Can you fix a terrible 3-phase motherboard VRM by adding better cooling? WIll a cooler power delivery result in better overclocking?

I would say make sure your home insurance covers catastrophic fires and water damage before you do that.. especially if its a super cheap b450 board. And if your life insurance is all paid up try an Aliexpresss super cheap no name "a320" board and see what happens .. just make sure to stretch and keep a clear and open path outdoors for when you have to run for your life 🤣🤣🤣

An OCed 1700 or 2700 would even do the trick. The Asrock X470 mini-ITX board I have has a heatsink and a crappy VRM, and if I push the voltage any higher than 1.43 set in BIOS, it will thermal throttle pretty quickly. HWinfo has a nice way of telling you when you are throttling. It just won't tell you if it's the CPU or the VRM.

Not all 3 phase are bad. The asrock b450m pro4 has a high surface area heatsink, doubled components per phase meaning fairly decent overclocking as long as you don't push the highest voltages, two m.2, 4 dimm and is the best motherboard for like 75-80 imo.

One of tricks I learned while trying to minimise system temps on the cheap was to completely reverse the airflow in the system starting with the rear case fan. Initially I used a peice of card as a baffle to ensure air was being pushed onto, rather than over, the VRM section board but later I worked out I could get much the same effect simply by running the rear case fan at a higher speed than the (reversed) fans on my CPU HSF (which created enough turbulance to splash air back onto the board). That approach would work a treat with one of those heatpipe heatsinks you're using in this video. Btw, I expected that reversed airflow setup to have a negative effect on CPU temps but was suprised find the opposite was true, and I was stunned at just how dramatically temps dropped across the board (pardon the pun,) when I flipped my case upside down (which, after flipping it around to get easier access to the ports, left me with a reversed, reverse-ATX system with reversed airflow. 🤨) The things you do in poorly insulated houses during Australian summers...

Right, I posted on another video yesterday asking about your critique of another VRM setup, so I'm glad I stumbled on this video! I wanted to raise a point-- you're attaching a heatsink to the TOP of the MOSFET package. Most SMD MOSFET packages are attached to large copper planes of the PCB through a metal pad on the BACK of the package. Sometimes you're actually better off attaching heating to the BACK of the PCB to help pull heat away. It would be interesting to try to measure the actual consumed current per MOSFET and figure out the legit current consumption. Then you could actually start to see if these things were really designed well.

"I can't believe Gigabyte didn't think of installing a VRM heatsink on it" Because they didn't make the M68MT-S2 to run a criminally hot FX-8000 series CPU, David. Heck, I don't even think they designed it to run further than a Quad-Core FX at that, and even then with hot results. I have a modified Gigabyte 880GM-UD2H that now runs a FX-4100. I still try to think how on earth did Gigabyte EVER expect this thing to run a Phenom X4 or X6 without downright melting - I've run a round of NFS Hot Pursuit with this 4100 and I nearly got an panic attack at the temperatures after just a single race. Other specs included a R9 280 (aka HD7950) 3GB, about 2x2GB Corsair Dominator and a 320GB HDD, as well as a 700W Raidmax PSU (made by Andyson - this thing is tough as nails, being able to power a R9 280 and a i7 2600k.). The only plus I can think of my board against yours, is the fact that mine sports a 4+1 phase setup, not a 3+1 (which, by the way, sounds incredibly stupid.)

A friend of mine still runs a combo like this, but with a quarter of the FX disable so it doesn't crash. XD I don't think that temperature you monitor is accurate though, with the heat "radiation" (most likely just a convective flow tho) it's probably more like 100 to 120 degrees. Which is also more like the temperature when a VRM is going to throttle itself

Since last video I knew that something was wrong with motherboard. There are no boards for AM3+ CPUs, that support 125 watt chips and don't have heatsinked 3+1 phases or at least naked 4+1 phases. I looked at Giga's website and it seems that board doesn't even officially support anything FX. So, it's likely not supposed to work with FX CPUs and if it does, then it is already strained past its optimal limits. Either switch to Phenom II chip or swap that board, because it is a fire hazard now. Note about AMD chips: Phenom II chips can actually consume more power than FX chips, but there might be difference in their amperages. Also FX chips have more aggressive Turbo modes and they contribute a lot to obnoxiously high power consumption. It might be a good idea to turn off Turbo.

My first gaming PC introduced me to these VRMs. Oh man did my first gaming PC frustrate me. The PC had a Gigabyte F2A68HM-HD2 rev 1.1 motherboard that was paired with an AMD Athlon X4 860K CPU. The VRMs really limited me on it. The best it seemed to do was about 3.9GHz. Overclocking was just a no-go. Even if the CPU was cool, the CPU began throttling down to 1.7GHz because the VRMs just couldn't take it. It really limited what I could get out of that PC. It's what made me end up building my own PC. I really didn't like how badly the manufacturers of that PC skimped on parts. I still have the motherboard and CPU. I am tempted to experiment and try adding some heatsinks to the VRMs to see if that stops the CPU throttling and allows a better overclock. Even though I don't have a need for that PC any more, I am curious to see if adding heatsinks was all it needed.

As bad as bulldozer is pile driver was a vast improvement (at least in my experience but I've had 2 6100's and 2 8350's got about 400mhz more clock on the pile driver CPUs as well as arch improvements) The board probably also has no real way to disable apm as it is a pre FX board which limits the power draw of the cpu to it's tdp disabling turbo in aod also disables apm. Also Possibly a reason why power draw stopped rising in the latter tests as you could see throttling in the afterburner overlay if the footage was form the later tests.

Those FX chips needs a boatload of voltage. In comparison at least to Ryzen or other more modern chips. I have a 6300 I wanna mess with at some point.

I have a similar problem with an FM1 motherboard. Can't really call them VRM's but next to the cpu it will go up to very hot and the pc will reboot itself. So he's upgrading so i told him i want his old pc and i want to get thermal pads and heatsink to see if it works. It just for my own enjoyment.

I've been wondering about this, you can get basic heat sinks for extremely cheap and sometimes that's all the difference between a $45 and $70 motherboard. EDIT: Seems worth $5 of heat sinks from china to get 5fps out of a cheap build.

When a VRM is this bad what is needs it a water block and probably a ice in the res, but you could also try the server solution (Delta PFC0812DE-PWM fan) and DO NOT put that on a MB fan header, use a molex plug IIRC AsRock has a REALLY horrible B450 board if you do get that fan, be sure to get a couple fan grills for it, it is not worth loosing a finger tip

Putting heatsinks on the VRM helps in thermal throttling, especially on warm days. A video render might finish a few minutes earlier if you are a creator. I can see it happing using Psensor and Stress on Linux.

im using a H410 and a i9-10900 non K it pulls 270w sometimes Is there a way to add a heat sink to the VRM on the ASUS Prime H410M-E without damaging the VRM what adhesive to use?

I did run prime 95+occt to draw full power from my psu, my psu has dropped from 12.3V to 11.67V Thus on my Gigabyte B75 D3V, My VRM is on 80-90Celsius while it draws 70Watts to the cpu, but the thermal design is 95Watts. There are only traces on my mobo that cools the mosfets.

I think if you don't add airflow, you are wasting much of the potential of the heatsink, and using it like a rechargeable battery instead... With fan on the vrm without heatsink should still be better. And I am very interested in seeing this 3phase on fan+ heatsink cooling, how much more power it can pull for the hungry FX
