Fishplate, probably dirived from fissure plate, as in: a cover/ coupling over a fissure, crack or gap.

The word Fishplate derives from an old verb 'fish' meaning 'mend', itself probably from French 'ficher' 'to fix'. A fishplate is therefore really a 'fix-plate'. Dictionary of True Etymologies by Adrian Bloom.
