I have interviewed several Kei Truck owners of various manufacturers, and the appeal of the mini truck is it's utility and conservation of size. 90 percent of the time Truck owners are using their trucks as cars and wasting all of that size and gas. Using the Kei Truck for deliveries in cities and most jobs on farms and job sites would be a huge cost benefit. Further, using Trucks on the Kei platform allows for greater storage and maneuverability. We swapped out most of the F150s for Mules. Kei trucks are a better solution than going Electric and offer foul weather protection that the Mules didn't, plus they are cheaper and cute too.

I put on a 2 inch lift kit, progressive front springs, and slightly larger tires which helps greatly with clearance. I also have gone to the wrong side to get in more times than I can count. The other challenge is when I turn on the wipers when intending to put on the turning signal. LOL! It is a great little truck for the right applications. I was stationed in Japan for two years. Had a 1992 Honda Prelude Si 5-spd the 2nd year I was there. I was confused why the wiper and turn signal stalks were reversed for seemingly no good reason. Then it struck me one day. The turn signal stalk can be used by the hand that doesn't operate the shifter. The thought is that you are more likely to need to use the turn signals while shifting than the wipers. If you need to shift and change the wiper setting, well the wipers can wait until you are done shifting. If you need to shift and use the turn signal you may need to do both at the same time. Other easy way to remember is wipers inside and turn signals outside. Hope it helps. Also the first month I was driving in Japan every time I was turning through an intersection I said to myself in my head "on the left, on the left, on the left" until I was through the intersection.

I have zero interest in lifting things in and out of a bed that is shoulder high all day long. I looked at houses in the 90's that were selling for 125k. I am talking new built homes on half to 1 acre lots.

When you put an American truck and a light truck side by side, you can't help but laugh at the difference in size. As many people have commented, light trucks are trucks made for Japanese farmers. If you are helping farmers on American farms, you must be happy.

最大積載量=Maximum loading capacity≒payload The sticker on the car body says "Maximum load capacity 350kg" It is posted in accordance with the Japanese Vehicle Transportation Law. Penalties will apply if you load more than 350kg in Japan. However, it is not applicable to Honda Acty that runs in foreign countries. Actual load capacity is higher

You both seemed amazed by the versatility of the “drop gates”, making the Honda into a flat bed. Volkswagen had that with the Transporter pickup and double cab way back in the 1950s… there must be a nice, rust free split window from the mid 60s in Colorado that you could do a segment on.
@noseboop4354 Жыл бұрын
One extra feature they seem to have missed is that you can remove those drop gates from the Acty, just need to unscrew the stopper then the gates just slide out.

I was also suprised by they ... Suprise finding that out. In Europe we have Toyota Dynas that in this video at least, would be a middle ground between the Honda and the Ford and as far as I know, every truck in that category has side drop Gates. I don't know much about these vehicles though.

One possible reason for the popularity of small trucks in Japan is that most of Japan's farm roads were built before the spread of cars, when walking was the norm as a means of transportation. They are hundreds or even thousands of years old, and because they are village-based, the roads are very narrow. Because it was enough if people and oxen and horses could walk. It is based on pre-industrial roads. And 70% of Japan is mountainous. I think this is one of the main reasons.

Indeed so !! Such a suscinct and well distilled summary of historical knowledge, ...is admirably well written to explain often overlooked, or widely unknown reasonings behind rhingssuch as Kei vehicles and Japanese small single track roads 🤗😁🎉 +10 cookies!!🤩 When considering that some of the bile that a few other commentators are trying to infer, incite and spread. ...probably because they have for decades purchased massive pickups and lots of ATV's based types of utility vehicles, racked lots of excessive debts & costs, are thusly highly economically jealous, frusttrated and likely partially xenophobic too, because of their profound egotesticalism and incredibly pendulous foreheads acting as blinkers upon there eyes. 😳😜🧐

I'm with every one here that honda accty is actually very useful especially stuff the work site, farm site and every where else you have a right nanuvering area. With the trusting Cody of utv's going over 20k-50k and trucks hitting 70k for a decent model new, having something like this that costs 5k is a steal especially since David already said what we were thinking . Id buy this for a work site , cheap, easy to maintain not going to kill you on gas and is not going to murder your bank account either! Id love to see if Dave can put a small lift on it and some all terrain tires

you can buy 36 of those used Kei Trucks for the cost of that Super Duty, and Toyota just announced their new $10-$12k truck that also won't be available in the USA. All kinds of options, different size truck beds, dual rears, more HP, etc. gas and diesel options, dumping beds, dual cabs, auto and manual trans. options, bigger engines, much faster, same fold down sides, tailgate, and more options. This is areal work truck!

So I have a $100k F250 Supercrew King Ranch and I own a 30 acre hobby farm in East Texas. The F250 is overkill for my little ranch and I don't want to damage it or scratch it up. I had an old F150 out there for a few years and it was a bit more trouble than it was worth. I sold the old pickup and started a search for some sort of utility vehicle and discovered how ridiculous the prices for SxS are nowadays, like $20k. I decided to look at the Kei mini trucks and am importing a 1998 Subaru Sambar, with 35k miles 4WD and A/C, directly from Japan for less than $5k. These are dead simple machines and should be easy to work on, especially the Sambar with its engine in the rear.

