Really good and helpful talk. I think you missed out on one important part of why Bosch chose CAN be a bus-topology. In a car, you have dozens to hundreds of CU's from different vendors and as an OEM you want to keep the vendors interchangable. So you need a lot of one-to-many communication, information like board voltage, vehicle speed, tire speed is measured at one node and is communicated with all devices. So for the board voltage example, you could either choose: CAN with one sensor for voltage and a message that is received by 100 nodes. Ethernet with either one sensor on each node or layers of switches with 100 end nodes. I'm certain that Ethernet will be the dominant backbone of a car from now on, but the way CAN work leaves some benefits that Automotive Ethernet needs to fill in.

Just curious, from a technicians standpoint, if canbus and flexray are both a max of 10mb/s is the oscilloscope the issue why we need a specific lead for flexray, whereas with canbus regular scope leads seem to be fine when capturing communication waveforms? Specifically Pico scope. maybe a dumb question, but Ive also had no issues capturing canbus on a slower handheld hantek oscilloscope. FlexRay seems to be the exception and the leads for it are pretty expensive.

CAN FD can hit 10, but normally is not ran that fast. 2M is more common. I have scoped FlexRay with a Pico scope. I have never seen CAN-FD at anything close to 10M.
@alanw5879
@alanw5879 2 жыл бұрын
@@arpanrughani7477 So are these specialized FlexRay leads unnecessary? I read somewhere these leads were needed to view FlexRay waveforms, and I didnt really understand if CAN is the same speed why would we need to speed so much extra on leads you might use once a year.. Does it depend on the Pico Scope model, I mean even the 10Mhz scope should work then.. Maybe Im wrong..
@arpanrughani7477
@arpanrughani7477 2 жыл бұрын
@@alanw5879 If the baud rate is 10M, you would want a faster scope. 10M is 100ns per bit. Sampling at 10Mhz, 100ns per sample. You need more than one sample per Bit. 2 would be a minimum (Nyquist-Shannon Theorem) but realistically you would would 10-100 or more to get a good picture. Flexray is differential, so 2 lines. The more feature filled probes will have some filters and look to do the adding in the probe. So rather than using 2 probes and adding on the scope, which will take twice the samples per second, you can use one channel and more samples per second to get a better picture. Automotive ethernet is a different story, you do need fancy equipment for.
@alanw5879
@alanw5879 2 жыл бұрын
@@arpanrughani7477 ok I see what youre saying, watching CAN bus we have the differential, High and Low so the difference really is the ability to watch both those signals on one lead freeing up another channel as well as some sampling amount. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I appreciate it. I use my scope on as many diags as possible, Its really amazing how much we can do with a scope now for automotive purposes. Never thought Id be able to see a bad head gasket on a scope. cool stuff... Thanks again.
