Wow, great job with this! I'm one of the authors on the Nature Communication paper with Greg Wentworth. You made all aspects of the bird-ammonia-particle-cloud-climate system very clear! That is not easy! I'm really impressed, and thank you!
@grossscienceshow7 жыл бұрын
Oh my goodness! That is so great to hear! For the record, Greg was a huge help in making sure I got the science right, so he totally deserves some of the credit. Anyway, thank YOU for doing such awesome research!

theloniuspunkify so would it help the environment if everyone poop in the open air and contribute ammonia for droplets formation. Things you would for science and environment..... No more sewage clogging!!!!
@theloniuspunkify7 жыл бұрын
Good question! Humans pooping in open air probably won't help though. In most places where humans live, the air already has enough ammonia to facilitate particle formation, thus the additional ammonia wouldn't do too much. What's special about the case of the Arctic seabirds is that the Arctic is extremely clean and has very little ammonia in the absence of the emissions from seabird guano. This makes the Arctic (and presumably the Antarctic) a "sweet spot"for adding ammonia to impact particles, clouds, and climate.

don't forget because of the rich minerals in bird poop it was actually used to create explosives. If Transfomers G1 taught me anything, it was this.

Mix bird poop, or even better bat guano with finely crushed fruit loops, light it on fire... And you'll have instant clouds... Of smoke!

Hi Anna, great video as always. Question though: would this process apply to other wastes? Animal or otherwise?
@davidonfim23817 жыл бұрын
Yes. Mammal pee (as well as other animals' wastes) have chemicals that break down into ammonia as well (in the case of mammals, it is urea). You rarely find massive patches of other animals' pee though*, so their contribution to clouds is probably too small to really measure. *roosting bats can make really huge piles of poop/pee, but that's mostly inside caves...
@grossscienceshow7 жыл бұрын
Really good question-I will check with the scientists to see if anyone has studied this with other types of animal waste. As for non-animal waste, yes-things like soot can serve as condensation nuclei.

Kinda of an unrelated question here. What is dog poo made of? It's probably nitrogen poor, right? Every time I'm collecting my dogs poo I wonder if I could do something useful with it, instead of just throwing it away. Thanks!

Does the amount of ammonia in the air have any adverse health effects which would be noticeable (not that I plan on going to the Arctic anytime soon)?
