"How a communication bus is wired determines how you diagnose it!" In the second part of this three part series, we dive deeper into CAN Bus wiring and how to breakdown networks even further. While still taking a real world approach we will discuss the differences in network topology and the protocols used to speak on them.

Part 1 and 2 were both excellent, so thank you. After 35 years in the business, albeit not automotive, I've never heard the term "protocol" used the way you did. CAN was modeled after RS-485, even using the same 120 Ohm characteristic impedance on the differential bus (in most CAN implementations). What you call "protocol", people in my industry call the "physical layer". We make this distinction because the Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) model differentiates seven distinct layers of a "protocol". Above the physical layer is the "data link layer" where the "hardware" addressing part of the occurs, like a MAC address on Ethernet. This is followed by the "network layer" (like an IP address) and so forth. These can all be considered separate "protocols" or all part of one big "protocol". Your emphasis on the wiring topology was excellent and a frequently overlooked part of the diagnostic process. When you grew up before CAN existed and still work on pre-CAN equipment, you naturally did / do this, but too many technicians today just want to use a device--so thank you for emphasizing the basics!

Hello, Thank You! As an automotive instructor, I saw a need for taking this topic and simplifying to a point where new techs can understand it. Most of the current training focuses too much on the 1's and 0's or the attributes of each protocol. High level training even goes into de-coded CAN messages and engineering level commands. While this is great info, it can make the topic intimidating and rarely helps you fix a issue in a automobile. Training young techs, the biggest challenge is getting them to the right spot to test, on the right Bus or section of the network. Problem solving from there can be as simple or complex as they want to make it. Thanks you again for watching the video and reaching out! ~Ryan

Thanks Ryan! I am learning alot and you are taking alot of the confusion out. I understand that these companies are getting more complicated with their systems for security and such. But paying extra for the info we need is getting old. I believe they are wanting you to go to the dealership for repairs and holding their info for this reason. It will be propieritary info. I believe that the forklift industry does this. The days of fixing your own car are slowly going away. I've racked up quite a bit of money just in subscriptions to get info lol. Lets hope we can stick together and keep that from happening. Thanks again!

The configuration breakdown helps to understand what your dealing with. I know SMA Eric O had shown how to break down the system to locate the problem including jumping the wires at the module connector for the pass through testing. Your training gives the basics to build on to make it easier to understand. Before I retired in 2016, I had limited involvement with these systems. Now it seems like that's how these vehicles run, that is, on module communication. Thank you for this video, looking forward to the next one!

And that kids is your introduction to Data Communications 101. Go find a book titled something like; Intro to Data Communications. It will reinforce the good information being shown here. You may continue reading on that subject and quickly find this is what IT guys do in their air conditioned buildings, Khakis with clean hands. They get paid quite a bit more than the Hyundai dealer is offering too. Soon you'll be selling off your Snap-On collection to finance Fluke branded tools. Paid vacations, regular pay and benefits. Yes this is why most shops can't diagnose your car. The sheer volume of knowledge required is worth more than what the dealership is paying. Congratulations on your new career path. Great videos both parts 1 & 2. You're making a complex subject very understandable. - retired IT guy
