It’s certainly easier to make assumptions about people than it is to spend time getting to know someone. We wanted to put assumptions to the test to see what we're missing out on because we're so busy assuming we already "know" a person. Join us as we discover why you should never judge a book by it’s cover in our new series, Tell My Story.
We are all conditioned with certain biases. In this experiment, we challenged these biases by asking people to make assumptions about their partner's appearance without ever actually seeing their partner. When they flipped around to finally face each other, they were shocked by how wrong they were.

People assume I'm from a wealthy family because I'm a doctor, when I actually grew up with little to no money, because my single mother was always barely scraping by. A lot of patients start sentences like "You don't know what it's like to have no money/to depend on unemployment benefits".

SoulPancake always depends on the person I'm talking to. Sometimes I correct them and tell them, that I actually know quite well what it's like, but that I myself am an example that you can get beyond what was given to you and rise to the challenge. Most people get really embarrassed and are sorry about their judgement. In other cases I say nothing because it wouldn't help the conversation and just try to remember not to judge others like that, wether it's a positive or negative assumption. Somehow my own past is a constant reminder not to be too quick judging others.

I honestly don't know, most of the time I grew up my mother was unemployed, if she had a job it was mostly only for a short time. I'm my mother's only child, but my father has other children and as far as I know still no steady job, so there was no alimony for us. I don't talk to either of them today for a bunch of different reasons, so I couldn't even ask if I wanted. It was a rough ride, growing up and being a first generation student, always working after classes, night shifts and all, but I would do it all over again. I love what I do for a living which is something none of my parents ever did. I really appreciate where all the struggle took me, I still look into the fridge today and am happy, amazed and so thankful that it's full of food.

I love this project because it takes away the shame from making assumptions about people (because we all do it, it's human) especially those we don't know AND encourages to don't give this prejudice a lot of power and look behind the cover.

People assume that because I'm a white, freckle faced, red head that I don't know anything about racism. I get the, "You couldn't possibly understand" line. They have no idea that I grew up dirt poor, on the wrong side of the tracks in a town that was primarily populated by black people. It was not unusual to get jumped for being white and I was punked at school A LOT. The irony is that the kids at school assumed being white meant that I had money and didn't struggle financially like they did. Some of them even outwardly blamed me for their problems as if I represented my entire race and my race was to blame somehow. One girl that jumped me said that "My people enslaved her people". I was wishing that "my people" would show up and get her the hell away from me. I'm glad that I was able to get out of there when I turned 18. Racism sucks but you can't' blame other people for your life. We all have ups and downs and life is not always fair.

throughout my entire high school life i've always had people assume i was a drug dealer or a total stoner and that i was super mean and hateful. this was after moving 5 hours away from where i grew up to a new school with people who were different from me. i would always have people come up to me after i would do projects with them or after we've been friends a while and say "you know i always thought you were gonna be really mean and scary but you're the nicest guy i've met". i typically wear all black, from head to toe. usually black snapback worn backwards, black tshirt with a metal band logo on it somewhere, black skinnies and black vans with black socks. occasionally a black hoodie too (at the time would be a hand me down hoodie or something from value village). i usually listened to metal and would listen to it pretty loud, i was quiet and played bass in the school band. i always put others before me and i love and care for everyone in my life unconditionally. my dreams of making music and influencing others to change the world is slowly becoming a reality and i'm hoping to eventually start up my own clothing brand. and i still smoke hella dank weed too.

People usually assume 1) I'm much younger than I am (people usually guess 16 or 17, but I'm 24), 2) that I come from a wealthy family (I remember being called "little rich girl" at work when I was 17 because I had a car, but I had paid for that car myself with money I received in a settlement after a car accident I was in as a child) but I actually came from a single parent household and we never had a lot, just enough to get by, and that 3) I had a very comprehensive education based on my ability to speak well and my outgoing nature, but I was actually homeschooled all twelve years!

I deal with assumptions daily as a man of Swedish/Finnish/Swiss heritage who lives in México. Most common are the people who assume I am a tourist or I don’t speak Spanish. Often these people were born after I first immigrated to México 39 years ago, so I have spoken Spanish longer than they have.
