I love beater cars! I used to have an F body; mine was a 4 door Volare with a 318. It was definitely a beater. I bought it from the company I worked for after it worked its way down from the sales department, to maintenance, to security, and finally to the owner's son who used it like a farm truck. He would basically bring a can of gas and jumper cables when he needed to use it, then leave it out in the field wherever it ran out of the gallon of gas he had put in it. After he finally gave up on it, I bought it cheap and made it my daily driver for a couple of years! I could probably talk for an hour about all the cheap hacks and tricks I did to keep it going on almost no money.
@1980bwc8 ай бұрын
I have a cousin, that's about 20 years older than me, who had a red 1977 Volare, 318 car, back in the early 90's. I was only 9 or 10 years old at the time, but I remember it well. He had it decked out with ALL the Sparkomatic stereo equipment in it. The 6"x9"s, the tape player with an EQ, the amplifier with an EQ, and even the EQ with an EQ. Everything had an EQ back then! 😂 I had forgotten all about that car, until you posted this video. Its cool how when an old song comes on the radio, that you havent heard in forever, and you still know all the lyrics to it. Also, the song instantly brings back all the memories you have, from the exact time period, that you first heard it. Evidently, a vehicle will do the same thing. Thanks for bringin back some great memories, from the "Good Ol' Day's", Christopher!

The Aspen body lines are awfully similar to the Chevy Nova and Buick Skylark of the same period. That alone qualifies it as a cool car 💯

On all F & J bodies, and M-bodies below '88...the engine cradle, which everything is bolted to, was made "Outside the US." Under severe duty and/or salt exposure, the shock mounts crack & collapses, rendering the front end unable to be aligned. It was so well known that Chrysler issued a TSB and a patch kit- don't fix the issue of poor metallurgy, handle it like GM and just fix it right before it's cancelled. Also, get rid of the iso-clamp rubber donuts the cradle sits on as well as wraps the shock mounts on the rear leafs. BTW, I own an '88 M-body cop car presently

When I saw the new rear brake shoes, I thought of a possible helpful tip to share with everybody that I learned too late in life. When replacing rear brake shoes, always un-adjust the parking bake cable, and make sure it is slack, BEFORE adjusting the shoes to the drum then re-adjust parking brake cable LAST... The cables going to rear axle are usually stuck and you have to pry back the lever that attaches the cable to the shoe, back into the shoe. The last guy to "throw on a set of shoes" probably skipped this step and cable adjustment was probably close to maxxed out when he adjusted shoes... Usually when I find this issue on old vehicles I work on, I'll get more turns on the shoe adjusters than I could get before when I re-adjust everything. This always results in less pedal travel, much firmer pedal feel, more shoe surface area being used, less drag when brakes are released, and more stopping power... Anyway, great videos!!!

I had a old Grand Fury cop car just like that diplomat but mine was blue with the HD suspension it came with a 318 that I took out and sold and but in a 360 it had the cop slotted rims too it was a fun car and it was a sleeper I use to kill 5 liter mustangs and late 70's early 80's Camaros with. The car was so much fun and comfortable too.

The mid-late 70's "smog cars" have become THE HOT build out here in the Southwest. not for Off-Road use but as Daily Driver/weekend fun cars to go ro cruise-ins, cars and coffees and local car shows, Just about every car project since the Covid "outbreak" has been some sort of 70's car because everyone was looking for something to just tinker around with and the Smog cars are cheap, more often than not are in decent shape and still running or not far from it and there's a ton of parts out both in used parts and parts stores and the aftermarket is starting to come around to them.

In 1969 Plymouth came out with a marketing tool called the Rapid Transit System and they posted in dealerships, the ET's for Cuda's, Duster's , Road Runners and GTX's with various options. The 340 Duster optimally equipped was quicker than Hemi Road Runner, so don't make fun of the Aspen. With the right equipment, it will run with your Chargers !

You mentioned people are probably asking why,. I’d be asking why not? What does Thrash and beat on add up to? FUN! These are the perfect vehicles to do it with. They’re not muscle cars, limited editions or highly sought after. Although I think with some Craigers, a hemi scoop and like a duck tail spoiler and yeah need some sort of body hugging bumpers. Maybe something like a rambler scrambler paint job then maybe thrash on some Chevy and some fords!
