Can Bowling Balls Absorb Water?

When it comes to reactive resin bowling balls, we know that they can absorb oil into the coverstock material and that's where the hooking performance comes from...
So if a ball can absorb oil, can it absorb water as well? And if so, how does it impact performance? And if it does impact performance, can you extract the water out of a bowling ball the same way as you do oil using heat? Will this bring the original performance back?
I set out to find the answers in this video!

Did the water absorb into the shell, or did it go down the thumb hole and absorb into the 'dynamicore'

Great question. The way to test that would be to submerge an undrilled ball and measure the increase over the same time period. If it’s a lot less, then it absorbed more through the core material.

The shop I used to get my ball cleaned had a oven and a tank that heated up the water. It also was ultrasonic. Not shure if that's better way to get oil out than the oven.

Y’all talked about using the dishwasher the other day. I’ve been doing that for over 20 years I plug the holes and use the heat. Hasn’t negatively affected any ball I have done as a matter of fact they are like new. Hooks like a new ball as well. I also put my bowling balls in those magnum bowling bags. I have a ball spinner as well.

Agree with you on that. Why poison your self potentially. That's what a steam batch in the oven does basically. Set your oven to the lowest temp, add a pan with a lil water. If your ovens lowest temp is 250, you're going to crack the door open, air it out. Use a therm, take the temp once it's 120-130, place the ball, or balls in there. Leave for 15 minutes or so, remove. Wipe, and bam. Detoxed ball.

Hey Nick. Pretty cool experiment. I have another one for you if it hasnt been mentioned already. Try the temperature experiment where you refrigerate the ball and then take it directly to the lanes and throw some shots with Specto. Then, put the ball in the rejuvinator for a bit and then straight to the lanes and throw some shots to show the difference in ball temperature on lane performance. You do get those people that leave their balls in the car regardless of the weather outside. Would be cool to see the difference between a ball at say 50 degrees and the same ball at 100 degrees how different they would be. I realize the temperature would get back to room temperature after a certain amount of time. But wonder if that would be an experiment worth trying.

I de-oil my balls in a bucket of warm water, heated with a sous vide (which keeps the temperature constant and circulates the water too). I plug the thumb hole with a rubber stopper, and have the finger holes vertically up, just above the water line. That way none of the holes are in contact with water and so stay dry. I wonder if Nick had done it this way if the ball would've still absorbed water, instead of submerging all three holes as he did?

I honestly think you should do the test, with fully water logging, then trying to get oil in. Not going to lie. If being water logging doesn't affect the performance; then if water logged balls, can't take oil in, and continue to have the same performance.... You will have literally changed bowling forever. You will have pros/amateurs, etc, soaking their balls for 2 weeks pre tourney. And if this is the case, then.... No dead balls. Balls will last longer, and your sponsor probably doesn't like that.

I've been curious on how to properly clean my balls (that sounds so weird...) at home, without any true bowling tech. Some of the comments got me thinking about when my daughter would forget her ball in the car, and after humility and temperature changes it would discolor or crack into pieces. That was so frustrating! I can laugh about it now, but it also instilled in me to take care of my own. So, mixed messages in the comments aside, what truly is the best/safest way to clean a bowling ball? 🤔
