Jamel Holloway at OU in 1985. True freshman to a NC. Avery is cool headed. He will have major highlights this year.

With NIL and the exposure these kids are getting now days they are more mature and ready for the spotlight that comes with being a star!?!? This is also showing on the professional level also. Look at Strouds rookie season and Williams debut with the bears!!! I believe that Kansas State has made a great decision and it's going to pay great dividends this year and years to come!!!

Last time KState replaced a coordinator (defensive), things only improved

O line has dudes with game experience- Offensive coordinator change is a non-issue, & in fact will turn out to be a good thing.

@@bige2012 Yeah, not that new: 4 senior starters projected, all of whom have multiple years of experience because we rotate linemen a lot. I do NOT worry about Conor Riley's unit, ever.

I'm sure plenty of KSU fans are drinking the Kool-Aid on this young fellow and maybe he will be really good. But the subject line asks basically if Johnson is going to be a great QB that can take the Wildcats to the very top of the conference. Ask yourself this: How often does a first time starter come in at QB and do that? Answer: Almost never. And there is a reason for that. Johnson will barely be in the top half of QBs in the Big XII despite how fast he supposedly is (undoubtedly on a cool dry day without pads and before getting roughed up a half dozen times by guys that outweigh him by 100 pounds).

I disagree he had enough exposure last year to show his promise!!! I believe there's going to be a lot of great things coming from the Wild Cats QB Avery Johnson 😱

I don't care how fast someone said he is on a "cool dry day with no pads on". We already saw his speed and agility on display against TTech and others. That's plenty fast and agile enough to be very effective from a running perspective as well as eluding pressure and avoiding sacks, something Howard was sorely missing. (When Howard got pressure, he had a habit of simply backpedaling and throwing a bad pass or out of bounds. If he got pressure, the play was basically over). The real issue will be how well Avery and the receivers can be on the same page and run scramble drills. I don't see Avery this year as someone who will stand back and pick the defense apart. I think it will be scramble yards, threat of scramble, and keeping the play alive with his legs and finding a receiver. It will also depend on how well DJ and Dylan can hurt defenses in the run game to take pressure off the pass game.

Michael Bishop did it in 1997 and virtually drove us to a national championship game in an era where no mistakes were allowed. It wouldn't even be the first time at K-State. Avery has a lot more margin for error as long as we win the Big 12.

@BracketCat you're right, although he had college experience at Blinn. But yea I think the only loss that year was to a juggernaut Nebraska team. What's sad is we destroyed TAMU that year with a lot of the same players that ended up beating us in the B12 championship.