As a person who has access to a bunch of property that we sometimes get firewood or bring people out to view the nature. My in laws have an older Kubota UTV that has been great for this but it’s not great for the cold or if you need to really load the bed. I have been looking at these Hondas, Suzukis or even the HiJets for this use not to mention to go places my F150 won’t fit. Unfortunately most of these models are going up in price here in the foothills of the Adirondacks. A local Honda is asking for 8-10K and is the same year condition as yours. I keep my eyes peeled for a user.

We run a Daihatsu Hijet KEI truck on our farm instead of a side-by-side. It is far more versatile and actually more economical on fuel. Ours has the hydraulic dump bed which is incredibly useful. The Hijet has on demand 4WD, dual range and a rear locking diff, we added a 2" lift so we can run 22" ATV tyres in winter, rears are 11" wide. The real advantage is in it's incredibly low centre of gravity. We can cross a 45º side slope, then climb up and down it. Truely the most useful vehicle we run and the one that makes everyone grin. It constantly surprises with it's capability, so we call it "the little truck that can."

I live in Taiwan, and little work trucks just like this Acty are all over the place, in many models and configurations, getting real work done! From the Mitsubishi Delica to the Toyota Zace, those little trucks are the backbone of this country. Back home I own a 1990 Mazda B2200 and I have done so much work with that little truck. It's so convenient for hauling and such, you really can't beat it. I'd take an old school, purpose-built work truck over some silly road queen any day! The Japanese really do understand simplicity, functionality, and reliability in a way we could learn from.

Suzuki pickup owner here we've had our mini truck for 14years now and the only things i've change throughout the years was the tires the brake and the oil🤣 its tough even when fully loaded beyond its recommended capacity like twice the capacity all we have change is a new set of all terrain tires and add a few more leaf springs to make the height higher and so that it can have more loading capability and we pretty much use it for delivering soft drinks like pepsi

Or you can have some of the small trucks we have here in Asia. Same philosophy as the kei trucks, but larger and stronger, just large and strong enough to carry 2-4x more, but still much smaller than every other pickup on sale in the US so far I'll bet, and has enough power for better road use with a 1.0L to 1.6L engines (and if you need it, some has diesel engines), and only costs a little bit more than a 660cc kei truck.

I have a 4wd, 4 wheel independent suspension truck that carries 1/2 ton and more in any weather. It hardly leaves a mark on the ground when going off-road, because of its light weight and it goes places full sized trucks cannot. The bed height is ergonomically sensible and approachable from three sides. The bed is wider than most full size American made pickups, allowing me to transport an 800 lb. golf cart, a 600 lb., 60" Kubota snow blower, a cubic yard of topsoil and just about anything else I have ever needed to transport. It averages 38 mpg. It will easily attain 70+ mph, so it is good on the highways and freeways. The 14" tires I run are very affordable and last a very long time, because of the light weight of the vehicle. It happily runs on the lowest octane gas I can find. It take 3 quarts of oil to do an oil change. The EFI, supercharged, 4 cylinder engine eagerly revs to over 7000 rpm, making 52 hp. I drive a Subaru Sambar, owned and operated since 2005. I bought the used truck with 25k miles on it, for $8500. My liability and uninsured motorist insurance coverage for all of 2024 is $356.

That Honda makes me wonder how the Honda Ridgeline would do out there doing the same tasks. I think the bed is a little smaller but would still fit the bale of hay and it has a lot more payload. Maybe if y’all can get one take it out there
@dreadred92 Жыл бұрын
The main strike against the Ridgeline is the wheel base. Half of your payload potentially is hanging behind the rear wheels, with the Acty the rear wheels are almost to the back of the bed

The max payload on those are limited to 350kg by law but a lot of companies just slap on that sticker and just say it’s the capacity. You can load those things up. If you upgrade the brakes you can take a lot more if you don’t flip it lol

Kei truck used to be so cheap in Japan that if you become good friends with Japanese farmer, they will sell it to you for $500 or sometimes give you for free with a few labor. It was kind of vehicle that you can leave it in the farm over night with key in it since even a thief doesn't find any value to it. Well not any more.

Modern trucks are just so big for bigness sake that it gets kind of comical. I'd much rather have that little truck with some better offroad tires for a farm. Small, light-weight, easy on gas, big enough for a bale of hay (which is all the big truck could fit), and a low-gear 4x4 billy goat mode sounds like a great work truck. Certainly a fine daily drive for the farm until you need something bigger. Reminds me of when trucks were meant to work before Dodge started the bigness wars in the late 90s. Maybe a good follow up video would be what can you do for $1000 to upgrade the mini truck? New tires, some sort of short lift, etc.

Honestly a lift kit and some bigger tires would have made that already extremely useful little truck perfect for field work like that. I'd love one of those things.
