaying that the instructor takes on is a really important lesson for the test that the assessors really are just random people you've just met who may have a variety of personalities that you're going to have to deal with, get used to their quirks, and drive the best you can regardless. edit: also, the head synchronisation from 5:03 is VERY cute

Thank you to Ewan for agreeing to share this online. Also for actually going through with this mock test at all - his body language allowed me to see he's really tense about it, just as I was when I was taking a driving test. In fact I had to do a couple retries precisely because of tension and nervousness. Might have been even more intense for him as a driver of several years, it's not easy to face one's weaknesses or bad habits. Kudos, Ewan. Wish you a lot of growth in your life.

Well done Ewan for coming forward and having a go, you're largely a good driver. I think you rush things a bit, better planning at your junctions and roundabouts. I was a Community Nurse and a visit to somebodies home would sometimes turn out to be not as straightforward as it was meant to be which held me up, that me feel under pressure to get along to the next call, but it can't be helped just carry on at the best driving you can do. Sorry to hear you had an accident, they're not pleasant. Richard will help you out, and good luck for your future.
@Hugh_de_Mortimer11 ай бұрын
It's evident from the video and from what Richard has said, Ewan is a competent driver with good skill, but it's an issue with rushing and trusting that something will work out without going into it without knowing that it shall. Good feedback and I think all of us are a little guilty of this too so really relevant feedback for everyone to take onboard. Cheers. Richard.

I think I can only repeat what other viewer's comments have said already. First of all, aside from being extremely precise, clear and convincing in the explanations given, and exceptionally well put together, these mock test videos are absolute gems because of the unique idea of impersonating an imaginary examiner. For the viewers, it makes for great watching and, I think, also for the person being examined it introduces an unlikely, but very clever and helpful combination: on one hand, Richard "disappears" and there is this unfamiliar, distanced guy, who, contrary to Richard, may not be so interested in you doing well, which makes you know you really need to focus on your job; but on the other hand, Richard's acting and his invented, somewhat whacky characters in the role of the examiner must be a little funny for those examined as well, and it's always good to start things in a good mood and a little relaxed by a bit of humour. The second thing I wanted to mention is, obviously, my massive admiration for Ewan. What an amazing guy! Such humbleness! He's so unassuming! I'm sure he's doing the best he can to drive well and to be as safe a road user as he can be, but since he's had some minor accidents, he decided to spend time and put himself out to public scrutiny simply for the opportunity to get a professional assesment of his driving. I don't want to get too mushy, but if someone is not deeply impressed with such an attitude, then I don't know what will impress them. Thank you to you both, Richard and Ewan, and all the best to you, Ewan!

Hi Richard. I send all my pupils to your channel. So much good info and detail. 8 minutes in I would like to have seen you pick up that when he turned left at a giveway line he spent the whole time looking right. There is a bus stopped on the other side of the road with vehicles overtaking. He heeds to know it is safe where he is going. Another sign of an experienced driving rushing. Looking to see a gap and not caring enough about where they are going. I liked the oads honesty that he says he gets beeped a lot by other drivers, a sure sign he is being a problem to them. Fair play that you gave him and he he took this opportunity to to improve.

10:40 I agree, but this kind of thing feels so hard to do properly after you've gotten your license. I get these situations quite often where I live and I try to be safe and go slow, but immediately people will start honking and going insane behind you because you're not driving at the speed limit, leading to some quite dangerous overtaking and stress... And very often when you see people loading up things into cars like that, there could very likely be a child on the other side of the car. I had a bit if a scare one time that made me pass these things more slowly again when a child suddenly walks out from behind the car and almost into the street... Sometimes I feel like one of the biggest challenges in driving properly is not getting pressured into disregarding safety from the cars behind you. I suppose I just have to grow thicker skin and not let the honking and rude gestures bother me lol
@ConquerDriving Жыл бұрын
An important lesson I give as an instructor is to make sure my pupils do things in their own time and not respond to pressure. Making them aware of the pressure and explaining that it's normal and they can't please everyone, usually helps. Driving safely will annoy some people.

Would you allow for it to happen until in the road where its safe to brake for them? Would you brake on the roundabout or perhaps get involved with the steering before its too late? A pet peve of mine (and most pedestrians) is cars failing to signal at roundabouts. It's not just a difficulty for cars waiting to go, but on many roundabouts the pedestrian is expected to cross whenever there is a gap. You rely on cars being decent signallers and indicating (or not) to let you know if they are going to be crossing. People do get hit (or very close calls) by running across expecting a car to continue around the roundabout because a car has failed to signall left on exit. Should pedestrians wait? Well, given how busy some roundabouts can be, there really is often no choice! Given how fast a car goes around a roundabout that split second choice to take a gap or leave it would be much safer if all cars signalled correctly!

Huh.. This video made me feel much more confident that I would not have as many problems in a driving exam (even under UK standards) as I first thought I would. The way my father taught me (after I got my license) on first gear was that I would only really use it when starting from a stop or when going extremely slowly. And honestly... First time hearing anyone would use the handbrake at a traffic stop. I would never do that unless it's a relatively sharp incline so as to not tire out my foot due to more force needed to maintain the car stopped. In regards to attitude. I noticed that since I am driving a whole lot less ever since the pandemic started I started to ask my wife to get out to call out if I get too close to another car in situations where I used to be dead certain I head plenty of room (and she does call out that there is plenty of room quite often recently) so I would agree that delivery drivers are probably incetivized to drive in a way that is less safe.

I'm only just over 12 minutes into the video but I saw two roundabouts where he goes straight ahead without signalling, although it was a first exit at 12 o'clock - and Richard criticised him for both . I thought you didn't need to signal if you're going straight in a roundabout? Or does that only apply when it's the second exit and is also at 12 o'clock? I'm asking because my test is coming soon as well.
@upen1566 Жыл бұрын
When going straight you don't need signal on entry but need left signal on your exit.
