Can Amazon Basics or Harbor Freight's CR2032 Lithium coin cell battery perform as well, or last longer than Energizer or Duracell brand? Find out in this video!
Electronic Load Tester: amzn.to/2Vl0K7o
Internal Resistance Meter: bit.ly/39X1SSo
(Amazon & Banggood Affiliate Links)
DISCLAIMER: Test results can vary based on different testing methods/testing equipment, or if using very low levels of pulsed current, instead of a constant current drain. The test results are for electronic devices/LED's that draw more current than the typical current drain for a CR2032, and there are many out there. Based on the testing results, I gave my opinion as to which CR2032 lasts the longest.

just take a 12 volt ac charge cable or any plug really and make a wire harness with leads off so +/- then touch the batteries on the correct polarity for a few seconds while checking voltage and temperature of batteries but they recharge just fine multiple times I've found you can bring back to life dead 18650s with this method as well.

I'd love to see more 2032 tests. What I've found is that battery to battery variance even within the same brand and batch is high. And that the variance from batch to batch seems to matter more than brand. Basically, it seems that storage before it arrives in your hands is a bigger factor than brand.

One of the biggest things to keep in mind with Harbor Freight is that they are liable to change their suppliers without changing the packaging or part numbers, so the quality may not always be the same every time you purchase something. This happens a lot with their power tools and wrenches.

I've just left the same comment. Harbor Freight won't be interested in specifications as they change their Chinese suppliers. You never know what you're going to get and never know when the supplier has been changed.

I got low battery signal for my Honda key, and purchased Harbor Freight CR2032 battery based on this review. Just a couple of month later, I got low battery again. I still have another 3 left, all the them immediately give me low battery after installing. I checked the voltage, the one used for a couple of months now only has 3.0V, the 3 new ones have 3.27-3.28V. I had a very old non-brand CR2032, purchased from ebay long time back. The initial voltage is 3.30V. Now, the non-brand one is temporary installed on the key (it does not give me low battery warning). I also placed an order on ebay to buy some Toshiba ones based on another review. Hopefully, the Toshiba ones perform like what the other youtube reviewer tested.

One thing you have to be careful about, the Harbor Freight batteries, if you are buying the larger cells, C, D, AA, and AAA, they sell a heavy duty as well as alkaline. The heavy duty are the old carbon technology and won't even begin to perform like an alkaline. Read the label, if it says heavy duty, no matter what brand don't buy it!

Your video is such a breath of fresh air because you have sound testing methodology and explain all of your tests, whereas every other source on the internet I've encountered was just a list with generic marketing terms. Anyway, this video is absolutely invaluable for making decisions for 2032-powered EL Wire projects! I'm making some wearable EL Wire costume pieces and knowing how the coin cells perform under a much larger load (1.5 watts per meter of wire) than the manufacturer's testing is a primary concern.

I probably use over 100 of them a year but it's mostly for stuff from the '80s and '90s... replacing SRAM batteries in old game cartridges and memory paks/memory cards, replacing RTC batteries in Game Boy games and game consoles, converting from tabbed ML2032 rechargeables to socketed CR2032 disposables, etc. Only occasionally do I need them for some modern remote or key fob, so I definitely don't think of them as "becoming" widely used as opposed to been widely used for decades in devices where they were expected to outlast the useful life of the product. ;)

@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 2 жыл бұрын
@@RideRedRacer You might think that, but the few dedicated enough to still play Dreamcast disconnect it between sessions and often don’t play enough to keep it charged. Every time they break it out they find it lost the time, language settings, etc preventing them from jumping straight into the game. Also, the rechargeable has typically gone bad from too many short cycles or disuse. Similarly I had to replace the rechargeable clock battery inside a “ThinkWare” dashcam because it would lose the date and time then keep recording over the same “January 1, 1970” footage over and over again… causing me to lose footage of a thief. It does this even though it sets the time and date from GPS every drive and has two other power sources to maintain the time while parked (car power + Li-Ion). I found reports of that problem as soon as 18 months after the unit was made in 2016. They literally would’ve been better off with a non-rechargeable when they wear out that quick and undermine the entire purpose of the device! I found the component was also used in a Seiko watch where I’m sure it lasts much longer.

Thorough testing! I usually buy CR2032s and others from AliExpress. They will cost less than $0.20 a piece including shipping. Panasonic, Sony or Chinese. I haven’t tested them (just used them) and haven’t noticed any difference compared to ones I buy in a shop in here in Europe. Last 2 years AliExpress doesn’t allow counterfeit parts anymore so there’s a good chance (but not 100%) that you get genuine batteries.

@@electronicsNmore You're probably right, but if nothing else, your video did demonstrate that one's intuition of how things will work is not always correct. I don't know if would have much impact on the performance of the devices using the battery, but it would be interesting to see a curve illustrating the rate of the voltage drop off. Anyway, thanks for the video, it was interesting.

I think Harbor Freight underrated their battery because they are a low turnover item that sits on a shelf for ages before being sold. I would like to see you repeat the test and take the average for 3 cells of each brand and don't purchase two of any given source from the same store. That might prove difficult for Amazon and Harbor Freight so purchase them online at least 2 weeks apart and chances are you will get calls from different lots.

Lok Tom Because quarters are bimetal, the static electricity produced from brushing the carpet is stored like a capacitor between the layers of the metal. Conveniently, this produces almost exactly 3 volts. Amperage may very. If it doesn't work the first time, you may need a different quarter. Alternatively, you can raise the energy potential by running the quarter under hot water to allow the electrons to flow better.

One thing that Is really important about button cell batteries, never handle them with your bare hands. Your fingerprints leave behind oils and acids which attack the metal surface and create resistance. The small button cells are very sensitive to this, so always handle them with clean cotton gloves or a clean tissue. If you touch them with bare skin clean them off with alcohol. This advice applies to watch batteries also. I learned this reading the training materials from Renata, a battery watch maker, this advice is right out of their training materials on changing watch batteries. I worked in the jewelry business and we sold a lot of watches and replaced a lot of batteries, after watching a lot of store employees putting their fingerprints all over watch batteries I never let anyone change my watch batteries but me, believe me, it DOES make a big difference.

@@electronicsNmore There are a lot of watch batteries and car remote batteries that get replaced when all they needed was their contacts and battery cleaned off. A neighbor thought his car remote battery was shot, it didn't unlock his doors anymore, I took it and cleaned the battery surface and contacts with rubbing alcohol, that battery lasted another 2 years. It happens all the time.

Another excellent test/evaluation. Glad to see the note about watching the ads. It is a way to help the channel if one is tapped out with Patreon, etc. KZbin is cagey about what counts as an ad “view”, but I have seen a couple of sources that say 30 seconds of an that is that length or longer counts. (Some of them are minutes long, so that is important. My compromise is the 30 second rule on the first ad, usually skip the second unless it is short. There is a price to be paid: in my case a seemingly endless sequence of ads for really stupid arcade phone games. But “free” content needs to be paid for somehow.
